WSL 1.0.0 was the first stable release of the separately serviced Windows Subsystem for Linux package in the Microsoft Store—not a new release of the WSL 1 Linux architecture. Microsoft announced its general availability on November 22, 2022, making the Store package the default for new installs and bringing it to Windows 10 as well as Windows 11.
What WSL 1.0.0 meant
Before this milestone, the Store package was labeled Preview. Microsoft said it was dropping that label and making the package generally available. The number 1.0.0 identifies the package release; it does not mean that WSL 1 became version 1.0 or that WSL 1 and WSL 2 were replaced. Microsoft’s later WSL history describes 1.0.0 as the first stable release of the new package. Microsoft’s November 2022 announcement and its May 2025 WSL history distinguish the package milestone from the underlying WSL technology.
There are two separate choices to keep straight: the WSL package’s servicing route (the Store package or the Windows in-box component) and the distro architecture (WSL 1 or WSL 2). Installing or updating the Store package does not, by itself, convert a distribution from one architecture to the other.
What changed in the 1.0.0 package
Microsoft’s announcement focused on a broader set of capabilities and a faster update route, rather than a change to the meaning of WSL 1 or WSL 2.

wsl --installwould get the Store version by default; existing users could update withwsl --update. - Systemd: The package added opt-in support for systemd.
- Linux GUI apps on Windows 10: Users on Windows 10 gained this capability, which had previously been available only on Windows 11.

wsl --installgained--no-launchand--web-download. - Expanded virtual disk workflows: Users could mount a VHD with
wsl --mount --vhd, assign a mount name with--name, import or export VHDs directly, and register an existing VHDX as a distro withwsl --import-in-place. - Version and update controls: The
wsl --versioncommand and additional update options made it easier to inspect and manage the installed WSL package. - Bundled components: WSLg and the WSL kernel were packaged together, so separate MSI installers were no longer needed.
- Diagnostics and fixes: Microsoft also cited improved error printing and “100s of bug fixes and improvements.” That is the announcement’s wording, not a precise fix count.
Craig Loewen, Microsoft’s Principal Product Manager, summarized the servicing benefit this way: “Using the Store version of WSL allows you to get updates to WSL much faster compared to when it was a Windows component.” The announcement described the Store package as the route for new functionality; the in-box version would continue to receive critical bug fixes.
Does WSL 1.0.0 work on Windows 10?
Yes. Microsoft announced the generally available Store package for both Windows 10 and Windows 11. Its November 2022 announcement specified these backport prerequisites at launch:

These are the requirements stated in the November 2022 announcement, not current installation guidance. Windows requirements and available installation paths can change, so check Microsoft’s current WSL installation documentation before setting up WSL.
How to update WSL through the Store package
In the November 2022 release announcement, Microsoft gave wsl --update as the command existing users could use to update to the Store version. New users could use wsl --install, which selected the Store package by default in that release. For present-day setup and update instructions, use Microsoft’s current installation documentation because the supported requirements and behavior may have changed since launch.

Is WSL 1.0.0 the same as WSL 1?
No. WSL 1 and WSL 2 are distro architectures; 1.0.0 was the Store package’s version number. Microsoft’s comparison documentation describes WSL 1 as using a translation layer and WSL 2 as running a Linux kernel in a managed lightweight virtual machine. WSL 2 is the current default distro type in that documentation. Microsoft’s WSL version comparison explains the practical differences.

Microsoft recommends WSL 2 generally but notes that WSL 1 can be useful for cross-operating-system filesystem work. Choose based on the workload: the need for a real kernel and system-call compatibility, virtualization availability, where files are stored, systemd requirements, and any network, memory, or device constraints.

WSL 1 distro support and a launch-time caveat
Although the Store package and WSL 1 architecture are distinct, Microsoft said at launch that running WSL 1 distributions still required the optional Windows component called “Windows Subsystem for Linux.” The announcement said it could be enabled during setup with wsl --install --enable-wsl1 or enabled manually.
Microsoft also listed a launch-time limitation: the Store version would not start in session 0, citing GitHub Actions and SSH connections to the Windows machine as examples. That describes the issue reported with the package at launch; it should not be read as confirmation that the same limitation applies to current releases.
