The idea was to make a computer easier to repair, modify and upgrade—and, Xi3 hoped, keep useful for longer. Its later Piston prototype brought the same compact-PC concept to gaming, but it was not established as an official Valve Steam Machine.
What was the Xi3 computer?
Xi3 was a very small x86 desktop computer built by Xi3 Corporation. Its first cited model, the X5A-5342, measured 4.27 × 3.65 × 3.65 inches—small enough to make the traditional desktop tower seem excessive. EDN’s October 8, 2012 report described a dual-core, 64-bit processor running at 1.8GHz, 2GB of RAM, and SSD storage options from 16GB to 1TB. It supported two displays and included six USB 2.0 ports and two eSATAp ports.
The small enclosure was only part of the point. Xi3’s unusual feature was its internal architecture: three boards slotted together to divide up core computer functions. Rather than replace an entire computer when one part became outdated or failed, the design was intended to let owners repair or upgrade parts of the system.
Why did Xi3 use three boards?
Xi3 presented the tri-board layout as a way to make a desktop less disposable. A slotted-together design could, in principle, make individual components easier to access or replace than parts inside a conventional compact computer. The company’s goal, as reported by EDN, was to reduce desktop obsolescence by making systems easier to repair, modify and upgrade.

Xi3 projected that an upgraded system might remain useful for six to 10 years, compared with three to five years for a traditional desktop. Those figures were the company’s projection, not an independently measured lifespan. The modular idea was distinctive; the evidence does not establish how many owners upgraded their machines or whether the projected service life was achieved in practice.
How the Xi3 models differed
The X5A-5342 and the later X3A and X7A were compact general-computing systems with different documented configurations. The Piston shifted the concept toward gaming. The specifications and prices below reflect the cited contemporary reporting; planned prices are not proof that every configuration was ultimately sold at that price.

Was the Xi3 Piston a Steam Machine?
Not on the evidence reported at the time. PCWorld said Valve had invested in Xi3 and described the Piston prototype as intended for PC gaming on an HDTV. Ars Technica later reported the Piston’s hardware and a $999 pre-order price. That supports describing Valve as an investor or exploratory partner, but it does not establish that the Piston was an official Valve Steam Machine or that Valve set its final specifications.
The distinction matters: a gaming PC associated with Valve is not automatically a Valve-branded Steam Machine. The Piston was a physical Xi3 computer with documented pre-orders and reported specifications; its relationship with Valve should be described no more strongly than the reporting supports.

Can you still buy a Xi3 Piston?
As of 2026, the available reporting does not establish that Xi3 Piston, X3A or X7A computers are still available new, nor does it establish that Xi3 or ISYS Technologies continued selling upgrade boards or parts after the Piston’s 2013 launch. Historical pre-orders do not confirm present-day stock or support. The clearest product description is “Xi3 Piston mini PC,” used in a historical context rather than as a promise of current availability.

Xi3’s ambition was not merely to shrink a desktop. As inventor and CEO Jason Sullivan put it to EDN on October 8, 2012: “The trend in technology is not to have a smaller computer, the trend is to have a more powerful computer in a smaller space.” Xi3 paired that compact-PC ambition with a less common promise: that modular internals might let a small desktop evolve rather than be replaced outright.

- Storage: 512GB SSD – Quick Boot Speeds and Responsive Storage
The machine’s place in PC history rests on that combination. The X5A-5342 made the footprint strikingly small; the tri-board arrangement made longevity and repairability part of the pitch; and the Piston tested whether the same approach could serve a living-room gaming PC. The long-life claim remained a company projection, but the underlying design made Xi3 a more unusual desktop than a small case alone would suggest.
