Neither option is always cheaper. Game Pass can cost less when you play several games included in your plan during the months you subscribe. Buying games individually can cost less if you stick to a few titles, buy them on sale, or want to keep playing even if they leave the subscription library. The right answer depends on your actual plan price, the games you expect to play, and how long you need access.
How to compare Game Pass with buying games
Set a time period—such as the next six or twelve months—and compare the cost of the games you realistically expect to play during it. Do not use a plan’s total library count as a proxy for savings: the relevant question is whether your intended games are included on your platform and whether you will play them while your subscription is active.

- List the games you expect to play. Include only titles you would otherwise consider buying, not games you might try just because they are available.
- Check the current catalog and plan. Confirm that each title is included in your specific plan, region, and platform. Xbox says titles, features, and availability vary over time and by region, plan, and platform. Check Xbox’s plan comparison and availability terms.
- Calculate subscription charges for the months you need. Multiply your actual monthly price by the months you need active access. Account for recurring billing; Xbox says charges continue until canceled and may change with notice.
- Compare with current purchase prices. Use the same games and editions, and count a sale price only if it is available to you. Xbox offers discounts on selected games and add-ons, not every title.
- Consider only benefits you will use. For example, include the value of online console multiplayer, cloud gaming on supported devices, or member benefits only if you would otherwise pay for or use them.
- Factor in how long you want access. Game Pass provides access while a title is in the library and your subscription is active. Buying a game is the more relevant comparison if you want to keep playing regardless of catalog changes.
Subscription cost for your period = your actual monthly plan price × months you need access.
Individual-purchase cost = current prices for the games you intend to buy, adjusted only for discounts you can actually get.
Compare those totals, then consider meaningful differences such as included features and access duration separately. There is no universal number of games at which Game Pass becomes cheaper: a few expensive new releases can cost more than several discounted older games, and the result varies with plan, subscription months, prices, and catalog availability.

When Game Pass is more likely to be cheaper
- You expect to play several games that are currently included in your plan.
- You can play them within a relatively small number of paid months rather than keeping a subscription active all year.
- You value other included features, such as online console multiplayer or cloud gaming, and would otherwise pay for or use them.
- You are comfortable with library access that depends on an active subscription and changing catalog availability.
Selected games are available on day one, but that does not apply to every release. Xbox’s current plan page excludes Call of Duty from its selected day-one-games claim. In an April 21, 2026 announcement, Xbox said future Call of Duty titles would be added to Ultimate and PC Game Pass during the following holiday season, about a year after release; games already in the library would remain available. When buying games individually is more likely to be cheaper
- You mainly play a small, predictable set of games.
- You can wait for discounts and buy the games at prices you are willing to pay.
- You want access to a purchased game beyond the period it is available in the Game Pass library.
- You would not use the plan’s other benefits enough to count them in your comparison.

Make the decision using your own play habits
For a practical answer, use your intended games and the months you will actually need access—not a general claim that one option saves money. If Game Pass costs less for that list and period, and you are comfortable with subscription-based access, it may be the better fit. If buying the games costs less or you want to retain access beyond catalog availability, individual purchases may suit you better.
