For monitors, QHD and WQHD usually mean 2560 × 1440 pixels, while UHD—often marketed as 4K—usually means 3840 × 2160. “2K” is less reliable: it can mean 2048 × 1080 in technical usage, but some monitor marketing uses it for QHD. When comparing displays, check the stated pixel dimensions rather than relying on the label.

What do QHD and WQHD mean?

QHD stands for Quad HD, and WQHD stands for Wide Quad HD. For computer monitors, both commonly refer to a 2560 × 1440 resolution, also called 1440p. That works out to 3,686,400 pixels. Intel groups QHD and WQHD under this common monitor resolution in its gaming monitor guide.

The “quad” describes the pixel count relative to 1280 × 720 HD: 2560 × 1440 has four times as many pixels. It does not mean four times the pixels of Full HD (1920 × 1080).

Does 2K mean the same thing as QHD?

Not consistently. Lenovo’s terminology guide uses 2K for 2048 × 1080, a dimension associated with digital cinema. Some consumer monitor marketing calls 2560 × 1440 “2K,” however. Because the label is used in different ways, a monitor described as 2K may not have the dimensions you expect. Check its specification for the actual resolution.

What is the difference between UHD and 4K?

UHD, or Ultra High Definition, commonly means 3840 × 2160 pixels on a 16:9 monitor. It is often sold as 4K or 2160p and contains 8,294,400 pixels, according to Samsung for Business’s 2026 comparison.

“4K” is also used for 4096 × 2160, a wider format described in the DisplayPort/VESA explainer. That dimension is less common in consumer monitors. In ordinary monitor shopping, UHD/4K usually refers to 3840 × 2160, but the dimensions settle any ambiguity. At 3840 × 2160, there are exactly four times as many pixels as at 1920 × 1080.

Quick comparison of the labels

Label Common monitor dimensions What to watch for
QHD / WQHD / 1440p 2560 × 1440 QHD and WQHD commonly describe the same monitor resolution.
2K 2048 × 1080 in Lenovo’s technical usage Some consumer monitor listings use 2K for QHD; verify the dimensions.
UHD / consumer 4K / 2160p 3840 × 2160 The usual 16:9 UHD monitor resolution.
DCI-style 4K 4096 × 2160 A less common 4K dimension, noted by DisplayPort/VESA.

How to choose between QHD and UHD

UHD has more pixels, but that alone does not determine which monitor is best for you. Consider the panel’s physical size, what you do on it, the refresh rate you want, and whether your computer can output the desired mode. Samsung’s guidance positions QHD as a step up from Full HD for gaming, creative work, and multitasking, and UHD/4K for detailed imagery and 4K workflows; those are general use-case recommendations, not a universal ranking.

Consider screen size as well as resolution

The same resolution spread across a smaller panel produces a higher pixel density than it does on a larger panel. Compare both the pixel dimensions and the physical screen size when assessing how sharp text and images may look. Samsung Canada’s monitor resolution guide discusses resolution alongside screen size.

Check whether your setup can drive the mode

A display’s resolution is only one part of the video signal. The required bandwidth also changes with refresh rate and color depth. Intel’s article, last reviewed August 7, 2025, gives these requirements for an 8-bit signal:

Resolution and refresh rate Bandwidth listed by Intel
2560 × 1440 at 60 Hz 5.63 Gbps
2560 × 1440 at 144 Hz 14.08 Gbps
3840 × 2160 at 60 Hz 12.54 Gbps
3840 × 2160 at 144 Hz 31.35 Gbps

These are the figures Intel lists for those specific 8-bit modes in its bandwidth guide; changing refresh rate or color depth changes the signal requirements. Check the computer’s video output, the monitor’s input, and the cable together. A connection that supports a resolution at a lower refresh rate may not support the same resolution at a higher refresh rate.

Which label should you trust?

Use the acronym as a clue, not a guarantee. QHD/WQHD typically means 2560 × 1440 and UHD/consumer 4K typically means 3840 × 2160, but “2K” and “4K” can vary by context. Compare the stated width and height, then check the panel size and connection specifications against your needs.
