A peer-reviewed study reports population declines and changes in the penguin community at Zavodovski Island, home to the world’s largest penguin colony. But the accessible publication record does not disclose how large the declines were, which years were compared, or what caused them. The headline word “alarming” therefore cannot yet be quantified from the public records cited here.
Which penguin colony is the study about?
The study concerns Zavodovski Island in the South Sandwich Islands, and its population mapping covers chinstrap and macaroni penguins. It is not the king penguin colony on Île aux Cochons, a different location and species. The University of Edinburgh lists the paper by Ratcliffe and colleagues, “Population declines and changes in community composition at the world’s largest penguin colony,” as accepted/in press in Current Biology on 30 September 2026. What is known about the decline?
The accessible publication record and British Antarctic Survey (BAS) dataset metadata confirm that declines were reported, but neither provides the new population estimates or enough detail to calculate their size. They do not establish the comparison period, species-specific percentage change, or causes. It would be misleading to turn “decline” into a particular count or percentage without those results.
For context only, a 2024 International Seabird Group conference abstract gave earlier estimates of approximately 600,000 pairs of chinstrap penguins and 90,000 pairs of macaroni penguins at Zavodovski. Those are pre-survey estimates, not the accepted paper’s newly reported counts. BAS population-trends dataset record

How was the island surveyed?
The BAS mapping record describes a 2023–24 baseline survey and colony-boundary mapping using satellite images from 2011, 2016, 2020, 2022 and 2025. It says trends over the preceding 14 years were derived from estimated nesting density and colony area. These are elements of the method; the metadata do not provide the final trend values.
Drone images and manual calibration
Researchers collected drone imagery on 14 December 2023, during incubation, using a DJI Mavic 3T. BAS reports a ground sampling distance of 1.9–2.7 cm and coverage of more than 90% of predator-occupied areas. That resolution describes image detail, not counting accuracy. A semi-automated nest classifier was calibrated against manual counts in 114 quadrats measuring 5 × 5 metres. Colony boundaries were digitised from satellite images; where cloud obscured an area, the mapping used the closest image in which it was visible. The published metadata describe these procedures but do not report a new population count.
What should readers look for when the full results are available?
- Separate figures by species: chinstrap and macaroni penguins should not be combined into a single decline figure.
- Clear endpoints: the comparison should identify the baseline and final years for each estimate.
- Population versus habitat measures: colony area, nest density and estimated breeding population are related but distinct measures.
- Coverage and uncertainty: interpretation should account for image coverage, the documented exceptions and the limits of the counting method.
- Evidence for causes: a measured decline alone does not identify why it happened.
What the tracking work can—and cannot—show
BAS metadata also describes tracking 12 breeding adult chinstrap penguins in 2023–24 with SPOT 367A platform transmitter terminals. One tag failed after eight days, and estimated location accuracy varied from about 5 to 100 km depending on conditions. This is movement and foraging context; it is not a population-decline estimate and does not, by itself, establish a cause.

Why the Île aux Cochons figures do not apply
A 2018 report described a different story: king penguins on Île aux Cochons, with a reported fall from about 2 million to 200,000. Those numbers are not estimates for Zavodovski, and they concern neither the same colony nor the same species. Scientific Reports study on Île aux Cochons

The BAS dataset record estimates that the underlying population-mapping data will be released in November 2026, alongside publication of the associated manuscript. Until the paper or data disclose the species-specific estimates and comparison years, the scale and causes of the Zavodovski declines remain unspecified in the accessible records.
