Xbox CEO Asha Sharma’s reported October 6, 2026 town-hall remarks describe a recovery strategy built around four priorities—core, content, creation and connection—and a future “family of devices” led by a console. The growth chart she discussed concerned Xbox-owned and published games, not the whole Xbox business: Microsoft separately reported Xbox revenue down 10% in fiscal 2026’s fourth quarter.
What Sharma said about Xbox’s recovery
Windows Central reported on October 6 that it had received a transcript of an internal Xbox staff town hall and verified it with trusted sources. Xbox has not published that transcript as an official public record, so the remarks below should be understood as reported statements rather than a company-issued transcript.
In the town hall, Sharma framed Xbox’s priorities as “core, content, creation and connection.” The four-part approach links the current console business to game development, the tools and conditions for making games, and the ways players and developers connect across Xbox platforms.
Core: rebuild the current console relationship
The plan includes renewed attention to the existing Xbox Series X|S generation. Sharma has also said Xbox cannot currently make as many consoles as players want to buy. In her June 10, 2026 reset memo, she pointed to higher hardware-component costs and the need for a new business model and hardware partnerships while reaffirming Xbox’s commitment to Helix. Xbox’s June reset memo is the company’s explanation of those operating challenges, not an independent assessment.

Content: strengthen franchises and add new ideas
Sharma’s reported remarks call for stronger first-party output, including investment in established franchises and new intellectual property. Her June memo said franchises had not received sufficient investment and described reliable first- and third-party exclusives, alongside new IP, as important to the business.
Creation and connection: make the platform easier to build for and use
The reported strategy also points to simplifying publishing for developers and offering more flexibility in services such as Game Pass. These efforts are meant to reduce friction across the Xbox platform rather than relying on new hardware alone to bring players back.

What “first-party growth” means—and what it doesn’t
Windows Central initially described Sharma’s chart as showing a return to growth, then clarified that it measured first-party growth: games Xbox owns and publishes. The distinction matters. A stronger result from those games does not establish that total Xbox revenue, player activity or the wider platform business has returned to growth.
Sharma reportedly said that, at the beginning of the year, Xbox was declining in hours spent, players and revenue, while hours spent had since stabilized. The outlet also attributed a 30% rise in positive brand sentiment over the prior year to her comments. No survey sample or methodology accompanies that figure in the cited material, so it is best treated as an Xbox claim reported by Windows Central, not an independently verified market statistic.

Microsoft’s financial results tell a separate story
Microsoft’s FY2026 Q4 earnings call reported year-over-year declines of 10% in Xbox revenue and 10% in Xbox content and services revenue. Those figures cover broader business measures than the first-party chart discussed at the town hall, and they refer to a specific fiscal quarter.
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said the company expected the Xbox business to return to growth in fiscal 2027 as it made changes across content, platform and operations. That is a forward-looking expectation, not evidence that growth has already resumed. Microsoft’s FY2026 Q4 earnings-call materials provide the company’s reported results and outlook.

Project Helix: what Xbox has announced
At the Game Developers Conference on March 11, 2026, Xbox announced Project Helix as a next-generation first-party console in development. The company says it is designed to play Xbox console and PC games. Xbox also said it is working with AMD on a custom system-on-chip and co-design for next-generation DirectX and FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR). These are stated plans and intended capabilities, not final product specifications.
Xbox says developer alpha versions of Helix hardware are planned to begin shipping in 2027. That means hardware is intended for developers to test; it is not a consumer release date. Xbox has not established a retail launch date, price, final specifications or a precise compatibility list in the cited announcements. The company has also said it is committed to keeping games from four Xbox generations playable for years to come, without publishing a definitive Helix compatibility list in that statement. Is Helix one console or a family of devices?
In the reported town hall, Sharma described Gen-10/Helix as a “family of devices,” while saying Xbox would have “a great console first.” She also said the company would make some hardware itself and partner on other areas, and that an operating system was in development. The remarks do not confirm a handheld, a specific number of devices, a retail configuration or a named consumer hardware partner.
The AMD relationship Xbox has officially announced is for technical co-development of Helix’s custom SoC and related graphics technologies. It does not, by itself, establish who might manufacture or sell any eventual consumer devices.
Why Xbox says the recovery will take more than a new console
Sharma’s June reset memo describes financial and operational pressures behind the strategy. She said Xbox had spent more than $20 billion over five years on ongoing content, platform and hardware-subsidy investments, excluding Activision Blizzard King, while annual revenue had declined by nearly half a billion dollars over that period. She also projected that storage-component prices for the 2027 holiday season could be more than five times their level two years earlier; that is a forward-looking company projection, not a current retail-price comparison.
Together with the reported shortfall in console supply, underinvestment in franchises and platform complexity, these points explain why the recovery plan spans current hardware, first-party games, developer experience and future devices. They are Xbox’s own account of the problem and its response, not independently verified causes of the company’s performance.

For now, Helix is a development project with company-stated goals, not a product shoppers can compare by price or final specifications. The recovery claim also needs to be read by measure: first-party growth, total Xbox revenue and content-and-services revenue are distinct indicators, and the reported town-hall chart does not override Microsoft’s quarterly results.
