If your work email is missing from Mac Mail, first work out whether the account is absent, a mailbox is hidden, messages are being filtered, or Mail cannot connect. Those problems have different fixes. Check the account and sidebar before changing sign-in details or removing a work account.

Is the work account missing, or just its mail?

“Work email missing” can mean several things: the account is not listed in Mail, the account is present but disabled, a mailbox is hidden, individual messages are elsewhere, or the account is offline. Start with the account list, then check visibility and message filtering before troubleshooting connectivity.

Check whether Mail has the account

  1. In Mail, choose Mail > Accounts to review accounts, or choose Mail > Add Account if the work account is not listed.

  2. If the account is already used by other apps on your Mac, open System Settings > Internet Accounts, select the account, and make sure Mail is turned on.

Apple’s Add email accounts in Mail on Mac explains these options. Menu names and locations can vary by macOS version.

Check the Mail sidebar and account status

If the account exists but is not visible in the sidebar, show the sidebar, expand any collapsed section, and select the mailbox you want. Also confirm that the account is enabled in Mail: open Mail > Settings (or Preferences on some versions), select Accounts, and check Enable this account.

Apple’s steps for when you can’t see email messages in Mail cover sidebar visibility and account enablement.

Could messages be filtered or stored in another mailbox?

Search across mailboxes for a message you expect to find, then check Junk and Bin (called Trash in some configurations). Review Mail > Settings > Rules for rules that might move or remove messages. If search behaves unexpectedly, Apple recommends rebuilding the mailbox; see its message-visibility troubleshooting steps.

What does a connection or login warning mean?

Make sure the Mac has internet access, then look for a warning or status indicator next to the account in Mail. Click it to see the reported issue. A connection error can point to a service outage, credentials, or network access; it does not by itself identify which one is responsible.

Apple notes that a VPN or other software that monitors or interacts with network connections can affect Mail’s connectivity. If the Mac is online but Mail still cannot reach the server, check with your email provider or workplace administrator before changing managed network settings. Apple’s troubleshooting for sending or receiving email on Mac covers connection checks.

For Microsoft 365 or Exchange, reauthenticate before removing the account

If Mail asks you to sign in again, enter your credentials using your organization’s supported sign-in flow. Microsoft currently documents a disconnection issue affecting Microsoft 365 accounts in Apple Mail. Its suggested first step is to re-enter credentials; if that fails, it describes deleting and re-adding the Exchange account. See Microsoft’s Apple Mail reconnection guidance.

Before removing a work account, follow your employer’s device policy and consider whether it contains local-only messages or other data you need to preserve. A vendor-reported Microsoft 365 issue is one possible explanation, not proof that it caused every missing work account.

When should you contact your workplace help desk?

Ask your help desk which provider or account type to choose and which sign-in method your organization requires if setup fails, automatic setup does not complete, or your credentials are rejected. Work accounts can depend on organization-specific authentication and device policies. Microsoft’s Mac Mail setup guidance also directs users to their help desk when its setup steps do not resolve the problem.
