If you want one digital purchase to cover both an Xbox console and a Windows PC, buy the game through Xbox or Windows Store only when that specific title carries the Xbox Play Anywhere badge. Eligible digital purchases include the Xbox and Windows versions at no extra charge. Choose Steam when you want the game in your Steam PC library; Steam Remote Play can stream a PC-hosted game to supported devices, but it does not grant an Xbox console copy.
What is the difference between Xbox Play Anywhere and Steam?
Xbox Play Anywhere is a per-game entitlement: for participating titles, an eligible digital purchase through the Xbox Store or Windows Store works on supported Xbox consoles, Windows 10/11 PCs, and supported gaming handhelds. Steam is a storefront and PC gaming platform. Its Remote Play feature streams a game running on a Steam-equipped computer to another supported device; streaming is not the same as owning a native Xbox version.
Xbox’s [Play Anywhere FAQ] describes eligible digital games as playable across those supported devices “at no additional cost.” The program does not apply to disc purchases, and Xbox says only one supported device can be signed into the same game at a time.
If I buy a game on Xbox, do I get it on PC?
Only if the game participates in Play Anywhere and you buy an eligible digital version through the Xbox Store or Windows Store. Look for the Play Anywhere badge on the current listing before you pay. The feature is not a blanket benefit for every Xbox game, and buying a physical disc does not qualify.

For a participating game, Xbox says supported saves, add-ons, and achievements carry across the Xbox console, Windows PC, and supported handheld versions. Check the specific edition’s listing if you are comparing DLC or other included content; the program’s general policy does not make every edition identical.
Does buying a game on Steam let me play it on Xbox?
No native Xbox entitlement is established by a Steam purchase. Steam’s [platform overview] presents Steam as a games and PC gaming platform, while [Steam Remote Play] describes streaming from a computer running Steam to another supported device. That lets you play a streamed PC game on another screen when the setup and device are supported; it does not turn the purchase into an Xbox console license.

Do Xbox Play Anywhere saves carry over to PC—or to Steam?
For a Play Anywhere title, Xbox says supported saves sync between the Xbox and Windows versions, along with supported add-ons and achievements. That promise applies within the program, not automatically between Xbox and Steam copies of the same game.
Cross-save between separate store versions is title-specific. If you need a save to move between Xbox and Steam, verify the game’s own cross-save support and account-linking requirements before buying. The platform-level information cited here does not establish universal transfer between those storefronts.

How to choose where to buy
- Need a native Xbox console version as well as PC? Check the exact game’s Xbox or Windows Store listing for the Play Anywhere badge. If it is absent, do not assume a single purchase covers both devices.
- Playing on PC only and prefer Steam? A Steam purchase puts the game in your Steam library. If you plan to play on another screen, check whether your host PC and destination device support Steam Remote Play.
- Need cross-device saves or add-ons? Confirm that the specific title supports the transfer you need. Play Anywhere covers supported Xbox-to-Windows features; transfers to a different storefront are not guaranteed.
- Compare the actual listings. Check the current regional price, edition contents, DLC, device support, and system requirements for the version you intend to use. These details can vary by game and listing.
What the platform comparison does—and does not—tell you
Neither platform is universally cheaper or faster based on these feature descriptions. Prices, edition contents, performance, cross-play, and other title-specific features require checking the individual game’s current listing and documentation. Likewise, Steam Remote Play supports particular devices and setups; it is not a guarantee that every Steam title works on every remote-play device.
