Choose the Xbox Wireless Controller if you want a capable everyday Xbox pad and do not need rear paddles or extensive hardware customization. Choose the Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 if you will use its four assignable paddles, adjustable-tension thumbsticks, hair-trigger locks, interchangeable parts, or saved profiles. The Elite costs more, and its extra controls are useful only if they fit the way you play.

Prices are Microsoft Xbox Design Lab US starting prices, not guaranteed live retailer totals; configurations and prices can vary. Xbox Wire published these starting prices in 2025, and Microsoft labels the product-page prices as starting ERP. Check the current price and configuration before buying (Xbox Wire; Xbox Wireless Controller; Elite Series 2).
Choose the standard Xbox Wireless Controller if you want the essentials
The standard Xbox Wireless Controller covers the features many players need: a hybrid D-pad, textured triggers, bumpers and back case, a Share button, Bluetooth, USB-C, and a 3.5 mm stereo headset jack. You can remap buttons with the Xbox Accessories app on supported Xbox and Windows systems.
Its AA battery design is a practical distinction. Microsoft lists up to 40 hours, but says battery life varies significantly with headset use, accessories, play habits and other factors. Choose it if you prefer replaceable batteries or do not expect to use the Elite’s paddles and hardware adjustments.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Choose the Elite Series 2 if you will use its extra controls
The Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 adds four assignable rear paddles, adjustable-tension thumbsticks, shorter hair-trigger locks, interchangeable thumbsticks, D-pads and paddles, and a wrap-around rubberized grip. Its onboard storage supports up to three custom profiles plus one default profile, making it suited to players who want different control setups for different games.
Those features make the Elite more configurable; they do not establish that it makes every player more accurate or competitive. If you will not use the paddles, trigger locks, stick adjustments or profiles, the standard controller is the more sensible purchase.

Do both controllers work with PC and mobile devices?
Both support more than Xbox consoles, but compatibility depends on the exact device, operating system, game, connection method and software. Microsoft lists the standard controller for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Windows 10/11, Android and iOS, with select-device and OS caveats. The Elite lists Xbox systems, Windows PCs and selected Bluetooth mobile devices.

The Xbox Accessories app is available on Xbox consoles and Windows 10/11. Check Microsoft’s product specifications for your particular setup before purchase (standard controller specifications; Elite Series 2 specifications).

Microsoft’s published US Design Lab starting prices are $79.99 for the standard Xbox Wireless Controller and $169.99 for the Elite Series 2. The gap is justified only if the Elite’s added controls and customization matter to you; the standard model already provides the core Xbox controller layout, Bluetooth, app-based button mapping on supported systems and a headset jack. Since these are starting prices rather than guaranteed current retailer prices, compare the configuration and total you can actually buy.
