The closest PC reference points for Xbox Series X are an AMD Ryzen 7 3700X for the CPU, a Radeon RX 6700 XT for the GPU, and a 1TB PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD for storage. None is an exact equivalent: the Xbox uses a custom AMD system-on-chip, unified GDDR6 memory, and a storage pipeline built around dedicated decompression and console software. Treat these parts as architecture-era comparisons, not a recipe for identical game performance or a current-value PC build.

At a glance

Component Xbox Series X specification Closest PC reference What the match means
CPU Custom Zen 2; 8 cores at 3.8GHz, or 3.6GHz with SMT AMD Ryzen 7 3700X Similar generation and core/thread configuration, not identical clock behavior or game performance
GPU Custom RDNA 2; 52 compute units; 12 TFLOPS at 1.825GHz AMD Radeon RX 6700 XT 12GB A rough desktop performance-class reference, not a one-for-one equivalent
Storage 1TB custom NVMe SSD; 2.4GB/s raw and 4.8GB/s compressed I/O 1TB PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD Similar capacity and broad storage category, but not the Xbox decompression and I/O system

What PC parts are equivalent to Xbox Series X?

There is no exact PC parts list that reproduces an Xbox Series X. The closest useful comparisons are the Ryzen 7 3700X, RX 6700 XT, and a 1TB PCIe 4.0 NVMe drive, but each comparison describes a component category or generation rather than a guaranteed match in performance.

Microsoft’s published Series X specifications describe a custom AMD SoC that combines the CPU and GPU, 16GB of unified GDDR6 memory, and a custom NVMe storage system with hardware decompression. A desktop PC divides those jobs among a socketed processor, a graphics card with its own VRAM, system memory, and an SSD. The consoles and PCs also run different software stacks, and games are tuned for their respective hardware.

That integration is why comparing isolated headline numbers can mislead. A CPU clock, GPU TFLOPS figure, or SSD sequential speed does not by itself tell you whether a PC will produce the same frame rate, image quality, or load time in a particular game. Resolution, graphics settings, upscaling, ray tracing, drivers, memory use, and the game’s optimization all affect the result.

What CPU is in Xbox Series X, and which PC processor is closest?

Xbox Series X uses a custom eight-core AMD Zen 2 CPU. The closest specification-era desktop comparison is the AMD Ryzen 7 3700X, an eight-core, 16-thread Zen 2 processor; it is a reference point, not a drop-in or performance-equivalent replacement.

Microsoft’s 2020 specification lists the console CPU at 3.8GHz with eight cores, or 3.6GHz when simultaneous multithreading (SMT) is enabled. SMT lets a physical core handle multiple threads. The retail Ryzen 7 3700X has eight cores and 16 threads, a 3.6GHz base clock, and boost clocks up to 4.4GHz, according to PC Gamer’s specification-era comparison.

Those numbers need context. The Xbox’s listed clock options reflect the console’s custom CPU configuration and how its resources can be used; the Ryzen’s base and boost clocks describe a retail desktop processor with different operating behavior. The figures are not directly interchangeable, and a higher listed boost clock does not prove that the processor will deliver better performance in every game. CPU workloads, sustained clocks, thread use, cooling, and software all matter.

The Ryzen 7 3700X is also not a console CPU in a PC socket. Xbox Series X uses a custom chip and console platform, while a desktop processor must fit a compatible motherboard and platform. If you are building a PC, check processor and motherboard compatibility independently; the Xbox comparison does not establish which current processor is the best purchase.

In short, “Ryzen 7 3700X” is a useful answer to “what Ryzen CPU matches Xbox Series X?” when match means similar architecture-era specifications. It is not a promise that a PC with that processor will behave like a Series X or that the two processors perform identically across games.

What GPU is equivalent to Xbox Series X?

The Radeon RX 6700 XT is a reasonable rough desktop reference for the Xbox Series X GPU class, but it is not an exact equivalent. Microsoft specifies a custom RDNA 2 console GPU with 52 compute units, a 1.825GHz clock, and 12 TFLOPS of theoretical throughput.

The RX 6700 XT is a desktop graphics card based on AMD’s RDNA 2 generation. MSI’s product specifications for an RX 6700 XT 12G model list 12GB of GDDR6 memory, a 192-bit memory bus, PCIe 4.0, and HDMI 2.1. Those card specifications help identify the PC component being compared; they do not establish identical performance to the Xbox GPU.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In particular, the Xbox’s 16GB of GDDR6 is shared between the CPU and GPU, while the RX 6700 XT’s 12GB is graphics-card memory used alongside a PC’s separate system RAM. A PC’s total memory cannot be compared to the console’s 16GB by simply adding RAM and VRAM together: memory allocation, bandwidth, operating-system needs, and how a game uses resources differ.

TFLOPS is also a theoretical compute-throughput figure, not a game benchmark. Even when two GPUs share an architecture family, their game results can diverge because of clock behavior, memory bandwidth and configuration, driver behavior, ray-tracing workload, resolution, upscaling, and game-specific optimization. The RX 6700 XT is therefore best described as a practical AMD desktop reference, not a guarantee of matching Series X frame rates or visual settings.

If you are comparing a specific PC game with its Xbox version, look at published results for that game, resolution, settings, and frame-rate target. A broad “equivalent GPU” label cannot account for whether the console version uses a different rendering mode, dynamic resolution, or platform-specific optimization.

What SSD does Xbox Series X use, and what is the PC equivalent?

Xbox Series X has a custom 1TB NVMe SSD. The closest practical PC storage category is a 1TB PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD, but that is an analogy based on capacity and interface class—not a proven match for Xbox loading behavior.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Microsoft’s 2020 specification gives the console’s storage I/O as 2.4GB/s raw and 4.8GB/s compressed, using a custom hardware decompression block. The compressed figure describes the system’s decompression-assisted data path, not a promise that a normal PC SSD will transfer every game at that rate. The console combines storage hardware, decompression, and platform software as part of its broader Xbox Velocity Architecture.

A retail PC NVMe drive can provide fast solid-state storage for games, but the drive alone does not reproduce that whole pipeline. Actual PC game loading depends on the SSD, the rest of the PC, the game’s design, and how data is read and processed. A drive’s advertised sequential throughput is not interchangeable with a console’s compressed I/O figure.

Xbox Series X|S expansion cards are a separate case. Microsoft describes them as designed to match internal storage performance on the console. They are console-specific expansion products, not ordinary M.2 SSDs to install in a desktop PC. By contrast, ordinary USB storage is a separate, slower storage path on Xbox; do not treat it as interchangeable with internal storage or the expansion card when considering performance-sensitive game storage.

Capacity also needs a model qualifier. Microsoft’s current product range includes 1TB Carbon Black and all-digital Series X variants as well as a 2TB Galaxy Black model. The original 1TB technical specification remains useful for the original configuration, but it should not be read as the capacity of every Series X model available now.

Why can’t a PC component match the console exactly?

Because the Series X is a custom platform, not a standard desktop assembled from retail parts. Its CPU and GPU are integrated into one SoC, its memory is unified, and its storage system is paired with dedicated decompression and console software. A PC can use components from the same broad AMD architecture generations, but the complete system is different.

Unified memory is one important distinction. Microsoft specifies 16GB of GDDR6 on a 320-bit bus, with 10GB operating at 560GB/s and 6GB at 336GB/s. Those are two memory regions with different bandwidth characteristics, not a single pool that can be casually equated with a desktop PC’s RAM-plus-VRAM total. PC memory and graphics memory have different roles and configurations.

System integration also affects how developers allocate resources and optimize games. As AMD corporate vice president and senior fellow for semi-custom products and technologies Sebastien Nussbaum put it, “the console ends up being a playground for technical innovation.” The point for a PC comparison is that the result comes from the complete custom design—not just from selecting retail parts with similar names or numbers.

Can I build a PC as powerful as Xbox Series X?

You can build a PC around components in a similar broad performance class, but the available data does not establish a complete PC parts list, current build budget, or game-by-game performance equivalence. The Ryzen 7 3700X and RX 6700 XT are older product generations, so they are best used as reference points for the Series X’s hardware era rather than automatic recommendations for a new build.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a more meaningful comparison, define what “as powerful” means for your use. Choose the games and target resolution, decide whether you prioritize a particular frame rate or image quality, and account for features such as ray tracing and upscaling. Then compare results from the same game and comparable settings instead of inferring performance from a console-to-PC component label.

If you are assembling a PC, treat the three analogues independently. A Ryzen 7 3700X comparison says something about CPU architecture and core/thread count, not motherboard compatibility or the value of a used processor. The RX 6700 XT comparison identifies a rough desktop GPU class, not the card’s current price or availability. A 1TB PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD is a reasonable storage category, but it will not recreate Xbox’s decompression block or console I/O behavior.

Check current condition, price, and availability before buying older-generation parts. A component that was a useful match when the console launched may no longer be the best choice for a current PC, and the evidence here does not rank newer alternatives or provide a complete parts recommendation.

How should I interpret the comparison numbers?

Use each number for the limited question it answers. Core count and architecture help describe the CPU generation; GPU compute units, clock, and TFLOPS describe aspects of the graphics hardware; memory capacity and bandwidth describe how resources are provisioned; and SSD throughput describes part of the storage path. None is a standalone score for whole-system equivalence.

  • CPU clocks: Xbox’s 3.8GHz without SMT and 3.6GHz with SMT are console configuration figures. The Ryzen 7 3700X’s 3.6GHz base and up-to-4.4GHz boost describe a retail desktop processor. Do not compare those clocks as if they were measured under identical workloads.
  • GPU TFLOPS: Xbox’s 12 TFLOPS is a theoretical throughput figure. It cannot guarantee a particular frame rate against a PC graphics card; use game-specific performance evidence for that.
  • Memory: Xbox’s 16GB unified GDDR6 and a PC’s separate system RAM and graphics-card VRAM have different layouts. Their capacities are not directly interchangeable.
  • SSD speed: Xbox’s raw and compressed I/O figures describe a custom system. A retail SSD’s advertised speed does not include the Xbox decompression block or automatically predict game loading times.

This distinction is particularly useful when reading component comparisons online. A part may be “equivalent” by architecture, approximate class, or a reported game result; those are different claims. Here, the CPU comparison is specification-era, the GPU comparison is a rough performance-class reference, and the SSD comparison is a category analogy.

Which PC parts should I take away from this comparison?

For a concise reference, use the Ryzen 7 3700X as the closest specification-era CPU, the RX 6700 XT as a rough desktop GPU-class comparison, and a 1TB PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD as the closest PC storage category. Keep the limitations attached to each name: none recreates the custom Xbox chip, unified memory, decompression hardware, or console-specific optimization.

These references answer what PC parts are broadly comparable to the Series X; they do not certify a PC build that will perform identically. For a purchase decision, compare current components and game-specific results rather than treating a console equivalent list as a shopping prescription.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Xbox Series X have the same CPU as a Ryzen 7 3700X?

No. The console CPU is a custom Zen 2 design integrated into Xbox hardware, while the 3700X is a retail desktop processor. They are comparable by generation and core/thread configuration, but they are not the same chip or interchangeable parts.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I put an Xbox Series X expansion card in a desktop PC?

The Series X|S expansion card is a console-specific product designed for Xbox storage expansion, not a standard PC M.2 drive. For a desktop, use a compatible PC SSD rather than assuming the console card will function as ordinary internal PC storage.

Does Xbox Series X support 2TB storage?

Yes. Microsoft’s current Series X range includes a 2TB Galaxy Black model in addition to 1TB variants. That model-specific capacity is distinct from the original 1TB technical specification.

Is the Xbox Series X GPU faster than an RX 6700 XT?

The available comparison supports calling the RX 6700 XT a rough desktop performance-class reference, not establishing a universal winner. The answer depends on the game, resolution, graphics settings, ray tracing, and optimization; TFLOPS alone cannot settle it.
