Choose the console that keeps the games you care about playable. Before buying, list your must-play titles, note which ones you own on disc, and check the exact console edition and current subscription catalog you would use. Xbox Series X|S supports selected games from earlier Xbox generations; PlayStation says PS5 plays the overwhelming majority of PS4 games. Neither statement guarantees that every game, feature, or upgrade works the same way.
Start with the games you already own
Make a short list of the games you would be disappointed to lose access to, including their platform and format. Check each title on the relevant platform’s support information before choosing a console. Broad compatibility claims are useful starting points, not a substitute for checking a particular game.
- Xbox: Xbox Series X|S supports selected Xbox One, Xbox 360, and Original Xbox games. Xbox says compatible digital titles appear in the Ready to Install area. For a compatible disc game, the disc must remain in the drive after installation. Xbox backward compatibility support
- PlayStation: Sony says PS5 can play the overwhelming majority of more than 4,000 PS4 games. Some PS4 functionality may be unavailable, and some games may show errors or behave unexpectedly. Select games may benefit from Game Boost, and eligible games may offer a digital PS5 upgrade. PS5 backward compatibility support
PlayStation also says more than 4,000 games are ready to play on PS4 and PS5. That figure describes PlayStation’s own ecosystem; the Xbox source cited here does not offer a directly comparable total, so it cannot establish which platform has broader compatibility. Check whether your games are on disc or digital
The console edition matters if you own physical games. Xbox Series S is digital-only, so it cannot use game discs. PlayStation states that PS4 discs cannot be used with PS5 Digital Edition. If a title is on disc, make sure the console you are considering has a drive that can read it; if it is digital, confirm that the title is supported and accessible through your account.

PlayStation says digital PS4 games bought from PlayStation Store appear in the game library after signing in on PS4 or PS5. Its ecosystem information also describes using PlayStation Plus cloud storage to move save files between generations, but that does not establish that every game save or feature transfers identically. Compare subscriptions by the games and benefits you want
A subscription catalog is not a permanent inventory. Xbox says Game Pass titles, the number of games, features, and availability vary over time, by region, plan, and platform. Search the current catalog for your region and the device you intend to use, then verify that each desired title is included in the specific plan. Xbox Game Pass games catalog

Account access, sharing, and saves matter in a household
For a shared console, confirm which purchases and subscription benefits other household members can use, and what settings are required. PlayStation says selected Plus benefits can be shared on a primary PS4 and one PS5 when Console Sharing and Offline Play is enabled. On PS5, the setting can share purchases and some subscription benefits with other players using that console; this is not a blanket promise that every purchase or benefit is shareable. Use this checklist before you choose
- List your must-play games. Check title-by-title support on the console you are considering, including any desired upgrade or feature.
- Mark disc games. Confirm the specific console edition can read the discs you own; a digital-only model will not do so.
- Check what you want to play next. Search the current subscription catalog for your region, platform, and intended plan instead of relying on an old list.
- Review household access. If others will use your console, check the platform’s sharing settings and which benefits are eligible.
- Consider saves when upgrading. Confirm how the particular games you play handle saves and whether cloud storage or another transfer method applies.
