Retail Mode is for playing Xbox games and using retail services; Developer Mode switches the console to Dev Home for app development and testing. Microsoft says Store or Live services may be unavailable in Developer Mode. To play normally again, choose Leave developer mode in Dev Home; the console restarts into Retail Mode.

What changes between Developer Mode and Retail Mode?

The active mode determines which console environment you see and what you can do there. Microsoft’s Xbox UWP FAQ describes Developer Mode as an environment for developing and testing apps, while Retail Mode is the normal consumer environment.

What you want to know Retail Mode Developer Mode
Home screen Retail Home experience Dev Home
Main purpose Playing retail games and using retail services Developing, deploying, and testing apps
Store and Live access Retail environment Microsoft says Store or Live services may be unavailable
Visual clue Retail Home and Gold/Live content Dev Home
Deploying an app from Visual Studio Not available while the console is in Retail Mode Supported, with a signed-in user; Microsoft recommends a wired connection for best deployment performance

These mode descriptions reflect Microsoft’s documentation; they do not imply that every app or service behaves identically in every configuration. The FAQ’s Visual Studio connection answer specifically refers to Xbox One.

How to tell which mode your Xbox is in

  1. Press the controller’s Xbox button to open the Home interface.
  2. If the interface takes you to Dev Home, you are in Developer Mode. Microsoft’s FAQ puts it plainly: “If this takes you to Dev Home, you’re in Developer Mode.”
  3. If you see the retail Home experience and Gold/Live content, you are in Retail Mode.

How to return to Retail Mode

  1. From Dev Home, choose Leave developer mode.
  2. Allow the console to restart. Microsoft says the restart returns it to Retail Mode.
  3. After it starts, use the retail Home experience to access your games and retail services.

If you need to enter Developer Mode, Microsoft’s FAQ points to the Dev Mode Activation app and activation instructions. Microsoft’s detailed activation terms are specifically for Xbox One, so they should not be treated as a universal Series X|S activation guide.

Do games, apps, and saves remain when you leave the program?

Microsoft says installed games and apps are not lost when a user leaves the Developer Program. Saved games are retained in the Live account’s cloud profile if the player was online while playing. The cloud-save condition matters: the FAQ does not establish that an offline save will have been uploaded.

Microsoft’s Xbox One activation terms also warn that an activated console may receive updates unavailable to ordinary retail consoles; those updates could temporarily reduce or remove functionality. The terms page was last updated December 23, 2021, and its warning is Xbox One-specific.

Developer Mode is not the same as an Xbox services sandbox

Developer Mode changes the console environment between Dev Home and the retail experience. An Xbox services sandbox is a separate developer setting that isolates title-service configuration and selected test data. Changing one does not mean you have changed the other.

Microsoft’s GDK documentation says Xbox One or later consoles default to the RETAIL sandbox. In development sandboxes, achievements, leaderboards, stats, and service configuration are isolated; social information such as friends and followers is not sandboxed. Achievements earned in one sandbox do not carry over to another, and players in different sandboxes cannot play multiplayer together.

What developers should know before using Developer Mode

  • Visual Studio deployment requires Developer Mode. Microsoft says the user must also be signed in. Its FAQ states, in the Xbox One deployment context, “You cannot connect to your Xbox One when it is in Retail Mode.”
  • A wired connection is recommended, not required. Microsoft recommends wired networking for the best deployment performance; its guidance does not specify an Ethernet cable type.
  • Some development and publishing paths are no longer supported. Microsoft’s UWP FAQ says x86 app development and x86 Store submissions are no longer supported, and UWP-based games are no longer accepted in the Xbox Store. It directs game creators to ID@Xbox. That FAQ, last updated January 14, 2026, covers its UWP context and is not a complete description of every Xbox developer program or publishing route.

Which mode should you use?

  • Choose Retail Mode to play retail games and use the normal consumer environment.
  • Choose Developer Mode when you need Dev Home for app development, deployment, or testing.
  • If games or retail services seem unavailable, first check whether the console is in Developer Mode and return to Retail Mode if you want the retail experience.

For Microsoft’s mode, deployment, and retention guidance, see the Xbox UWP frequently asked questions. For the distinct services-sandbox concept, see the GDK sandbox overview. Xbox One-specific activation terms are published in Microsoft’s Xbox One Developer Mode activation agreement.
