Download your X archive and save the ZIP file before you deactivate your account. X’s export is free and can include posts, Direct Messages, media, follower and following lists, and other account information. It may take a few days to prepare, and deactivation begins a 30-day window after which X says the account is deleted. Requesting the archive is not enough: wait for the ready notice, download the file while logged in, and check that it opens before deactivating.
What should I do before deleting my X account?
Use this order: confirm your email, request the archive, wait for X’s notice, download and check the ZIP, then handle subscriptions and connected apps before deactivating. A request only queues the export; it is not a copy you can rely on until the ZIP is saved on your device.
- Confirm the email address on your X account. X requires a confirmed address for an archive request. Check that you can access the email account and the phone number associated with X, since the app may ask you to verify your identity.
- Request your archive in X settings. Use the web or app path below. Do this before deactivation.
- Wait for the ready notification. X says preparation “may take a few days.” It can email the confirmed address and, if the app is installed, send a push notification.
- Download the ZIP while signed in. Use the same X account and, on the web, the same browser you’ll use to download. Save the file locally.
- Unpack and check the archive. Open the archive viewer on a desktop browser and spot-check the information you care about, such as posts, messages, and media. Keep the original ZIP as well.
- Protect the export. It may contain private messages, contact information, and login IPs. Store it offline or encrypted; do not upload the whole archive to an untrusted site or cleaner.
- Review subscriptions and connected apps, then deactivate. Cancel app-store subscriptions yourself, revoke third-party access, and log out of other devices before starting the 30-day period.
- Stay logged out for 30 days. Logging in during the deactivation period restores the account. If you want permanent deletion, do not sign in during that window.
How do I request my X archive on the web?
On x.com, open Download an archive of your data while signed in, or follow the menu path. X’s web labels may differ slightly from the app’s labels.

- In the left navigation, select More.
- Choose Settings and privacy, then Your account.
- Select Download an archive of your data.
- Confirm your password and complete any identity check shown. Some current web flows display Send code or Verify it’s you.
- Select Request archive (some flows label the request button Request data).
- When X says the archive is ready, return to the download section and select Download archive, or use the email’s Download button.
For the web download, X’s instructions require you to be logged into the same account in the same browser you use to download the ZIP. An email notification does not mean the archive is already saved to your device.

How do I request the archive in the X app?
In the iOS or Android app, request the export from your account’s data settings and complete the code check. App wording differs from the web path, so look for the data and permissions section if a label is not an exact match.
- Tap your profile icon in the top menu, then Settings and privacy.
- Tap Account.
- Under Data and permissions, tap Your X data.
- Tap Send code to verify using the email or phone number on file, then enter the code. If neither is available, X may direct you to Account information to add one.
- Under Download your data, next to X, tap Request data.
- When the archive is ready, return to the same section and tap Download archive, or use the email’s download button while logged in.
How long does the X archive take, and when should I download it?
X’s official guidance is that preparing the archive “may take a few days”; it does not promise a same-day or same-hour file. Leave the account active while you wait, and download as soon as X notifies you that it is ready.
X does not publish how long the download link remains valid, and independent guides give conflicting estimates. Do not plan around a particular expiry period: if you receive the notice, download the ZIP promptly. If the link no longer works, request a fresh archive while the account is still active.
The export is a snapshot taken when you request it, not a continuously updated feed. Posts or other changes made while the job is being prepared may not be included. If you need those too, make another request before deactivating and save the resulting file.
What is inside the X data ZIP?
X describes the archive as HTML and JSON data that lets you browse a snapshot of your account information, beginning with your first post. The official contents list includes profile details, posts, Direct Messages, Moments, attached media, followers and following, your address book, Lists, inferred interests and demographic information, and information about ads you have seen or engaged with, among other data.

X’s README describes the data files as machine-readable JSON with a .js extension, so a text editor can open them. Folder names may change across exports; the HTML viewer is a more accessible starting point when it works. X does not publish an average archive size. Media-heavy accounts may have large files, so allow enough local storage and use a computer for unpacking and browsing.
Downloading the archive does not delete posts or remove anything from X. It gives you a copy. The export is also not a snapshot of everything other people or websites have preserved: it is an account-data export, not an archive of the public web.
Why must I download the archive before deactivating?
Deactivation makes the account unavailable for normal use, and X’s instructions say to request the data before deactivation. You need an active, signed-in account to complete the download flow; X also says that after 30 days without signing back in, account information is no longer available in its Production Tools.
That is why the safe checkpoint is a saved, checked ZIP—not a request confirmation, a pending email, or a promise to download it later. Whether an archive job already in progress will finish after deactivation is not established; do not rely on it. Finish and check the download first.
How do I deactivate X after saving my data?
Deactivation is the first step of permanent deletion; X does not offer a separate immediate-delete button. The account remains restorable for 30 days after deactivation. If you do not access it during that period, X says the account is deleted and the username is no longer associated with it.

- In the app, open Settings and privacy, then Your account (called Account in some app builds) → Deactivate your account.
- Read X’s deactivation notice, select Deactivate, enter your password, and confirm. In some app flows, the final control is labeled Yes, deactivate.
- Do not log in for 30 days if you want the account to be permanently deleted. Signing in during that period restores the account.
If the account is locked or suspended and the regular settings path is unavailable, X directs users to its deactivate-or-close-account form. If your reason for considering deletion is a missing post, an incorrect follower count, or a compromised account, X says to use troubleshooting or support rather than treating deactivation as a fix.

What happens to DMs, subscriptions, apps, and your username?
Deactivation has effects beyond the profile page. Check the following before starting the 30-day countdown.
Direct Messages
X says your DMs are not deleted during the 30-day deactivation period. When the period ends and the account is deleted, messages you sent are also deleted according to X’s help information. Save any information you need in the archive before deactivation.
X Premium and Super Follows
Subscriptions purchased through the X app do not automatically cancel when you deactivate. Cancel them through the platform where you subscribed—for example, Apple Subscriptions or Google Play. X says subscriptions purchased on x.com automatically cancel after deactivation.
Connected third-party apps
Revoke apps that can sign in to X before you deactivate, using Settings → Security and account access → Apps and sessions. A connected app that signs in during the 30-day window can reactivate the account, so log out of devices and services that have X access.

Username and information that may remain elsewhere
Your username remains associated with the account during the 30-day period. After deletion, it is no longer tied to your account and may become available for someone else to register. An old mention could then lead to a different owner’s profile.
X may retain some information from a deactivated account for platform and user safety. Separately, deleting your posts or account does not erase copies other people have made, such as screenshots, copied text, or quoted posts with someone else’s commentary; search-engine and third-party caches may also persist. Plain reposts of a deleted post are removed, according to 2026 reporting about X’s help guidance.
What if I want to keep my username instead of deleting the account?
If retaining your @username matters more than deleting the account, do not deactivate: keep the account and remove posts instead. That is a different outcome from account deletion, and it does not guarantee that copies or commentary elsewhere disappear.

Some bulk-delete tools ask for an archive because X’s public API exposes only roughly the newest 3,200 posts, according to PrunePosts in 2026. That is a tool-related limitation, not a reason to upload your entire archive to an unknown service. If you use a process that needs archive files, remove private-message, IP-audit, and media files it does not need before sharing anything.
What should I do if the archive request or download fails?
Most problems come down to account verification, the active login session, or the export not being ready yet. Use the matching fix below rather than deactivating and hoping the download will work later.

- No code arrives: check that the email or phone number on file is current and accessible. If neither is on the account, follow X’s prompt to add contact information under Account information.
- The download button fails: sign in to the same X account and use the same browser session as the download flow. Do not rely on opening the email link in a browser where you are signed out or logged into another account.
- The archive is not ready: wait for X’s email or app notice; its stated preparation time is “a few days,” not a guaranteed interval.
- The link no longer works: X does not publish its link lifetime. Request a fresh archive while the account is still active.
- You need more than the standard archive and live in the EU or EFTA: X says residents there may use its Privacy form to request additional account information.
For a locked or suspended account, the normal in-settings route may not be available; use X’s account-deactivation or closure process. Do not use a third-party site that claims it can retrieve your X archive by asking for your password: the official export is requested from X account settings.

Can I keep posting while X prepares my archive?
Your account remains active until you deactivate it, but the export is a snapshot from the time of the request. Anything posted after that point may not appear in the file.
Can I download the archive on a phone?
X’s archive viewer is intended for a desktop browser, and the ZIP can include substantial media files. Save the download somewhere with enough storage, then inspect it on a computer if the in-browser viewer does not work.
