Xbox’s disc-to-digital feature, announced August 26, 2026, can add digital access for some qualifying discs—but the access remains conditional on keeping the disc.
How the licenses differ
A digital Xbox One or Xbox Series game is governed by two licenses under Microsoft’s usage rules: a user license associated with the purchasing Microsoft account and a device license associated with that account’s designated Home Xbox. The account license lets the purchaser use the game while signed in, subject to Microsoft’s rules. The Home Xbox device license lets other people using that console play covered games without the purchaser remaining signed in.
A physical disc is the game medium required for disc-based access on compatible hardware. It can be handed to another person or sold. That makes the item transferable, but it does not mean every disc works in every Xbox: check the console’s disc-drive capability and the game’s compatibility.
Disc and digital games compared
| Question | Physical disc | Digital purchase |
|---|---|---|
| What enables play? | The disc and compatible disc-reading hardware. If you claim a disc-to-digital license, Microsoft still conditions that digital access on continued possession of the qualifying disc. | A Microsoft account user license and a device license for the purchaser’s designated Home Xbox, subject to Microsoft’s usage rules. |
| Can other people at home play? | They need access to the disc and compatible hardware. The disc can be shared by handing over the physical item. | Other accounts can use covered games on the purchaser’s Home Xbox through its device license. |
| Can you play on another Xbox? | Disc-based access requires the disc and a compatible disc-reading console. | The purchaser can sign in on another Xbox to use the account license. Other accounts’ roaming access on a non-Home console depends on the purchaser being signed in and connected to Xbox services. |
| Can you lend or resell it? | Yes. The disc can be transferred. If a disc-to-digital entitlement was claimed, surrendering the qualifying disc means you no longer meet Microsoft’s continued-possession condition for that access. | Microsoft’s general rules say digital licenses may not be transferred or resold except where expressly permitted. |
Sharing games between Xbox consoles and accounts
Using a Home Xbox
On the purchaser’s designated Home Xbox, the device license lets other accounts on that console access covered digital games without the purchaser staying signed in. Microsoft’s current rules allow a Home Xbox to be changed up to five times during a rolling one-year period. This is a limit on changes, not a promise that a change will take effect immediately in every circumstance.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Using a different Xbox
The purchaser can use the account license by signing in on another console, subject to Microsoft’s rules. For a different account to use the purchaser’s games on that non-Home console, the purchaser must remain signed in and connected to Xbox services. Microsoft’s developer documentation says those roaming licenses for other accounts become unusable when the purchaser signs out.
So, digital sharing is convenient for a household centered on one Home Xbox, but it is not equivalent to handing someone a disc they can use independently. Avoid assuming that two people can play the same game simultaneously; the rules described here do not establish that for every game or setup.

What Xbox’s disc-to-digital feature changes—and what it does not
In its August 26, 2026 announcement, Xbox said a player can insert a supported Xbox One or Xbox Series X game disc into a supported console and launch the game to claim a digital entitlement. Xbox described the initial selection as “thousands of titles,” with more to be added. That is a qualitative description, not an exact count, and eligibility is not universal.
- The physical disc continues to work as before.
- The claimed digital access remains conditioned on continued possession of the qualifying disc. Microsoft may require eligibility to be revalidated and may suspend or revoke access if you no longer have the disc.
- The digital entitlement cannot be transferred separately from the qualifying disc. Claiming it does not let you sell the disc and keep the digital access.
- Microsoft may add or remove eligible discs; technical, publishing, or licensing factors can limit availability. The official announcement and usage rules do not provide a verified, permanent list of eligible titles.
- Digital features such as Xbox Play Anywhere or Xbox Cloud Gaming apply only where the particular game supports them.
Check current Xbox guidance or the console’s claim flow for a specific title rather than assuming that a disc qualifies. Also confirm that your console has a disc drive and that the game’s other hardware requirements are met: a digital entitlement does not provide peripherals a game may require.

Which format fits your situation?
- Choose a disc when resale or lending matters. You can pass on the physical item, and its value may be attractive if the used price is lower. Prices vary by title, edition, retailer, region, and date, so compare current listings rather than relying on a general price assumption.
- Choose digital when account-based access and Home Xbox sharing suit your household. There is no disc to manage, and the Home-console device license supports access by other accounts on that console. The license is not generally a freely transferable copy.
- Check availability before choosing either format. Digital access depends on store availability and distribution rights; disc-to-digital eligibility depends on the specific title and can change.
