You can still redownload Xbox 360 games and DLC you already bought, but you can no longer make new game or DLC purchases through the Xbox 360 console store or the old Xbox 360 Marketplace. That storefront change took effect on July 29, 2024. Some Xbox 360 games that work on newer Xbox consoles may still be sold through newer Xbox storefronts, but that does not mean a particular delisted game is available. Your options depend on whether you already own it, whether it is backward compatible, and whether you have a disc-capable console.
What changed when the Xbox 360 store closed?
On July 29, 2024, the Xbox 360 Store on the console and the old Xbox 360 Marketplace stopped supporting new purchases of games and downloadable content (DLC). The change closed those purchasing channels; it did not erase the purchase rights for games and DLC people had already bought. Xbox’s August 17, 2023 closure FAQ says owners can continue playing previously purchased Xbox 360 content and can redownload a purchased game after deleting it.
That distinction matters because “delisted” can describe two different situations. A title may be unavailable for new digital purchase because it was removed individually, or it may simply no longer be purchasable through the retired Xbox 360 storefront. Neither case by itself proves that an existing buyer has lost access. Conversely, a game being part of Xbox’s backward-compatible catalog does not prove that a new digital copy is currently for sale.

Can you buy a delisted Xbox 360 game now?
Not through the old Xbox 360 store. For a new digital purchase, check the exact game’s current listing in a newer Xbox storefront, and confirm that the listing actually offers a purchase option in your region. The existence of a page, an old sale article, or a backward-compatibility listing is not enough to establish that a game is currently available to buy.
Check the individual title, not just the catalog
Backward compatibility answers whether a supported Xbox 360 game can run on a newer console; it does not answer whether that game is currently for sale. The catalog and the active store listings are separate things. A game may be playable by people who own it but unavailable to new digital buyers, while another supported title may still have a current listing.
Use the present-day Xbox store page for the exact title and region you intend to use. Look for a live purchase option rather than relying on a search result or archived sale page. Xbox published a sale article on May 14, 2024, but those discounts expired with the old store’s closure; they should not be treated as current offers.
Check region and edition
Availability can differ by region, and a title page may refer to a particular edition or add-on rather than the game you mean. Before paying, match the exact game and edition, confirm that the listing is available in your region, and check whether the item is the base game, DLC, or a bundle. Do not assume an old listing guarantees a current transaction.

Can you redownload a game you already bought?
Yes. Xbox says people can continue to play previously purchased Xbox 360 games and DLC and can redownload a purchased game after deleting it. This applies to prior purchases; it is not a free entitlement for someone who never bought the title.
If you are returning to an Xbox 360, use the account associated with the original purchase and look for the game in your own purchase or download history. The available Xbox announcement confirms the redownload right, but it does not establish exact current menu names or button-by-button instructions for every Xbox 360 interface. If a title is missing, first check that you are signed in to the purchasing account and that you are looking at the correct account’s history rather than a general store listing.
Deleting a local copy and losing a purchase are not the same event. The closure stopped new sales through the old storefront, but Xbox’s stated continued-access policy covers redownloading previously purchased games. Do not infer from the absence of a purchase button that a prior buyer must repurchase the game.

Can you play an owned digital game on Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S?
Only if that specific Xbox 360 game is in Xbox’s backward-compatibility catalog. For supported titles, Xbox says an owned digital copy appears in Ready to Install on Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S. That does not make every Xbox 360 game compatible with newer hardware, nor does it grant ownership of a game you did not buy.

Check the title against Xbox’s backward-compatibility catalog before planning to move your play to a newer console. If the title is supported and tied to your account, look for it in Ready to Install on the newer console. If it is not on the catalog, the newer-console route is not established by Xbox’s compatibility information; having an Xbox 360 digital purchase does not, on its own, mean the game will run on Xbox One or Series X|S.
Also separate compatibility from availability. A title can be supported on newer hardware without being offered for a new purchase, and a currently listed item still needs to be compatible with the console on which you intend to play it. Check both questions independently: “Can this console run it?” and “Can I buy it now?”
Can a physical Xbox 360 disc still work?
A disc is another way to play a game you own, subject to the console’s compatibility. Xbox says Xbox 360 games already owned on disc remain playable. On Xbox One or Xbox Series X, a supported disc can trigger a download when inserted, and the disc must remain in the drive while you play. The disc is needed to authorize play; the installation download does not turn it into a transferable digital license.

A disc that is scratched, damaged, or for a different title or edition may not solve the problem you are trying to fix.

Xbox Series S has no disc drive, so it cannot use a physical Xbox 360 game disc. If you have a Series S, a second-hand disc is not a route to playing the game on that console; you need a compatible digital entitlement and a title supported on the newer console. A disc purchase also does not attach a digital license to your Xbox account for use without the disc.
Which route should you use?
Start with what you own and where you want to play. This avoids confusing an old purchase, a current sale listing, backward compatibility, and a disc-based copy.

What happens to multiplayer and saves?
A game launching successfully does not mean its online features still work. Multiplayer depends on whether the publisher continues to support that game’s servers. Treat server status as a game-specific question, separate from whether you own the game, can download it, or can run it on a particular Xbox.
Xbox says cloud saves can transfer for available games played on backward-compatible newer consoles. That is not a promise that every game’s online features remain available, nor does it establish cloud-save support for every title or every play setup. If an old multiplayer mode or a specific save matters to you, look for information about that game’s own service and supported features rather than assuming the store closure answers it.

Does the Xbox 360 closure affect Movies & TV or other apps?
Xbox says the Movies & TV app stopped working on Xbox 360 after the store closure. That is a separate service change from the ability to play or redownload previously purchased Xbox 360 games. Do not use the app’s status as evidence that a game purchase has disappeared, or assume a game redownload promise applies to movies and television content.
Xbox’s 2023 FAQ described “hundreds” of backward-compatible titles as continuing to be sold through newer storefronts. That was a dated, broad description, not a verified count of currently available games. There is no reliable total here for how many delisted games remain redownloadable or how many Xbox 360 titles can be bought today; the only useful check for a prospective purchase is the current listing for that exact title and region.
