Wireless HDMI, Miracast, Google Cast (used by Chromecast-style devices), and Apple AirPlay all move content to a screen without a direct cable—but they work differently. A wireless HDMI kit carries an HDMI source’s output to a paired receiver; Miracast projects a compatible device’s screen; Cast and AirPlay can send supported app content to a receiver as well as mirror a screen. The right choice depends on the devices at both ends, the type of sharing you need, and the content’s protection requirements.

How the four options differ

Option What it does What to verify
Dedicated wireless HDMI A transmitter sends a source’s HDMI output over a dedicated wireless link to a receiver connected to the display. Check the exact kit’s source and display connections, power needs, supported resolution, content protection, range, and latency. These vary by model; the category alone does not establish common performance figures.
Miracast Projects a compatible source device’s display wirelessly to a compatible receiver. Confirm Miracast support at both ends. If the display lacks it, Microsoft says a Miracast adapter can plug into the display’s HDMI port. Protected content may require HDCP support across the sender and receiver path.
Google Cast / Chromecast A sender selects content and controls playback on a Cast receiver, which plays the session. Google requires sender and receiver to be on the same Wi-Fi network to begin a session. For Google streaming devices, check display HDCP support and Google’s stated 4K requirements.
AirPlay Streams supported audio, video, or photos, or mirrors an Apple device’s screen, to a compatible Apple TV, smart TV, or Mac. Confirm receiver compatibility and app support. Apple’s consumer setup uses the same Wi-Fi network, although Apple deployment documentation also describes peer-to-peer discovery.

Mirroring and app playback are not the same

Screen mirroring

Mirroring shows what is on the source device’s screen on the receiving display. It suits presentations, unsupported app interfaces, and other cases where the whole device view matters. Miracast is a wireless projection option; AirPlay can also mirror an iPhone or iPad screen. Mirroring is not the only way to use Cast or AirPlay.

Receiver-based playback

With Google Cast, a sender selects and controls a session while the receiver plays the content. Google for Developers defines a sender as “an app that plays the role of controller for the Cast session” in its Overview. Supported AirPlay apps can likewise stream selected content rather than mirror everything on the device. App support matters: Apple notes that some video apps may not support AirPlay.

Sending an HDMI signal

A wireless HDMI kit is a different kind of link: it carries the output from an HDMI source, such as a device with HDMI out, to a receiver at the display. It does not mean that a phone or computer without the required HDMI output can connect, nor does the label specify universal range, resolution, or responsiveness. Check the particular transmitter and receiver documentation.

What each option needs to work

Miracast: support at both ends

Microsoft advises checking that the wireless display supports Miracast and that the feature is enabled. If the display does not support it, Microsoft says to connect a Miracast adapter—sometimes called a dongle—to an HDMI port. The sending device must also support Miracast; adding an adapter to the TV does not make every phone or computer compatible. Microsoft’s PC-manufacturer guidance describes wireless projection as a real-time stream and says HDCP 2.0 or later is required to project protected content from most major video providers. This is a compatibility condition, not a guarantee that every protected-video app will work. See Microsoft’s wireless display connection guidance and wireless projection requirements.

Google Cast: a shared Wi-Fi network to start

Google says both the sender—such as a phone, tablet, or browser—and receiver must be connected to the same Wi-Fi network before a Cast session can begin. Its Cast Basics describes this requirement. A Cast-capable TV or streaming device is the receiver; a device that merely has HDMI is not automatically Cast-capable.

For Google streaming devices, Google Support lists an HDMI display with HDCP 1.3 or later as a requirement, and HDCP 2.2 for 4K. Google also lists a 4K-capable display and an internet connection of at least 20 Mbps for 4K viewing. These are Google’s requirements for its streaming devices, not universal specifications for wireless HDMI, Miracast, or all casting systems. Availability and performance can depend on the app, device, and network. See Google’s device requirements.

AirPlay: ordinary setup and peer-to-peer nuance

Apple’s consumer setup instructions for iPhone and iPad use a shared Wi-Fi network and describe streaming or mirroring to Apple TV, an AirPlay-compatible smart TV, or a Mac. Apple’s deployment documentation adds that AirPlay devices do not always need to share a network—or be on a network at all—because discovery can use Bonjour, Bluetooth IP address advertisement, or peer-to-peer discovery. That capability does not mean every combination of devices uses peer-to-peer mode; follow the setup instructions for the specific devices. Apple’s guides are Use AirPlay to stream video or mirror the screen of your iPhone or iPad and Use AirPlay with Apple devices.

How to choose

  • Choose a wireless HDMI kit when you need to carry an HDMI source’s output to a display. Confirm that the exact kit supports your source, required resolution and content protection, and the distance involved.
  • Consider Miracast when both the sender and receiver support it and you want to project a device screen, particularly with a compatible Windows device. Use an HDMI adapter only if the display lacks Miracast receiver support, and check compatibility with the source.
  • Consider Google Cast when the content is available to play on a Cast receiver and the sender can control it over the required Wi-Fi network. This receiver-based approach can let the phone act as a controller rather than requiring continuous full-screen mirroring.
  • Consider AirPlay for sharing from Apple devices to an AirPlay-compatible receiver when the app supports it. Use mirroring when you need to show the device screen rather than send supported app playback.
  • For gaming or precise cursor response, do not assume one category is faster. Comparable latency measurements are not established here; check measurements for the exact products or use a wired connection when response time is critical.

Check compatibility before buying or setting up

  1. Identify the source: does it provide HDMI output, support Miracast, offer a Cast sender app or browser, or support AirPlay?
  2. Identify the receiver: is it a wireless HDMI receiver, Miracast-capable display or adapter, Cast receiver, or AirPlay receiver? A display with an HDMI port alone does not provide every wireless protocol.
  3. Choose the sharing mode: decide whether you need full-screen mirroring or playback of content selected in a supported app.
  4. Check the connection method: verify whether the setup uses a dedicated wireless link, requires the same Wi-Fi network, or supports a peer-to-peer configuration.
  5. Verify protected-content support: check HDCP version and device/app compatibility throughout the signal path, not just at the display.
  6. Confirm performance requirements: look up the exact model’s resolution, HDR, range, and latency specifications. Do not infer them from the words “wireless HDMI,” “Miracast,” “Cast,” or “AirPlay.”

When a multi-protocol receiver may help

For a meeting room with a mix of Apple, Windows, and Cast-capable devices, a receiver supporting multiple protocols may reduce the need to standardize on one sender type. As one model-specific example, ScreenBeam’s April 2025 FLEX technical specifications list Miracast, AirPlay, and Google Cast support and state that HDCP content protection is available only for Miracast on that product. That specification illustrates why protocol support and protected-content support should be checked separately; it is not a general rule for all multi-protocol receivers.
