It limits which guesses are legal, but it does not tell you which legal guess is best. Choose it if you enjoy having clues enforced; use standard mode if you want the freedom to try a fresh-letter probe.
What is Wordle Hard Mode?
In the official Wordle instructions, the rule is: “Any revealed hints must be used in subsequent guesses.” A green tile means the letter is correct in that position; a yellow tile means the letter is in the answer but in a different position. After those clues appear, a later guess must retain the green placements and include the yellow letters.
In standard mode, you can set clues aside temporarily and submit a word made from letters you have not tested. Hard Mode does not allow that if the guess would ignore a revealed hint. It changes the set of guesses you may make; it does not automatically make the puzzle easier, harder, or more strategic.
Why does Wordle make you use yellow letters?
The requirement prevents a player from ignoring information already revealed by the board. If a letter is yellow, the game has established that it belongs in the answer, even though its position is wrong. A subsequent guess has to account for that clue rather than spending a turn on a word that omits the letter.

The restriction matters most when several answers are still plausible. A fresh-letter probe in standard mode may reveal information about many candidates at once, even if it is not itself a likely answer. Hard Mode removes that particular option when the probe fails to honor the clues.
How to choose a useful Hard Mode guess
- Record the constraints. Note each green letter in its fixed position and each yellow letter that still needs a valid position.
- Keep track of plausible answers. Use the feedback so far to narrow the words that could still fit, rather than treating every clue-compliant word as equally promising.
- Compare what legal guesses would reveal. When the candidate set is broad, favor a legal word that separates likely answers. A guess can obey every clue and still be a poor choice if it leaves the same uncertainty afterward.
- Decide whether to test or solve. If only a few plausible answers remain, guessing one directly may be sensible. If many remain, consider whether a legal probe could distinguish them before committing.
Do not reduce Hard Mode to “include the yellow letters.” Green placements also have to be respected, and feedback involving repeated letters can complicate what a clue means. A superficially plausible word may be invalid under the revealed constraints, or valid but unhelpful. The goal is to use the clues while reducing uncertainty—not merely to find any word that fits.

This is reasoning from the rules and published solver work, not a claim that one approach guarantees a particular result for human players. Should you play Wordle on Hard Mode?

Neither mode is universally better. The materials available do not establish that Hard Mode always improves scores or that it produces worse results for human players. The choice is mainly about whether you value an enforced constraint or the freedom to explore.

What published solver figures do—and do not—show
An IEEE COG 2022 paper, Using Wordle for Learning to Design and Compare Strategies, reports an average of 4.11 guesses for its stated Hard-Mode strategy across two simulation runs. The runs covered 4,630 games in total—two runs across a 2,315-answer set—and recorded 81 failures to solve within six attempts, reported as 1.75%.
Those figures describe that paper’s strategy and simulation setup, not a universal human average or a guaranteed result for someone enabling Hard Mode. The paper notes that random choices could produce different outcomes in repeated runs.

Changing the Hard Mode setting
The exact current menu path for turning Hard Mode on or off is not established here, and the available evidence does not confirm whether instructions differ among app, browser, account, or regional versions. Check the current in-game settings for the controls available in your version rather than relying on an unverified click path.
