XLibre Xserver 25.0 was the first public release of a community-managed fork of the X.Org X server. Announced on June 21, 2025, it was explicitly presented as beta-quality software for testing—not as a finished stable release. Later XLibre releases have superseded the initial 25.0 build.
What is XLibre Xserver?
XLibre is a community-managed project developing an X11 display server forked from the X.Org server. The project’s website describes the project, while its official repository hosts the server source and release information.
The June 2025 announcement marked the fork’s first release available to the public. It should be read as a project milestone, not evidence that XLibre replaced the X.Org server or that all Linux distributions adopted it.
What did the initial 25.0 release introduce?
The upstream NEWS entry for 25.0.0.0 lists several additions and changes. They are release-note descriptions, not independent guarantees of speed, security, or compatibility.

- Xnamespace extension: a facility intended to separate X11 clients into namespaces.
- Xnest ported to xcb: the nested X server was ported to xcb, avoiding a dependency on old Xlib.
- Per-ABI driver directories: a layout that can allow distributions to install multiple driver ABIs.
- Other changes: assorted fixes and cleanups, along with fixes for several CVEs.
These items describe the initial release’s scope; they do not establish a complete compatibility matrix or quantify performance improvements.
Why was XLibre 25.0 called beta?
The archived initial release announcement characterized 25.0 as beta quality and invited people to test it and report flaws. “Official debut” therefore means the project’s initial release announcement and availability—not a final, stable designation.

The project identifies June 21, 2025, as the first release date in its anniversary discussion. That post also refers to later releases containing security fixes.
Is 25.0 still the latest version?
No. The project’s release page lists later maintenance builds in the 25.0 series and releases in the 25.1 and 25.2 series. The anniversary discussion specifically records 25.0.0.24 and 25.1.6 as releases containing security fixes. Release status can change, so consult the upstream release page for the latest version and notes before choosing a build.

How should you decide whether to use XLibre?
There is no universal recommendation based on the launch announcement alone. Before adopting a build, check the specific combination of distribution, platform, driver, and X11 applications you use. The official release notes establish project features and history, but do not provide a complete compatibility matrix or comparative benchmark.
- Confirm that your distribution and platform package the version you intend to run.
- Check compatibility with your graphics driver and the X11 applications you depend on.
- Review maintenance and security fixes for the exact release series, not just the initial 25.0.0.0 announcement.
- Consider whether a feature such as Xnamespace addresses a need in your setup.
How do you install XLibre?
Installation depends on distribution and platform. The project repository provides source and release information, but the available project materials do not establish one safe set of installation commands for every system. Check your distribution’s current packaging documentation and follow its instructions; do not assume that a generic build or package command applies to your machine.
