What happens when a game leaves Game Pass?
Game Pass catalog access is tied to the game remaining in the catalog and to your subscription entitlement. A departure notice names the affected titles and a date; it is a dated snapshot, not a permanent list. For example, Xbox Wire’s July 21, 2026 notice said eight games were leaving on July 31, 2026. That count applies only to that announcement, not to the catalog generally. Read the July 21 notice.

When a title departs, do not assume catalog access continues. The announcement’s date does not establish an exact time of day when access ends. Check the latest official departure notice for the title and platform you use.
Can I still play a game after it leaves Game Pass?
You can continue if you have another valid way to access that game, such as a separate purchase. Xbox Wire’s departure notices point subscribers who want to keep playing toward buying selected departing games. Confirm that the offered version is the one you play—such as console or PC—before purchasing. A purchase is a separate license from access through the subscription catalog.

Does downloading a Game Pass game mean I own it?
No. A download installs game files; it does not turn catalog access into a separately purchased license. If the game leaves the catalog, having it installed is not by itself a reason to expect continued play through Game Pass. The Xbox Store listing for Escape First, for example, distinguishes a qualifying Game Pass plan for cloud play from the requirement to purchase the game. That listing describes Escape First, not a universal rule for every game or play method.
Can I buy a game before it leaves, and will there be a discount?
Xbox Wire notices may direct subscribers to purchase selected titles before departure, and some notices mention member savings. Those offers are title-specific, not a guaranteed discount on every departing game, account or region. For example, a May 5, 2026 notice said subscribers could save up to 20% on selected games leaving May 15, 2026; that was a bounded offer, not a permanent Game Pass benefit. See the May 5 notice.

Before buying, check the game’s current Store listing and the departure notice for the platform you use. Verify the price, whether an offer applies to that specific title and account, and whether the purchase covers the version you want. A later Xbox Wire announcement also lists departure information by title; use the current notice rather than relying on an older list. See the September 15, 2026 notice.

The official notices cited here do not establish a universal rule for what happens to saves after a title leaves the catalog. They also do not say that a save is automatically erased or guaranteed to remain usable. Check the game’s own save and cross-progression information, especially if you plan to switch platforms or versions. Do not treat catalog departure and subscription cancellation as the same event; this guidance concerns a game leaving the catalog.

What to check before a game leaves
- Find the title in the current Xbox Wire departure notice. Note the stated date and the platforms listed for that game.
- Check the Xbox Store listing for your platform and region. Confirm the version, current purchase price and whether a member offer is shown for the title and your account.
- Decide whether catalog access is enough. If you want to keep playing after departure, look for a separate purchase or another valid license; an existing download alone is not ownership.
- Check save details separately. Look up the game’s save and cross-progression information rather than assuming progress will be lost or preserved.
- Use the departure date as a deadline, not a time-of-day guarantee. The cited notices do not specify an exact cutoff hour.
