The Xbox app and Battle.net serve different roles on a Windows PC. Xbox is a broader hub for Xbox and Game Pass discovery, social and cross-device features, and a combined view of installed games. Battle.net remains Blizzard’s documented app for installing Blizzard games and troubleshooting their downloads or updates. Xbox can show supported installed Battle.net games, but that does not mean it takes over their installation or patching.

What Xbox’s aggregated library does—and does not do
In its September 15, 2025 announcement, Xbox said supported installed games from Battle.net and other PC storefronts would appear in the Xbox app’s My Library and Most Recent sections. You can control which supported storefronts appear at Settings > Library & Extensions. This gives you a consolidated place to find and launch supported games that are already installed.
Seeing a Battle.net game in Xbox is not evidence that Xbox manages the game’s installation, Blizzard account, or patches. Blizzard’s support instructions still direct players to Battle.net for the World of Warcraft install workflow and download or update troubleshooting. Use Battle.net when you need to install a Blizzard title or resolve an issue with its Blizzard-managed installation.
Where to install and update a Blizzard game
- Open the Battle.net desktop app and select the Blizzard game.
- Choose the game version if prompted, then select Install. Blizzard’s documented example is for World of Warcraft; individual games may have different options.
- If Battle.net shows Install even though the game is already on your PC, use Blizzard’s instructions to locate the existing game folder. See Blizzard’s guidance for a missing game in Battle.net.
- If a download or update fails, follow Blizzard’s technical troubleshooting guidance through its support instructions rather than assuming the Xbox library view can repair the Battle.net installation. World of Warcraft installation and troubleshooting
Blizzard’s cited guidance establishes Battle.net’s role for these tasks, but it does not establish that every Battle.net game has identical automatic-update settings. The official sources also do not establish which launcher downloads or updates games faster, so there is no documented performance winner to report.

Game Pass and Xbox app requirements
PC Game Pass is a changing subscription catalog, not a permanent ownership list. Access to catalog games ends if the subscription expires or a title leaves the catalog. Game availability varies by time, region, plan, and platform; check the PC Game Pass catalog and terms for current details.
Xbox lists Windows 10/11 version 22H2 or higher as the app requirement, along with 150 MB of storage and a 720p display. Individual games can have different requirements. Xbox also describes a controller-optimized mode for Windows 11 PCs and handhelds; a controller is relevant to that experience but is not stated as a requirement for using either launcher. Which app should you use?
- Choose Xbox to browse Xbox and Game Pass games, use its listed social and cross-device features, or see supported installed games from several PC storefronts together.
- Choose Battle.net to install Blizzard games and follow Blizzard’s app-specific troubleshooting for their downloads or updates.
- Use both if you want Xbox as a broader discovery and library view while keeping Battle.net for Blizzard game installation and support.
