It provides a managed Linux environment, works on Windows Home, and is the documented Docker Desktop development path. Choose a separately managed Hyper-V Linux virtual machine when you specifically need its VM lifecycle or administration controls—not because WSL 2 is unrelated to Hyper-V technology. Keep Linux projects in the WSL filesystem for better build and file-watching performance.
What “WSL 2 vs. Hyper-V” means for Linux containers
Linux containers share the kernel of their container host, so they cannot run directly on the Windows kernel. On Windows, virtualization provides the Linux environment containers need. Microsoft’s Linux containers setup guide describes the Windows path using Docker Desktop.
WSL 2 is already virtualized: it runs a Linux kernel in a managed, lightweight virtual machine and uses a subset of Hyper-V architecture through the Virtual Machine Platform. Microsoft says WSL 2 is available across Windows desktop editions. So this is not a simple choice between “virtualization” and “no virtualization.” It is a choice between a managed WSL development environment and a separately managed Linux guest VM.
A third option is easy to confuse with those two: Hyper-V isolation for Windows containers. In that mode, each Windows container runs in its own optimized VM and kernel. It is a distinct Windows-container isolation choice, not a direct alternative or performance comparison for Linux containers running through WSL 2. See Microsoft’s overview of Hyper-V isolation.

WSL 2 and a separate Hyper-V VM compared

Choose the setup that matches your workflow
Docker Desktop and everyday Linux container development
Use Docker Desktop’s WSL 2 backend unless you have a specific reason to administer a separate Linux guest. Microsoft’s Dev Containers setup guidance lists Docker Desktop with the WSL 2 based engine as a prerequisite. If builds or file watchers feel slow, check project location before changing virtualization setups.
Windows Home
WSL 2 is available on Windows Home, so a Pro upgrade is not needed just to use the WSL 2 Linux container path. A particular full Hyper-V setup may have different edition requirements; verify those for the exact host configuration before choosing it.

A separately administered Linux VM
Choose a Hyper-V Linux guest when you need a conventional VM boundary, explicit guest lifecycle, or administration separate from the WSL workflow. You will manage the guest and its Docker arrangement yourself. Confirm the Windows edition, firmware virtualization setting, and other host prerequisites for the configuration you plan to use.
Windows containers with stronger isolation
Investigate Hyper-V isolation if the workload is Windows containers and the goal is stronger isolation. Microsoft describes each Hyper-V-isolated Windows container as running in its own optimized VM and kernel; this is a different decision from running Linux containers through WSL 2.

A virtual machine or cloud PC as the Windows host
Check that the outer platform exposes nested virtualization. Microsoft documents enabling ExposeVirtualizationExtensions on a Hyper-V parent and states that WSL 2 in a Hyper-V VM is supported with nesting. Other host platforms have their own support requirements. Nested virtualization can also add latency and consume additional resources.
Improve Linux I/O before comparing performance
Where the files live can matter more than which virtualization option you choose. In WSL 2, Windows-hosted files accessed across operating systems use a file-sharing path. Microsoft recommends keeping Linux projects in the WSL filesystem for substantially better Linux I/O, especially for builds and file watching. Clone or move the project into a location such as /home/your-user/project rather than working from a path under C:. The same general principle applies to a separate Linux VM: Linux tools work most naturally with files on that guest’s own filesystem.

There is no apples-to-apples benchmark in the cited Microsoft guidance that establishes a universal speed winner between WSL 2 and a separately configured Hyper-V Linux VM. The supported performance guidance is narrower: cross-OS file access can be slower, and nested virtualization can add overhead. Treat broad claims that one option is always faster with caution; results depend on the workload, storage location, hardware, and VM configuration.

- Check host support. Confirm your Windows version and that hardware virtualization is enabled in firmware. Ensure the WSL and Virtual Machine Platform features are enabled. Microsoft’s WSL troubleshooting guide identifies missing Virtual Machine Platform or disabled firmware virtualization as common causes of startup error
0x80370102. - Use Docker Desktop’s WSL 2 engine. Enable the WSL 2 based engine in Docker Desktop, then enable integration for the Linux distribution you intend to use as needed.
- Keep the project in Linux storage. Clone or move the code into the distribution’s filesystem, for example under
/home/your-user/, before judging build or file-watching performance. - Check nesting if Windows itself is virtualized. Ask the outer host administrator to expose nested virtualization and confirm the platform supports the configuration. Account for possible resource and latency overhead.
Bottom line
For typical Docker Desktop development with Linux containers, choose WSL 2 and store projects in its Linux filesystem. Use a separate Hyper-V Linux VM when you need explicit VM management, and confirm the host’s edition and virtualization prerequisites. If you mean Hyper-V isolation for Windows containers, evaluate that separately: it addresses a different container workload.
