Upscaling lets an Xbox Ally render a game at a lower resolution and reconstruct the image for a higher-resolution display. That can make it easier to raise frame rate or keep other graphics settings, but the result depends on the game and the scaling method. On these handhelds, the main choices are an upscaler built into the game, AMD Radeon Super Resolution (RSR) in the graphics driver, and—on the ROG Xbox Ally X in Microsoft’s documented docked-display setup—Windows Automatic Super Resolution (Auto SR).
Start with the game’s own upscaler if it has one and looks good. Use RSR as a driver-level fallback when the game lacks a suitable option. Consider Auto SR only if your Ally X, game, display, and Windows setup meet Microsoft’s requirements. If performance is already where you want it, native rendering avoids the extra reconstruction step.
What does upscaling do on an Xbox Ally?
Upscaling is a two-stage process: the game renders fewer pixels than the display will show, then software reconstructs that smaller image into a larger output. For example, ASUS describes setting a game to 720p and using RSR to upscale it to a 1080p display. The benefit is that the game has fewer pixels to render; the trade-off is that the final image is reconstructed rather than rendered natively at the display resolution.
That trade can be useful when a game feels too slow at a higher resolution, or when you want to preserve other graphics settings while seeking more performance headroom. It is not a guaranteed frame-rate increase or a free image-quality improvement. The outcome depends on the game, its input resolution, the display, and the scaler’s implementation. The official materials cited here do not provide a controlled, same-game performance comparison of FSR, RSR, and Auto SR on Xbox Ally hardware, so there is no reliable universal percentage uplift or image-quality ranking to quote.

“Xbox Ally upscaling” is not one universal Xbox switch. The three options operate at different layers and have different compatibility rules:
| Method | Where it runs | When it makes sense | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Game-integrated FSR or another in-game scaler | Inside the game’s graphics pipeline | First option to try when the game offers it and the result is satisfactory | Availability and controls vary by game |
| Radeon Super Resolution (RSR) | AMD graphics driver | Fallback for a game without a suitable integrated upscaler | The game must render below the display’s native resolution |
| Automatic Super Resolution (Auto SR) | Windows operating system | On the ROG Xbox Ally X in Microsoft’s supported docked external-display scenario | Requires a compatible setup and game; does not support HDR content |
Should I use a game’s FSR option first?
Usually, yes: if a game has a well-integrated FSR or other upscaling option, try that before turning on a driver-level scaler. AMD recommends using a game’s built-in FSR when available because game-specific optimizations may produce better results than RSR.
An in-game scaler is part of that title’s rendering pipeline. The game can expose its own quality modes and integrate scaling with its rendering choices. The exact names, available modes, and visual results are game-specific; the presence of an FSR option does not guarantee that every mode will look equally good in every title.

Check the result in the scenes you care about, including movement and fine detail, and keep the setting if the balance suits you. If the image is distracting or performance is already sufficient at native resolution, return to native rendering or another mode. This is a practical choice for the game—not a claim that FSR always wins.
What is RSR, and when should I use it?
RSR is AMD’s driver-level upscaler. ASUS describes it as an in-driver feature using the same algorithm found in AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution technology. Because it works at the driver level rather than requiring the game to integrate it, ASUS says it can be used with more games, including titles without their own FSR support.

The essential requirement is a resolution gap: the game needs to render below the display’s native resolution. AMD says RSR remains inactive until the game resolution falls below the monitor’s native resolution. If the game is already set to the display’s native resolution, RSR will not provide the intended upscaling path. In ASUS’s example, a game set to 720p can be upscaled to 1080p; a game already set to 1080p on that display is not affected in the same way.
Display mode can affect how you set it up. AMD’s guidance says that a full-screen exclusive game requires lowering the in-game resolution. With borderless full-screen, desktop resolution may be lowered depending on the RSR settings. If RSR appears inactive, first confirm that the game is rendering below the display’s native resolution, then check the game’s display mode and resolution settings.
RSR is a sensible fallback when a game does not offer an integrated scaler you want to use. It is not automatically preferable to a game’s own upscaler, nor does the driver-level approach guarantee a particular image or performance result. Judge it title by title.
What is Auto SR on the ROG Xbox Ally X?
Auto SR is Windows’ operating-system-level AI upscaler. Microsoft describes the broader feature as a way to deliver sharper visuals and smoother frame rates in supported DirectX games running at lower resolutions, without requiring developer work. It is distinct from in-game FSR and driver-level RSR: it operates at the Windows level rather than being selected as a game’s own rendering option.
The support boundary matters. Microsoft’s current Automatic Super Resolution documentation lists the ROG Xbox Ally X as supported when it is docked to an external display. It does not establish the same support for every Xbox Ally model or for ordinary play on the Ally X’s built-in screen. The documented requirements also include Xbox Insider enrollment, Windows 11 version 24H2 or later, and current graphics and neural-processor drivers. Microsoft identifies 1280×720 as the ideal input resolution for the Ally X.

Auto SR is therefore not a universal handheld toggle. Before troubleshooting it, confirm that you have the Ally X (not just another Xbox Ally model), that it is docked to the external display, and that the Windows, driver, and Insider requirements are met. A compatible game and supported resolution are also necessary.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsMicrosoft’s April 30, 2026 Xbox Ally update described the Ally X Auto SR feature as a preview and said it was intended to bring “1440p-like detail” alongside smooth frame rates on larger screens. That is Microsoft’s product description, not a published controlled benchmark or a promise that every game will look or perform that way. The actual result can vary with the game, settings, and system.
How do I enable Auto SR on Xbox Ally X?
Before starting, use a docked ROG Xbox Ally X connected to an external display, enroll in Xbox Insider, and update Windows 11 to version 24H2 or later. Microsoft also calls for current Game Bar, graphics, neural-processor, and Auto SR components. The ideal input resolution Microsoft lists for the Ally X is 1280×720.
- Update the system components. Install available updates for Windows 11, Xbox Game Bar, the graphics driver, the neural-processor driver, and the Auto SR package. Restart if an update asks you to.
- Connect the supported display setup. Dock the ROG Xbox Ally X to an external monitor or TV. Microsoft’s current support documentation makes docking to an external display part of the Ally X requirements.
- Launch a compatible game. Auto SR supports games running DirectX 10 or later, provided they use a supported architecture. The exclusions are important: check the next section if the feature does not appear.
- Open the Display widget. Press Win+G to open Xbox Game Bar, then open its Display widget and select the Auto SR tab.
- Enable it for the game. Turn on
Always use with this game
. You can also enable the status indicator so you can see whether Auto SR is active. - Choose a supported resolution and display mode. Use a lower input resolution; Microsoft lists 1280×720 as ideal for the Ally X. A game rendered at the display’s native resolution does not provide the lower-resolution input that upscaling is meant to reconstruct.
- Restart if prompted and check the indicator. Microsoft says to restart the game if requested. Confirm the Auto SR status indicator rather than assuming the feature is active just because it has been enabled.
Microsoft also documents a Windows settings route: Settings > System > Display > Graphics. The Game Bar route is useful for enabling the feature for a particular game; the Settings route provides another place to configure it. If the toggle is missing or Auto SR does not activate, revisit the hardware, dock, Insider, Windows-version, driver, game-API, architecture, and resolution requirements rather than assuming every title is supported.
Which games and content does Auto SR exclude?
Auto SR’s compatibility is narrower than “any PC game.” Microsoft lists support for DirectX 10 or later and native x64, x64 emulation, or Arm64 games. The current documentation excludes DirectX 9, Vulkan, OpenGL, certain 10-bit formats, and x86-only games.

Auto SR also does not currently support HDR content. If HDR is important for a particular display session, Auto SR is not the right path for that content. Microsoft also warns that some fine text or user-interface elements may not look perfect. Scaling reconstructs an image; small lettering and interface details can make artifacts more noticeable than larger scene elements. If text, UI, or motion artifacts are distracting, turn Auto SR off for that game and compare another supported path or native rendering.
These restrictions are separate from performance. A game can be excluded because of its API or architecture even if it runs well on the hardware; meeting the technical requirements also does not guarantee a preferred visual result. Compatibility and image quality need to be considered independently.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can I run FSR, RSR, and Auto SR together?
Do not stack multiple upscalers by default. Microsoft says Auto SR functions independently of a game’s own scaling technologies, but that does not mean that combining them is a recommended or predictable setup. Microsoft notes that results vary by game, settings, and system.
Choose one scaling path at a time and evaluate that result. If the game has an integrated upscaler, start there. If it does not, try RSR by setting the game below the display’s native resolution. On the Ally X, test Auto SR only within its documented docked external-display requirements. Keep the option that gives you the best practical balance for that title, and disable competing scaling options rather than layering them without a reason.

For a useful comparison, keep the game, display mode, scene, and other settings consistent while changing only the scaling path. Look at both image clarity and how smoothly the game runs; do not infer a universal winner from one scene or one title. No official same-game comparison in the cited material establishes that one method always delivers the most frames, least latency, or best battery life.

Which upscaling option should I choose?
Use the option that fits the game and the way you play. The order below is a practical starting point, not a claim that one scaler always produces the best image.
| Situation | What to try | Why |
|---|---|---|
| The game offers FSR or another integrated scaler | Try the in-game option first | Game-specific integration may provide better results than driver-level RSR |
| The game has no suitable integrated upscaler | Try RSR, with the game below native display resolution | It works at the driver level and can cover more games |
| You have an Ally X docked to an external display and meet Microsoft’s requirements | Consider Auto SR for a compatible game | It provides an OS-level path, subject to game and system exclusions |
| The game already meets your performance target | Keep native resolution if clarity is the priority | There may be no need to trade native rendering for an upscaled image |
In short: integrated upscaling first when it works well, RSR as the broader driver-level fallback, and Auto SR for the specifically supported docked Ally X scenario. Native resolution remains a good choice when the game already runs as desired or when the reconstructed image is less clear than you want.
Frequently Asked Questions
Was Auto SR on the ROG Xbox Ally X described as a preview?
Yes. Microsoft’s April 30, 2026 Xbox Ally announcement described Auto SR on the Ally X as a preview. That wording describes the feature at the time of that announcement; check Microsoft’s current support documentation for present requirements and availability.
Does Auto SR require developers to add support to each game?
Microsoft describes Auto SR as an operating-system feature that can work without developer-specific upscaler integration. A game still has to meet the supported API, architecture, and other compatibility requirements.
Can Auto SR make small text look blurry or imperfect?
It can. Microsoft warns that fine text and some UI elements may not look perfect, so inspect menus and interface details as well as the main game image when deciding whether to keep it enabled.
