The best way to spend less than you would on Xbox Game Pass depends on what you play and where you play it. Start with free-to-play games if they cover your needs, consider PlayStation Plus only if you own a PlayStation, or buy a small number of games when sale prices suit your play habits. No option is universally cheapest.
Compare the main alternatives
The PlayStation Plus prices below are the US prices shown on Sony’s pages on October 7, 2026. Prices and catalogs can vary by region and change over time.
| Option | Platform and cost | What you get | What to consider |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free-to-play games | Xbox; no subscription for online multiplayer in free-to-play games | Play eligible free-to-play titles online. Selected games can also be streamed with a free Microsoft account in supported regions. | Does not include paid Game Pass catalog games. Cloud streaming depends on supported devices and regions. Xbox free-to-play multiplayer; Xbox cloud gaming. |
| PlayStation Plus Essential | PlayStation; US displayed prices: $10.99 monthly, $27.99 for three months, or $79.99 for 12 months | Monthly games, console online multiplayer, exclusive discounts, cloud storage, and Share Play. | It is not a large on-demand game catalog. Sony’s PlayStation Plus plans and prices. |
| PlayStation Plus Extra | PlayStation; US displayed prices: $16.99 monthly, $43.99 for three months, or $134.99 for 12 months | Essential benefits plus the Game Catalog, which Sony describes as hundreds of games, and Ubisoft+ Classics. | Catalog games rotate and require an active membership; availability varies by plan and time. Sony’s PlayStation Plus plans and prices; Sony’s Game Catalog details. |
| Buy games individually | Buy for the platform you own; price depends on the game and current sale | Keep purchased games available without paying for a catalog subscription, subject to the store’s terms and access requirements. | Whether it costs less depends on actual prices and how many games you play; there is no universal break-even point established here. |
Choose by the games and platform you actually use
Use free-to-play if those games are enough
If you mainly play free-to-play titles on Xbox, you can play their online multiplayer without paying for Game Pass. Xbox also says selected free-to-play games can be streamed with a free Microsoft account in supported regions. That is a way to avoid a subscription, not a way to access paid games from the Game Pass catalog.
Consider Essential for PlayStation multiplayer and monthly games
Essential fits PlayStation owners who want console online multiplayer and the monthly games Sony offers. Its benefits differ from a broad rotating catalog, so it is not a direct substitute for access to Xbox Game Pass games. Sony’s listed prices provide monthly, three-month, and annual payment options; compare the term you would actually use rather than assuming an annual plan is better for everyone.

Consider Extra if you play a variety of PlayStation games
Extra adds Sony’s Game Catalog to Essential. Sony describes it as hundreds of games, with new titles added regularly, but individual titles can leave and the catalog depends on plan and date. Sony also says that from January 2026 PS4 games will be added only intermittently. Check whether the specific games you want are currently included before subscribing.
Buy a short list of games if you play them repeatedly
Buying selected games during sales can make sense if you return to a small set of titles rather than sampling a large library. Compare the current price of each game with the subscription cost for the time you expect to play; savings are not guaranteed. Essential includes PlayStation Store discounts, which may matter when comparing a PlayStation purchase with a subscription.

Know what happens when a catalog game leaves or a membership ends
A subscription catalog is temporary access, not the same as owning each included game. Sony says catalog access requires an active membership, and availability can change over time. If a game is central to your plans, confirm that it is in your regional catalog and check for a removal date before relying on the subscription. Individual purchases avoid catalog turnover, although the store’s purchase terms still apply.
Check cloud gaming requirements before treating it as a budget route
Xbox cloud gaming
Xbox lists Windows PCs, Apple and Android phones and tablets, Xbox consoles, select smart TVs, Fire TV, and select VR headsets among supported devices. Availability also depends on region and title. Xbox lists at least 10 Mbps download speed; some devices may need 20 Mbps for best quality. Most games require a compatible controller connected by Bluetooth or USB, while selected titles have touch controls. Streaming subscription games requires an active eligible subscription; selected free-to-play games can be streamed with a free Microsoft account. See Xbox’s cloud gaming information.

PlayStation Plus cloud streaming
Sony describes PlayStation Plus Premium cloud streaming on PS4, PS5, and PC, for eligible games in supported regions and territories. Sony lists at least 5 Mbps for cloud streaming and 15 Mbps for 1080p. Check both your region and the game’s eligibility before counting on streaming as an alternative. See Sony’s plan details.

On September 3, 2026, Xbox announced that monthly cloud gaming hours would begin in November 2026: 15 hours for Game Pass Ultimate, 10 for Premium, and 5 for Essential. Xbox said subscribers could buy more time, but the announcement did not yet give its price or availability details. Xbox also announced plans for pay-as-you-go access for people without Game Pass to stream eligible games they own. Because these changes were announced ahead of their scheduled start, check Xbox’s current terms and pricing before making a decision. Xbox estimated the change would affect 4% of Game Pass subscribers; that figure is Xbox’s estimate, not an independently verified measurement. Xbox Wire announcement, September 3, 2026.
