For a Ruby application, use IMGKit when its Ruby API makes it easier to provide HTML or a URL, configure renderer options, and collect image bytes or save a file. Call wkhtmltoimage directly when you want your code to construct and run the command itself. Both approaches still need a compatible wkhtmltoimage executable.

What is the difference?

wkhtmltoimage is the renderer: a headless command-line utility that turns HTML into an image using Qt WebKit. The project says it does not require a display or display service. Its project documentation describes the utility; the Ubuntu Noble manual gives the invocation as wkhtmltoimage [OPTIONS]... <input file> <output file>.

IMGKit is a Ruby wrapper around that executable. Its README documents creating an instance from HTML, a URL, or a file, passing options understood by wkhtmltoimage, retrieving image output, and writing it to a file. It changes how Ruby code interfaces with the renderer; it does not replace the renderer binary.

Which approach fits your application?

Consideration IMGKit Direct command line
Interface from Ruby Use a Ruby-facing API to provide HTML, a URL, or a file and work with image output. Build and run the renderer command yourself.
Options Pass options accepted by wkhtmltoimage through the wrapper. Supply command-line arguments directly.
Executable dependency Requires a compatible wkhtmltoimage binary, installed separately or located through configuration. Requires the executable to be installed and available to the process.
Best fit When the Ruby API and output helpers reduce integration code. When your application already owns subprocess execution and you want direct control of command construction.

Neither choice is documented as faster or more reliable than the other. The practical decision is whether you want a Ruby wrapper or to manage subprocess invocation yourself, alongside the same renderer dependency.

Set up IMGKit and the executable

  1. Add the imgkit gem to your Ruby application following the IMGKit README.

  2. Install a compatible wkhtmltoimage executable separately, or use an appropriate binary package for your deployment. The README describes manual installation, a binary gem, and configuring the executable path.

  3. If the executable is not on the expected path, configure IMGKit with IMGKit.configure as shown in its README. Verify the path and executable in the same environment where the application runs.

Packaging versions differ by context. RubyGems lists wkhtmltoimage-binary 0.12.5, released on 15 August 2018, and describes Linux and Mac binaries. The Ubuntu Noble manual reports its distribution package as 0.12.6-2build2. Those records do not establish that the packaged builds are interchangeable, or that the older binary gem supports every current OS, architecture, or Ruby runtime. Confirm the exact deployment combination.

For other supported settings, consult the Ubuntu Noble manual. It documents the Ubuntu Noble package version 0.12.6-2build2; command options or behavior can depend on the executable build installed in your environment. The cited documentation establishes the CLI interface, not a particular Ruby subprocess implementation, so command escaping, process management, and error handling remain your application’s responsibility.

If your goal is a screenshot from a URL rather than maintaining a local renderer setup, ScreenshotNeo is an alternative website screenshot API. One GET request returns an image or PDF; the service can accept cookie banners before capture and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers indicate the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server exposes screenshot tools for AI agents.

  • Output differs between environments: compare the actual renderer builds and options being used. The cited version records belong to different packaging contexts and do not show that those builds behave identically.

  • Direct invocation fails: check the input and output arguments against the installed executable’s manual and ensure the process can access the input and write the output location.

Decision

Choose IMGKit when its Ruby interface and output helpers simplify your application. Choose direct invocation when you already manage subprocesses and prefer to supply renderer arguments yourself. In either case, treat installation, versioning, and executable location as deployment requirements.
