wp-content/uploads is the default folder where a typical WordPress site stores uploaded media, such as images, videos, audio, and documents. You usually manage those files through the WordPress Media Library—not by working with the folder directly. The actual file path and public URL can differ if the site’s settings or hosting configuration changes them.
What is the WordPress uploads folder?
A WordPress site stores media files on its server. In a standard setup, those files go in wp-content/uploads. The Media Library is the dashboard interface for finding and managing the media; the folder is where the files are stored on the filesystem.
WordPress’s Media Settings documentation identifies this as the default path since WordPress 3.5. It is a default, not a guarantee: site configuration, hosting, or a multisite setup can change the active location or URL.
How to upload files to WordPress
Upload from the Media Library
- In the WordPress dashboard, go to Media → Add New.
- Drag files into the upload area, select files from your device, or use the browser uploader. The screen supports uploading multiple files.
- Open Media → Library to find an uploaded item, review its details, copy its file URL, or manage it.
The Media Add New screen guide explains the available upload methods. Its displayed maximum upload size is set by your hosting provider, so the limit can vary from site to site.

Upload while editing a post or page
You can also add media while editing content. WordPress automatically attaches media uploaded during post editing to that post. Files uploaded from the Media Library are initially unattached, though you can use them in content later. See WordPress’s guide to image and file attachments.
How WordPress organizes uploads
WordPress can organize uploads into year- and month-based subfolders. When that option is enabled, a file uploaded in June 2018 would be stored in a path such as wp-content/uploads/2018/06. WordPress creates folders as needed when the parent wp-content directory is writable.

To check the setting, go to Settings → Media and review whether uploads should be organized into month- and year-based folders. Turning this option on or off changes the date-based folder structure; it does not change the Media Library’s role as the dashboard for managing media.
What happens when you insert a media file?
Inserting a file into a post or page can have different results depending on the link or display option you choose. A direct file link opens the media file itself. A link to the attachment page opens a WordPress page for that item. An embedded image or other media can appear in the content without linking to the file. These choices are not interchangeable; choose the result that fits how readers should access the item.

How to find the active uploads path and URL
For development work, do not assume that every site uses the literal wp-content/uploads path. WordPress’s wp_upload_dir() function reference documents how the function returns the active upload path and URL. Its result can reflect site options and constants, and it can report an error if it cannot create a directory because the parent directory is not writable.
Why a WordPress media upload might fail
Check the upload-size limit
Look at the maximum file size displayed on Media → Add New. That limit is set by the hosting provider. If the file exceeds it, ask your host what options are available for your configuration rather than assuming there is one universal WordPress limit.

Check directory write permissions
WordPress needs the uploads directory to be writable for normal operation. In the dashboard, open Tools → Site Health and review the filesystem-permissions information. WordPress’s Site Health documentation advises contacting the host if a required directory is not writable. The correct fix depends on the hosting setup; do not apply a generic permissions change without understanding its effect.

For routine media management, use the Media Library to locate and delete an item. WordPress documents the Library’s delete action, but that alone does not establish what happens to every copy in backups, caches, or external storage used by a particular site. If you need to ensure a file is removed everywhere, check how that site’s hosting and storage are configured.
