WordPress MCP Adapter is the official plugin that connects WordPress’s Abilities API to the Model Context Protocol (MCP). Installing it creates an MCP server that can make abilities explicitly marked public available to MCP clients; it does not automatically publish every ability or add AI features of its own. The latest release listed on the official releases page is v0.7.0, dated October 2, 2026.
What the WordPress MCP Adapter does
The adapter is protocol and server plumbing: it gives MCP-compatible clients a way to discover and use capabilities registered through WordPress’s Abilities API. The capabilities themselves come from WordPress core or plugins that register abilities. The adapter does not supply an AI assistant or create abilities by itself. The official project describes the adapter and its supported transports; the WordPress.org plugin listing explains its relationship to abilities and MCP exposure.
Depending on their purpose and configuration, abilities can be surfaced as MCP tools, resources, or prompts. Tools let a client invoke an action; resources provide information for a client to read; prompts provide prompt content. A client’s available capabilities therefore depend on what the site has registered and explicitly exposed, not merely on whether the adapter is active.
What becomes available to an MCP client
The default server includes three abilities that provide a discovery-and-execution path: discover available abilities, get information about an ability, and execute an ability. These are exposed as MCP tools. A client can use discovery to find what the site offers, inspect an ability before invoking it, and then request execution. Other tools, resources, or prompts depend on abilities registered by WordPress core or installed plugins and on how those abilities are configured for MCP. Activating the adapter alone should not be treated as a guarantee that a particular capability exists.
Exposure and permissions
Exposure is opt-in: the default MCP server makes abilities available only when they have been explicitly marked public for MCP. This is not the same as making every registered site ability visible to remote clients. Before connecting a client, review which abilities are marked public and what each one can do.

Public exposure does not bypass WordPress authorization. The adapter checks permissions as the current WordPress user before an ability runs. The effective access therefore depends both on whether an ability is exposed and on the current user’s permissions. Installation and connection options
The project recommends installing the canonical plugin rather than bundling the adapter as a Composer library inside another plugin. Its installation guide gives two ways to install the latest release.

Install through WP-CLI
- Run
wp plugin install https://github.com/WordPress/mcp-adapter/releases/latest/download/mcp-adapter.zip --activatefrom the WordPress installation. - Confirm the plugin is active. Activation initializes the default MCP server.
- Connect an MCP client using the transport and authentication setup appropriate to your site.
Install from the release ZIP
- Download the latest release ZIP from the official releases page.
- Install and activate it as a WordPress plugin.
- Use the default server endpoint or configure another supported transport for your client.
The default HTTP endpoint is /wp-json/mcp/mcp-adapter-default-server. The project also lists STDIO transport, including WP-CLI-based connections, and an interface for custom transports. The exact client configuration depends on the client and the site’s setup; the endpoint alone is not a complete connection or access-control configuration.
The installation documentation notes that WordPress’s plugin dependency mechanism requires directory listing and points to an open issue about submission support. Dependency and distribution mechanics can change, so check the current installation guide if you are distributing a plugin that depends on the adapter.

What changed in v0.7.0
The official releases page lists v0.7.0, released October 2, 2026, as the latest version. It adds support for MCP revision 2026-07-28 and uses schemas for the exact protocol revision. Clients requesting 2025-06-18 or 2024-11-05 can still connect through the 2025-11-25 schema. These are compatibility details, not a guarantee that every client or custom integration will work without changes. Check the release notes and changelog for the current version-specific information.
What developers should review before upgrading
Most sites using ordinary ability registration and the documented server creation flow may not need to change their integration. The v0.7.0 notes say ability registration, create_server(), and WordPress hooks continue working. The upgrade is more consequential for extensions that rely on internal structures or custom transport and handler behavior.

- Removed validation APIs: generated DTO classes, three validator classes, and a validation filter were removed. Search integrations for references to these classes or the filter.
- Custom transports and handlers: custom transports must delegate to
HttpRequestHandlerorMcpWireOrchestrator. Review the migration guide if an integration implements its own request handling. - Validation behavior: malformed components unsupported by every supported protocol revision are now rejected instead of silently repaired. Integrations that relied on permissive correction may need to fix their component definitions.
- Bundled library use: using the adapter as a bundled Composer library is deprecated; the project recommends the canonical WordPress plugin installation.
Read the v0.7.0 release notes and the linked migration guidance before upgrading any extension that depends on custom handlers, transports, validation APIs, or internal component structures.
Choosing an integration approach
