Xanadu and GlobalFoundries (GF) announced a multi-year partnership on October 6, 2026, to develop and manufacture photonic components for quantum computers on GF’s 300 mm production line in Malta, New York. The initial targets are superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors (SNSPDs) and ultra-low-loss silicon nitride (SiN) photonics. The announcement describes planned industrialization—not completed production or demonstrated performance.
What the Xanadu–GF partnership covers
This is a manufacturing and process-development partnership. Xanadu brings photonic design and process expertise; GF brings semiconductor manufacturing capability. The stated aim is to move selected components from lab-scale prototyping toward industrial-grade production on GF’s 300 mm line in Malta, New York.
The companies identify two initial targets: SNSPDs, which detect photons, and an ultra-low-loss SiN platform, which routes light through photonic circuits. They also say they are exploring additional work packages for high-performance quantum modules. That later work is exploratory, not a confirmed deliverable.
Why photon detectors and SiN circuits matter
SNSPDs detect photons
Photonic quantum computers encode and process information using light. To read calculation outputs, a system needs detectors that can determine how many photons are present in a light pulse. Xanadu identifies SNSPDs as its detector platform; in the partnership announcement, photon-number-resolving detectors are described as sensors for counting photons in a pulse.

SiN photonics guides light
Photonic circuits direct photons through a system, much like circuit boards route electrical signals. Xanadu describes its SiN photonics as optical circuit boards. The announcement presents detection and low-loss optical routing as complementary parts of its photonic architecture: one measures photons, while the other guides them through the computation.
What a 300 mm manufacturing line changes—and what it does not
A 300 mm line processes wafers at semiconductor-foundry scale. Moving designs and processes onto such a line is intended to provide a route beyond lab prototyping toward repeatable, industrial-grade manufacturing. The announcement does not report that the transfer is complete, nor does it give output volume, manufacturing yields, a production schedule, or independent verification of the process.

The companies frame the planned work as supporting future fault-tolerant demonstrators and, over the longer term, a quantum-data-center objective. They also project possible benefits such as faster systems and lower chip overhead. Those are expectations, not results measured in the announcement; it identifies technology transfer, yield, quality, and supply-chain risks.

What has been announced versus what remains ahead
- Announced: A multi-year partnership; SNSPDs and ultra-low-loss SiN photonics as initial targets; and GF’s Malta 300 mm line as the intended manufacturing setting.
- Still exploratory: Additional work packages for high-performance quantum modules.
- Not demonstrated in the announcement: Completed technology transfer, volume production, yields, system-level speed or overhead improvements, or operational fault-tolerant systems.
Xanadu CEO Christian Weedbrook said, “Transitioning quantum computing technology to a high-volume manufacturing line is fundamental to delivering quantum computing at scale.” GF Vice President of Quantum Technology Solutions Nicholas Sergeant said the partnership “creates a path to industrialize the critical components needed to accelerate the deployment of fault-tolerant systems and enable future quantum computing architectures.” Both statements describe the intended path and ambition, not completed manufacturing or deployment.
