What the xinput1_3.dll error means
xinput1_3.dll is a legacy XInput runtime library used by some older games and applications. It was distributed as part of the June 2010 DirectX SDK and is installed separately from the main DirectX version built into Windows 10.
The error can appear when:
- The legacy XInput 1.3 runtime is not installed.
- The DirectX side-by-side components are damaged or incomplete.
- A game is missing files in its own installation directory.
- A third-party DLL download supplied the wrong, damaged, or unsafe file.
- The application has another missing dependency but reports xinput1_3.dll first.
Seeing DirectX 11 or DirectX 12 in dxdiag does not prove that the older XInput 1.3 library is present.
Fix 1: Install Microsoft’s DirectX End-User Runtime
Microsoft’s official DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer is the recommended solution. The installer is named dxwebsetup.exe and installs legacy components such as XInput 1.3, D3DX9–D3DX11, XAudio 2.7, XACT, and Managed DirectX 1.1.

It does not replace, downgrade, or alter the DirectX version built into Windows. The current Microsoft Download Center listing identifies this package as version 9.29.1974.1, published July 15, 2024.
- Open Microsoft’s Download DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer page.
- Select Download.
- Run dxwebsetup.exe.
- Accept the license terms.
- Allow the setup program to download and install the legacy components.
- Restart Windows if the installer or application requests it.
- Launch the game or application again.
Fix 2: Use the offline June 2010 DirectX package
If the web installer cannot download files or you need to install without an internet connection, use Microsoft’s DirectX End-User Runtimes (June 2010). This package is approximately 95.6 MB and contains the legacy DirectX components needed by many older games.
- Download and run directx_Jun2010_redist.exe from Microsoft.
- Choose a temporary folder when asked where to extract the files.
- Open the extracted folder.
- Run DXSETUP.exe.
- Complete the installation wizard.
- Restart Windows if necessary.
- Try the affected application again.
Running the self-extracting file is not the final installation step. It only extracts the package. DXSETUP.exe performs the actual DirectX component installation.
Fix 3: Run the game’s own prerequisite installer
Many older games include their own DirectX setup files. This can be preferable when the problem affects only one game because the game may also need other prerequisites or a particular installation configuration.

- Redist
- _CommonRedist
- DirectX
There is no universal path, so the folder names and installer can differ. If the launcher offers Repair, Verify, or Repair prerequisites, use that option. On Steam, for example:
- Open Library.
- Right-click the game and select Properties.
- Select Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files.
Other launchers have similarly named verification or repair options.

Fix 4: Repair Windows system files
If the official DirectX installer completes but the error remains, repair the Windows component store and protected system files.
- Type Command Prompt into the Windows taskbar search box.
- Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes when User Account Control appears.
- Run this command: DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
Wait for the message: The operation completed successfully. Then run sfc /scannow. Leave the Command Prompt window open until SFC reaches Verification 100% complete. Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC because DISM can provide the repair files that SFC needs.
If Windows Update cannot supply the required files, DISM can use a matching repair source: DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:\RepairSource\Windows /LimitAccess. Replace C:\RepairSource\Windows with a valid repair source matching the installed Windows version. Do not use an arbitrary Windows folder from another version.
Check DirectX with DxDiag—but do not use it as a DLL test
- Type dxdiag into the Windows taskbar search box.
- Open DirectX Diagnostic Tool.
- On the System tab, find DirectX Version under System Information.
This shows the main DirectX version installed in Windows. It does not list every optional legacy side-by-side component and therefore cannot confirm whether xinput1_3.dll is installed.
Why downloading the DLL separately is a bad fix
Avoid generic DLL download websites. A standalone file may be modified, malicious, damaged, or the wrong architecture. Copying it manually can also leave other DirectX dependencies missing.

Windows searches several locations for DLLs, including the application directory and system directories. An untrusted DLL placed in one of those locations can create a DLL preloading or hijacking risk.
Use Microsoft’s DirectX installer or a legitimate prerequisite installer supplied with the game instead.

Do not confuse System32 and SysWOW64
On 64-bit Windows:
- %windir%\System32 contains 64-bit system files.
- %windir%\SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system files.
This naming is counterintuitive, but it is how Windows handles 32-bit applications through WOW64. A 32-bit game and a 64-bit application do not necessarily use the same system-file path. The official installer handles the appropriate architecture and deployment location.
What to do when the installer does not solve the error
The web installer says that no components are needed
Restart Windows and test the application again. If it still fails, run the game’s bundled DirectX setup or use the offline June 2010 package. The offline package is also useful when the web installer cannot download its files during setup.

This often means xinput1_3.dll was only the first missing legacy dependency. The DirectX End-User Runtime also supplies other components commonly required by older software, including D3DX libraries, XAudio 2.7, XACT, and Managed DirectX 1.1.
Install the complete official prerequisite package rather than searching for each DLL individually.
The error affects only one game
The game may have an incomplete installation or a defective copy of the DLL in its own folder. Use the launcher’s verify or repair feature, then run any DirectX installer included with the game.
Windows normally searches the executable’s directory before system directories. Consequently, a bad file in the game folder can affect that game while Windows itself continues to work normally.

The error appeared after antivirus software quarantined a file
Check the security product’s detection history, but do not restore a DLL downloaded from an unknown website. Reinstall the official DirectX runtime or repair the game so that a trusted copy is deployed.

The application is very old
XInput 1.3 is a legacy interface. Newer XInput versions are not guaranteed to be binary-compatible replacements for an application that explicitly requests xinput1_3.dll. Installing the legacy runtime is the appropriate compatibility fix.

Recommended repair order
- Install Microsoft’s DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer.
- If that fails, download the June 2010 offline package and run the extracted DXSETUP.exe.
- Verify or repair the affected game or application.
- Run elevated: DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth.
- After DISM completes successfully, run sfc /scannow.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
- Do not use an unverified standalone DLL download.
Windows 10 general support ended on October 14, 2025, although extended-security and certain LTSC or IoT editions have different support arrangements. That support status does not change the repair steps above.
FAQ
Is xinput1_3.dll part of DirectX 12?
No. It is part of the legacy XInput 1.3 components distributed through Microsoft’s DirectX End-User Runtime. DirectX 12 being installed does not guarantee that this older DLL is present.
Can I download xinput1_3.dll by itself?
You should not. Use Microsoft’s DirectX End-User Runtime or the game publisher’s prerequisite installer. A standalone DLL can be unsafe, damaged, or the wrong architecture.
Where should xinput1_3.dll be copied?
Do not copy it manually into System32, SysWOW64, or the game directory. The official installer places the required files correctly for the application and Windows architecture.
Why does the error remain after installing DirectX?
The game may have an incomplete installation, a damaged local dependency, or another missing runtime. Verify or repair the game, run its bundled DirectX setup, and then use DISM followed by SFC if Windows files may be damaged.
Will running regsvr32 fix xinput1_3.dll?
No. XInput 1.3 is a runtime library, not a COM component that should be registered with regsvr32. Install the proper DirectX runtime instead.
