Microsoft’s WSL 3.0.2 pre-release adds automatic virtual NUMA (vNUMA) for large WSL virtual machines and experimental sparse virtual hard disk (VHD) creation. It is not a stable release: Microsoft’s release page labels it “Pre-release” and dates it October 5, 2026. The notes describe the changes but do not establish server compatibility limits, performance gains, or a safe upgrade path for existing disks.

What WSL 3.0.2 changes

The two headline changes address different problems: automatic vNUMA is about configuring large virtual machines, while sparse VHD creation concerns virtual-disk storage.

Change Problem addressed What the release notes establish
Automatic vNUMA for large WSL VMs Large-VM configuration and launch Microsoft lists the feature, but gives no thread threshold, server compatibility list, or measured performance result.
Experimental sparse VHD creation Virtual-disk storage use Microsoft lists sparse VHD creation and labels it experimental, without a setup procedure or compatibility details.

These are changelog entries, not evidence that WSL now supports every server size or that either change improves performance by a particular amount. Read the Microsoft WSL 3.0.2 release notes for the exact release status and change list.

What automatic vNUMA means for large WSL VMs

NUMA (non-uniform memory access) describes systems in which processors have different access paths to memory. Virtual NUMA presents corresponding topology to a virtual machine. Microsoft’s release notes say WSL 3.0.2 enables automatic vNUMA for large WSL VMs; they do not explain its implementation or publish a supported maximum size.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Phoronix reported that the change followed a bug report by an Intel engineer describing WSL failing to launch on a host with more than 256 threads. That figure is reported bug context, not a Microsoft-published threshold or a compatibility guarantee. The release notes do not name validated server models or promise a particular speedup.

What sparse VHD means in WSL

A sparse virtual hard disk can use less storage on the Windows host than its full virtual capacity might suggest. Microsoft’s September 2023 WSL update described sparse VHDs as disks that can automatically shrink as they are used, potentially reducing the space they consume on Windows. That post documented an experimental sparseVhd Boolean setting, defaulting to false, and the command wsl --manage <distro> --set-sparse <true/false> for managing existing distributions.

The September 2023 documentation is historical, so its settings and behavior should not be assumed to apply unchanged to 3.0.2. Microsoft’s May 2024 update still described the per-distribution sparse-management command as experimental. The 3.0.2 notes explicitly add experimental sparse VHD creation but do not say whether the older configuration mechanism has changed, what safeguards apply, or whether existing distributions should be converted. They do not provide a current version-specific setup recipe.

Can WSL 3.0.2 run on a server with more than 256 threads?

The reported launch failure above 256 threads helps explain why automatic vNUMA matters, but it does not answer whether a particular server is supported. Microsoft’s release notes state no thread threshold and provide no server compatibility list. Treat 3.0.2 as a pre-release change to test against your own workload and host configuration, not as confirmation that all large servers will work.

Is WSL 3.0.2 stable, and should it replace a production Linux server?

No. Microsoft labels 3.0.2 “Pre-release,” so it should not be described as a stable or generally available update.

Nor do these release notes recommend WSL as a production Linux server platform. A 2017 Microsoft announcement described WSL as intended for local interactive use and advised Hyper-V virtual machines and/or Docker containers for production Linux workloads on Windows Server. That is historical guidance, not proof of Microsoft’s current policy; the 3.0.2 notes make no production-workload claim. See the WSL-on-Windows-Server announcement for that historical distinction.
