If an Xbox game from Microsoft Store does not appear where you expect in File Explorer, the first step is to confirm that Windows and the Microsoft Store recognize the game for your account. Microsoft’s support pages on this topic do not describe one universal game-file folder that applies to every title, so searching for a specific folder path is often the wrong starting point. Work through the checks below in order, and search for files only when you actually need to open them.
Three different problems look like “not visible”
The phrase “not visible” can describe three separate situations, and each one has a different fix. Identify which one you are in before you change anything.
| What you see | What it usually means | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| The game does not appear in Start or taskbar search | Windows is not listing it as an installed app for the current sign-in, or it has not been installed yet | Confirm its status in the Microsoft Store Library (see step 2 below) |
| The game is missing from the Microsoft Store Library | The Store does not show it under the account you are signed into, or access is blocked by region, family settings, compatibility, or a Store removal | Check the account and the availability reasons listed in Microsoft’s guidance on apps you can’t find or install |
| The app launches or appears in Windows, but you cannot find its game files in Explorer | Microsoft’s pages reviewed here do not establish a single file location for every Xbox or Store game, so an ordinary folder may not be obvious | Search the drive or This PC for a known file name, then stop if you do not need the files |
Step-by-step checks
- Search for the app in Windows. Type the game title in Start or the taskbar search box. Microsoft’s guidance on finding files and apps in Windows lists these two search points as ways to locate installed apps. If the game shows up here, Windows recognizes it, and you can launch it from the result. (Find your files and apps in Windows)
- Check the Store Library. Open Microsoft Store and go to Library (also labelled My Library in some versions). Make sure you are signed in to the Microsoft account that acquired the game. Microsoft says the Library separates items that still show a Download action from items already downloaded, so a Download icon means the game has not been installed on this PC. (Get trusted apps and games from Microsoft Store)
- Search File Explorer only if you need the files. Open File Explorer, select the drive where you think the game was installed or select This PC, and search for a known title or file name. Microsoft notes that searching This PC can take noticeably longer than searching a narrower location. A search that returns no obvious folder does not prove the game is absent, because the game may be installed without its files being presented as ordinary browsable folders.
- Check for blockers if the game is missing or will not install. Verify the account, then review the availability reasons in the section below.
- Use Store recovery if the app is present but misbehaving. Follow the update, repair, reset, and reinstall steps in the section on app recovery below.
- Avoid manual file changes. Do not move or edit the installed files by hand unless the publisher documents that procedure.
Why a Store game can be missing from the Library
If the game is not in the Library at all, the cause is usually on the account or Store side rather than in Explorer. Microsoft’s support guidance identifies these common reasons:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- The wrong Microsoft account is signed in on this PC, or the account that bought the game is not the one you are using.
- The game is not available in your region.
- Family settings restrict the purchase or installation, particularly on a child or managed account.
- The app has been removed from the Store.
- The device does not meet the game’s compatibility requirements.
- A restart is pending after Windows updates, which can delay the app from appearing correctly.
If you moved a game to a different PC and cannot find it, Microsoft advises checking the Store Library to see which titles are owned under the signed-in account. Microsoft’s support page on pushing apps and games to a device also includes compatibility notes that are worth reading before you assume a title is missing. Recovering an app that is present but not working
When the game is in the Library and shows as installed but does not launch correctly, Microsoft’s general guidance for Store app problems follows this order:
- Check for updates to the app in Microsoft Store before anything else.
- Use the repair or reset option if the app offers it. Not every app provides both, so use whichever option is available.
- If the problem remains, reinstall the app from the Store Library. This keeps the install tied to your Microsoft account.
Restart the PC after installing updates, because Microsoft lists a pending restart among the reasons an app may fail to appear or run. (Fix problems with apps from Microsoft Store)

What to avoid
Microsoft’s app permissions guidance describes file-system and install-folder access, but it does not instruct users to take ownership of a game directory, edit protected package folders, or move installed files manually. Those steps can break an install and are not a supported way to make a game easier to find. Keep your changes within the Store and Windows controls described above unless a specific game publisher documents a separate procedure. (App permissions)
