The Tool Desk

ITPro editor Ross Kelly called the advice “the most ludicrous piece of advice I’ve ever seen in my life.” That is Kelly’s opinion; the reported post is the underlying event.
What did the Xbox producer reportedly recommend?
Turnbull’s reported suggestions covered both practical job-search work and ways to manage the mental load of being laid off. The Economic Times said they included career planning, resume help, and networking prompts, alongside an aim of reducing the “emotional and cognitive load” associated with job loss.
ITPro quoted Turnbull as adding: “No AI tool is a replacement for your voice or lived experience. But in times when mental energy is scarce, these tools can help you get unstuck faster, calmer, and with more clarity.” The qualification matters: the reported post presented AI as an aid, not a replacement for a person’s own perspective.
Was this advice to use AI for counseling?
The reports describe AI suggestions spanning emotional support and career-related tasks, but they do not establish that Turnbull told workers to replace therapy or professional counseling with chatbots. The exact full text of the original LinkedIn post and its complete prompt list could not be independently confirmed from the contemporaneous reports. The Economic Times said the post was deleted.

Kelly’s ITPro article strongly objected to the timing and perceived insensitivity of offering AI advice to people facing job loss. Its headline’s “most ludicrous” characterization is Kelly’s judgment, rather than a separately verified fact about Turnbull’s intent or the post’s effect.
What was the layoff context?
The Economic Times reported in July 2025 that Microsoft had handed pink slips to 9,000 employees in the surrounding layoff context. That figure is the outlet’s report, not an independently verified count here, and it refers to the 2025 event rather than current Microsoft staffing or layoffs.

What does current guidance say about AI and mental-health support?
American Psychological Association
The American Psychological Association’s advisory concerns general-purpose generative AI chatbots and wellness apps, rather than every digital mental-health service. It says these tools “should not be used as a replacement for a qualified mental health care provider,” though they may be appropriate as a supportive adjunct to an ongoing therapeutic relationship. This guidance is current context, not part of the reported 2025 exchange.
World Health Organization
On 20 March 2026, the World Health Organization identified growing concern about using generative AI tools that were not designed or tested for mental-health support. It said responsible use requires clinical and research expertise, governance, and evidence. WHO’s discussion likewise postdates the 2025 LinkedIn post.

How to distinguish practical AI help from mental-health care
- Job-search organization: A general-purpose tool may help structure a resume draft, brainstorm networking messages, or break a career plan into steps. The worker still needs to check accuracy, protect personal information, and decide what reflects their own experience.
- Emotional or mental-health support: A chatbot is not a substitute for a qualified mental-health provider. Someone who needs care should seek an appropriate professional rather than rely on a general-purpose assistant as treatment.
- Human support: A trusted person can offer lived experience, context, and connection that a generated response cannot claim to provide. Career coaching and outplacement services may help with practical employment questions, but they are not the same as mental-health treatment.
