If Word for Microsoft 365 on Windows silently saved a PDF to the wrong place when you chose SharePoint Online, Microsoft documented a specific bug in version 2609 (16.0.20430.x). Microsoft says its service fix finished rolling out on September 25, 2026. Close all open Office apps, reopen Word, and try again. For other wrong-folder cases, explicitly choose and verify the destination in the save dialog; they are not necessarily the same bug.

Does your problem match Microsoft’s documented bug?

The notice applies to Word for Microsoft 365 on Windows, version 2609 (16.0.20430.x), when saving a document as a PDF through Save or Save As to SharePoint Online. Microsoft reported that Word could show no error and put the PDF in C:UsersusernameAppDataLocalMicrosoftWindowsINetCacheContent.MSO under a random filename. The notice does not establish that other unexpected save locations—or saves to OneDrive or a local folder—have the same cause. Microsoft’s issue notice.

Fix the SharePoint PDF issue

  1. Close every open Office app, including Word.
  2. Reopen Word and retry saving the PDF to SharePoint Online.

Microsoft says the service change fixing the issue was fully rolled out on September 25, 2026, and instructs affected users to restart their Office apps so the change is picked up. If the same symptom continues after restarting, check the current status in Microsoft’s notice.

Choose the destination for a normal PDF save

Word desktop on Windows

For a document already saved, choose File > Save a Copy. For an unsaved document, choose File > Save As or Save a Copy. Select Browse, navigate to the folder you want, choose PDF as the file type, and inspect the displayed location before selecting Save. This is the direct way to select a destination for that save. Microsoft’s PDF instructions cover Word’s PDF save options.

Word for the web or Mac

The Windows desktop path is not universal. Microsoft’s PDF instructions describe Word for the web as File > Print > Save as PDF, followed by choosing a location. In Word for Mac, use Save As or Save a Copy and select PDF format. Confirm the destination in the flow you are using. Microsoft’s PDF instructions.

Change Word’s default save location

Set a local working folder

In Word for Windows, open File > Options > Save. Enter or browse to the preferred path in Default local file location. This setting changes Word’s local working folder; it does not set a universal destination for every Office app or guarantee that every PDF export route will use the document’s folder.

Set a recent folder as the default

Word also lets you set a recent folder as the default using the location dropdown in the save experience. Microsoft documents both this approach and the local-file-location option in its instructions for changing Word’s default file location.

Use the classic save dialog if needed

Microsoft says the cloud-focused save experience is oriented toward cloud locations, and signed-in Office files may default to OneDrive. To use the classic dialog, go to File > Options > Save and select Don’t show the Backstage when opening or saving files with keyboard shortcuts. Microsoft’s guidance also says F12 opens Save As. Even with a default configured, check the destination shown for the specific save. See Microsoft’s explanation of Word’s cloud save experience.

If the PDF is already missing from the chosen folder

For the matching SharePoint incident, look for a PDF with a random filename in the Content.MSO cache path above; Microsoft identifies that as the unexpected location. For other cases, first inspect the path shown in Word’s save dialog and browse to the intended folder. A report that Word defaults to OneDrive or that someone wants same-folder saves does not by itself identify the SharePoint defect. Community questions illustrate those requests but do not establish how common they are or prove the cause of an individual problem: Microsoft Q&A.
