XFA PDFs remain a compatibility headache because some are not fixed pages with ordinary form fields: their XML-based templates can change layout and pagination as data changes. Adobe says modern browsers’ built-in PDF viewers can render static XFA PDFs but not dynamic ones. Flattening can make a form’s appearance static, but it removes interactivity and scripts. A Rust flattener is a plausible response to that gap; the exact project described by this title cannot be evaluated from the available project-specific evidence.

Why XFA forms are different

XFA, or XML Forms Architecture, is an XML-based form technology used in some PDFs. Unlike the familiar model of a fixed PDF page with interactive fields layered over it, an XFA document can carry a template and form data that determine how the form is laid out. Adobe’s XFA documentation distinguishes two behaviors:

  • Static XFA: the form’s layout remains fixed at runtime.
  • Dynamic XFA: layout and pagination can change as data changes, with client-side scripts supporting those changes. Adobe’s example is a purchase order that expands and paginates to fit varying data.

Historically, PDF’s form dictionary can point to an XFA XML resource, which may be stored as a stream or as packets. The PDF 1.6 reference describes packets including a template, which defines field properties and behaviors such as calculations and validation, and datasets, which represent form state. That reference is useful format background, not a complete account of every later XFA feature.

Why a form may open badly in a browser

Viewer compatibility depends on the XFA form’s behavior. Adobe says modern browsers’ built-in PDF viewers can render static XFA PDFs but cannot render dynamic XFA PDFs. That distinction matters: “XFA doesn’t work in browsers” is too broad, while a dynamic form that fails to appear correctly in a browser is a documented compatibility problem.

For a form that must be completed or processed as a form, a static-looking conversion may not be an adequate substitute. The right workflow depends on whether the recipient needs to fill fields, run form logic, or simply read and print the completed pages.

What flattening does—and what it costs

Adobe’s Assembler Service and DDX Reference defines flattening this way: “Flattening means that form fields retain their graphical appearance but are no longer interactive.” Associated scripts no longer function after flattening. Adobe also lists layers, buttons, and other interactive objects among the things that may be removed by its documented Acrobat workarounds.

  • Use a flattened copy when the goal is a stable visual record for reading, printing, archiving, or sharing with a viewer that cannot handle the original form.
  • Keep the original when anyone may need to enter data, change answers, run calculations or validation, or use scripts and interactive controls.
  • Check the rendered result for page breaks, fonts, barcodes, images, and content that may depend on dynamic layout. The available documentation does not establish that any particular converter preserves these elements in every file.

Flattening is therefore a change in document semantics, not a lossless compatibility switch: it trades a working form for a static visual representation.

What Adobe’s documented workflows can and cannot do

Adobe says Acrobat Pro 2020 and later does not directly edit XFA XML. Its support guidance lists saving as EPS or printing to Adobe PDF as workarounds. Adobe warns that these routes flatten the result, removing fields, layers, interactive objects, buttons, and JavaScript. They can help when a static copy is the desired outcome, but they are not a way to preserve the original form’s behavior while editing its XFA XML.

For enterprise document assembly, Adobe’s Assembler reference describes flattening XFA forms and notes that flattening dynamic XFA depends on the Output service. That is a different workflow from using a local library or printing through a desktop application, so the choice is partly about operational requirements as well as rendering.

What a pure-Rust flattener needs to establish

“Pure Rust” describes an implementation and dependency claim; it does not by itself establish compatibility or output quality. The title’s specific program is not accompanied here by project documentation, a dependency graph, or test results, so its capabilities should not be inferred from the language claim.

A useful evaluation asks concrete questions:

  • Static versus dynamic layout: Does it render only fixed-layout forms, or also handle forms whose layout and pagination respond to data?
  • Script handling: Does it execute XFA JavaScript, intentionally omit it, or reject forms that depend on it? Omitting script execution can leave a form with a static layout that differs from its intended dynamic result.
  • Visual fidelity: Are fonts, fields, images, barcodes, and page breaks correct in the resulting PDF? These require document-level checks; the existence of a rendering API is not proof of fidelity.
  • Output meaning: Is the goal an interactive form or a static visual record? Flattening necessarily removes interactivity.
  • Execution environment: Is the tool a local Rust library, a desktop workflow, or a service? Each has different deployment, dependency, and operational implications.

The pdf_xfa 1.0.0 documentation illustrates that Rust-specific XFA tooling can expose extraction, layout rendering, flattening, and validation APIs. It says that forms requiring JavaScript produce static-layout output by default, while full JavaScript execution requires the optional xfa-js-sandboxed feature. This establishes that such Rust tooling exists; it does not establish that the project in the title uses that crate, implements JavaScript, or meets any particular fidelity, security, or performance standard.

Choosing the right route

Need Reasonable route Trade-off
Read or print a form that a viewer cannot render Create a flattened copy with a suitable converter The copy is visual, not interactive; inspect page layout and content.
Continue filling or validating the original form Use a viewer or workflow that supports the form’s required XFA behavior Support for dynamic layout and scripts cannot be assumed from generic PDF support.
Process forms locally in software Evaluate an XFA library against representative documents and required behaviors Language and API availability do not guarantee support for dynamic scripts or faithful rendering.
Assemble dynamic XFA documents in an Adobe enterprise workflow Assess the Assembler and Output-service route described by Adobe The documented dynamic-form flattening workflow depends on the Output service.

Keep an untouched original alongside any flattened output. For important records, compare the rendered pages with a trusted rendering of the completed form and confirm that the recipient needs a viewable record rather than a usable form.

Why XFA still matters

XFA’s persistence is best understood as a compatibility issue, not as evidence that it is widespread. The sources cited here do not establish how many PDFs or organizations still rely on XFA. They do establish why one legacy form can remain stubborn: a dynamic document may depend on XML-driven layout and scripts that a browser viewer does not support, while flattening fixes the appearance by removing the very behaviors that made it interactive.
