For Global Accessibility Awareness Day on May 21, 2026, Xbox announced a more secure attachment design and a new Goal Post shape for its Adaptive Thumbstick Toppers, plus accessibility features highlighted in Forza Horizon 6, Kiln, and Sea of Thieves. The topper file is free to download through Xbox Design Lab; making a physical topper requires access to a 3D printer or a printing service.
What changed with Xbox Adaptive Thumbstick Toppers?
Xbox says player feedback led it to improve the toppers’ attachment so they can better withstand higher force and stay in place during gameplay. Kaitlyn Jones, Gaming Accessibility Lead, Hardware and Platform at Xbox, described the change this way: “Based on player feedback, we’ve improved the attachment design so the toppers better endure higher force use and stay securely in place during gameplay.”
Xbox also added the requested Goal Post shape. The May 21, 2026 announcement describes seven available shapes in total. In Xbox Design Lab, users can choose a controller, select a topper shape, and customize its width and height before downloading a printable file. Xbox says a controller purchase is not required to download that file. Xbox’s GAAD 2026 announcement does not specify printer models, materials, or print settings.
How to get a free file or a physical topper
- Open Xbox Design Lab and choose a controller to configure.
- Select one of the seven topper shapes, including the new Goal Post shape, then adjust its width and height.
- Download the 3D-printable file at no charge. Xbox says you do not need to buy a controller just to download it.
- To use a physical topper, print the file with a 3D printer or have it produced by a 3D printing service.
The choice between printing at home and using a service comes down to access: home printing requires a printer, while a service avoids owning one. Xbox’s announcement gives no service prices or printer specifications, so it does not establish which route will cost less or what settings will produce the best result. It also does not provide a complete compatibility matrix; do not assume every topper shape fits every controller.

Accessibility updates highlighted in Xbox games
Forza Horizon 6
Xbox highlighted AutoDrive via ANNA (D-pad), Proximity Radar, and High Contrast Mode. It also described a post-launch update intended to add American Sign Language (ASL) and British Sign Language (BSL) for cinematics. The announcement framed sign-language support as a post-launch update; it did not confirm that the update has since shipped.
Kiln
Xbox listed flexible text settings, visual accessibility options, and remappable controls among Kiln’s accessibility features.

Sea of Thieves
Xbox pointed to control remapping and Audio Aim Assist as part of the game’s accessibility history, and highlighted Custom Text Overlay for Challenge Parchment, building on earlier work with Riddle Maps. Xbox said in its 2026 announcement that more than 50% of the game’s 100-plus updates included accessibility improvements. That figure is Xbox’s characterization of its update history, not an independently verified count.

The 2026 announcement brings together a hardware update and examples of in-game accessibility work rather than presenting a new controller purchase as the only route to access. Xbox has also discussed other products and broader accessibility context in earlier announcements: its 2024 coverage described the ByoWave Proteus Controller as a separate modular adaptive controller with more than 100 million possible configurations, while a 2025 GAAD announcement cited nearly 450 million players with some form of disability. These are historical figures and descriptions attributed to Xbox, not current product-availability or independently verified market claims. Xbox’s 2024 accessibility announcement and its 2025 GAAD announcement provide that earlier context.
