You can play Xbox games without owning a console if you have a supported device, a supported game and region, and the required subscription—or a qualifying free-to-play title. Playing directly on an Xbox instead requires access to an Xbox console. The right setup depends on what devices and games you already have, and whether you prefer streaming or playing locally.
What you need for Xbox Cloud Gaming
Cloud Gaming streams a game to your device, so the game runs remotely rather than on an Xbox console in your home. Xbox lists Windows PCs, Apple and Android phones and tablets, Xbox consoles, select LG, Samsung and VIDAA OS smart TVs, Amazon Fire TV devices, and select Meta Quest headsets as supported device categories. Exact models and regional availability change; check Xbox’s current Cloud Gaming requirements before relying on a particular device.
- A supported device and region. A console is not required if you play on another supported device.
- An eligible subscription and game. Most cloud games require an active Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, Premium, or Essential subscription, plus a supported game in a supported region. Xbox says select free-to-play games can be played with a free Microsoft account in a supported region. Game and feature availability varies by region, plan, and platform.
- A compatible controller. Connect one by Bluetooth or USB. Select games have Xbox touch controls, so controller-free play is limited to supported titles.
- A suitable internet connection. Xbox lists 10 Mbps download speed as the minimum for cloud play, says some devices may need 20 Mbps for best quality, and recommends 5 GHz Wi-Fi. These are Xbox’s published recommendations, not a guarantee of smooth play; connection quality, location, device, and other factors matter. For browser play at xbox.com, use a supported browser.
Cloud streaming can also differ from playing locally: Xbox notes possible limits such as lower video resolution, cloud-only saves, limited audio outputs, or limited accessory support. Check the requirements and game details for the title and device you plan to use.
What you need to play cloud games on a TV
TV cloud gaming is a version of Cloud Gaming, not a separate console requirement. Xbox lists supported LG or Samsung smart TVs and Amazon Fire TV devices, a compatible controller, and a Game Pass subscription for most cloud games. Select free-to-play games and other supported games are exceptions to the general subscription requirement.

For TV play, Xbox recommends a wired connection or 5 GHz Wi-Fi with 20 Mbps download speed. Compatibility depends on the TV or Fire TV generation, market, and game, so consult the current Xbox on TVs compatibility and setup information before choosing a device.
What you need to play directly on an Xbox console
To play locally, you need access to an Xbox console such as an Xbox Series X|S or Xbox One. A compatible controller is used for play. Unlike Cloud Gaming on another supported device, this route does not stream the game from Xbox’s cloud to a phone, PC, or TV.

Xbox’s cited pages do not provide a complete, general first-time console setup checklist, and subscription needs depend on the game and service. Do not assume every console game requires Game Pass. If you already own or can use an Xbox, you do not need to buy another one simply to play on the console route.

Xbox’s speed figures are service guidance, not independent performance measurements. A connection that meets a listed speed does not by itself establish that a particular game will stream well.

Remote Play is not Cloud Gaming
Xbox Remote Play streams games installed on your own Xbox console to a compatible TV, VR headset, PC, phone, or tablet. The console remains the host, so Remote Play is not a way to play Xbox games without access to a console.
Xbox lists an Xbox Series X|S or Xbox One with remote features enabled, a compatible client device, a Microsoft account with an Xbox profile, and 5 GHz Wi-Fi or mobile data at 10 Mbps download speed as requirements. See Xbox Remote Play requirements for current details.

Which setup should you choose?
- Choose Cloud Gaming if you have a supported phone, tablet, PC, TV, or other device and want to play without buying or using a console. First confirm that your region, game, subscription, controller, and connection are supported.
- Choose console gaming if you have access to an Xbox and want to play directly on it rather than stream the game from the cloud.
- Choose Remote Play if you already have an Xbox and want to stream games installed on that console to another compatible device.
Supported regions, devices, games, browsers, controllers, plans, and features can change. Xbox’s live pages are the best place to verify current compatibility before setting up play.
