The “Xbox 720” was a pre-reveal nickname, not the console’s official name. Microsoft unveiled Xbox One on May 21, 2013, showing its design and describing its features. The company announced launch timing and prices later, on June 10.

What the “Xbox 720” headline meant

The headline referred to Microsoft’s upcoming console reveal, scheduled for May 21, 2013, at the company’s Redmond headquarters. A reproduced article attributed to ExtremeTech predicted that Microsoft would unveil its next-generation system the following week and speculated about what the event would disclose. It was not a Microsoft announcement. The available copy is a secondary mirror, and the original article could not be retrieved; its predictions should therefore be distinguished from Microsoft’s official statements. What Microsoft revealed on May 21

Microsoft announced that the console would be called Xbox One. The company presented it as an all-in-one games and entertainment device and showed its design and features. Its announcement described a horizontal black console with a Blu-ray player, an eight-core x86 processor, a redesigned controller and a redesigned Kinect. These were details from the 2013 reveal, not current buying guidance. Microsoft’s May 21 announcement.

The reveal said Xbox One would launch around the world later in 2013. Microsoft said more details would follow at E3 in June, so the May event did not provide the full launch information.
