Choose a wired video doorbell if your existing low-voltage wiring, transformer and chime are compatible with the model and you want to avoid routine battery charging. Choose a battery-powered doorbell if you need more placement flexibility or want to avoid connecting doorbell-system wires—and are willing to recharge it periodically. Either way, connected features still depend on Wi-Fi and app setup.
What “wired” and “wireless” mean
For this decision, the terms mainly describe how the doorbell gets power and is installed. A wired model uses the home’s doorbell wiring. A battery-powered model can operate without those wires, although some battery models can also connect to compatible doorbell wires for gradual charging. “Wireless” does not mean that video, app setup or other connected features work without a network.
How to choose for your home
| Factor | Wired doorbell | Battery-powered doorbell |
|---|---|---|
| Power and charging | Can avoid routine battery removal and charging when correctly installed with compatible power. Confirm the selected model’s requirements. | Works without doorbell-system wires, but needs charging from time to time in wire-free use. Some models accept compatible wires for gradual charging; that does not guarantee every setup will keep the battery fully charged. |
| Placement | Best suited to an existing wired location, provided the wiring and chime are compatible. | Offers more flexibility where suitable doorbell wiring is absent or rewiring is not desired. |
| Indoor chime | Compatibility depends on the model, transformer, wiring and chime. Some devices require a supplied chime connector. | Chime arrangements vary. In Google’s cited Nest battery setup, wire-free installation cannot use the home’s chime; plan another compatible way to hear visitor alerts. |
| Installation | Involves electrical wiring and safe power isolation; transformer or chime work may be needed. | A wire-free installation avoids connecting doorbell-system wires, but still requires mounting, app setup, Wi-Fi and charging. |
| Connected features | Wi-Fi and internet remain relevant for setup and connected video. | Wi-Fi and internet remain relevant for setup and connected video. |
Choose wired when
- Your existing wiring and transformer meet the chosen doorbell’s power requirements.
- Your indoor chime is supported, including any required connector.
- You prefer not to remove a battery for charging and are comfortable arranging safe installation.
Choose battery-powered when
- You want to install at a location without suitable doorbell wiring.
- You want to avoid connecting to the existing doorbell circuit.
- You can accommodate periodic charging and have a plan for visitor notifications if your chime will not work.
Check compatibility before buying
Do not judge compatibility by voltage alone: transformer capacity, power requirements, wiring and chime arrangement can all matter. Requirements are model-specific, not a universal standard.
For example, Google’s compatibility table lists 8–24 V AC for the Nest Doorbell (battery); 16–24 V AC in North America and 12–24 V AC globally for the original wired model; and 16–24 V AC in North America for the wired second- and third-generation models. Google also lists power requirements for these devices. These figures apply to the named Google models and regions, not to every video doorbell. Check the current guide for the exact model and your location.

Google says its wired Nest models require the supplied chime connector, which enables constant power and protects the chime; its battery model does not require that connector. A battery-powered chime without doorbell wires will not work with the cited Nest doorbells. For the covered wired models, Google says a licensed electrician must install a new transformer in Europe and Australia. See Google’s Nest doorbell wiring and compatibility guidance before choosing parts or starting work.
Ring’s reviewed manual says the documented wired product needs a transformer and doorbell in the 8–24 VAC range to ring the chime. That manual is older, so do not apply its specification to every current Ring model; check the selected model’s current instructions.

Plan for Wi-Fi, climate and notifications
Both power types need a suitable network for connected video and app setup. Google requires the Home app and Wi-Fi for setup and recorded video, and specifies at least 2 Mbps upload speed for each Nest camera or doorbell. That is Google’s stated minimum for its devices, not a universal requirement for all brands. A weak Wi-Fi connection can cause connection problems or delayed video. Review Google’s installation and Wi-Fi requirements for the relevant Nest model.
Cold can also affect charging. Google says the Nest Doorbell (battery) cannot be charged below 0°C (32°F). If your installation location experiences temperatures below that threshold, account for the model’s charging guidance when deciding whether battery power suits your home.

For a wire-free Nest battery installation, Google says the home’s chime cannot be used. Its installation guidance suggests a compatible smart speaker or display for visitor announcements. Confirm that your preferred alert method works for the exact device and setup.
Install safely
For a wired installation, Google instructs users to switch off doorbell power at the breaker or fuse box and test that the correct circuit is off before disconnecting existing hardware. Do not work on live wiring. If you cannot identify the circuit, are unsure about the wiring, or may need transformer work, consult a qualified installer; local rules and the manufacturer’s instructions apply.

- Wiring: Does the selected model accept your transformer’s voltage and power, not merely a voltage that appears close?
- Chime: Is your indoor chime compatible, and does installation require a connector or a separate notification device?
- Placement: Is the existing wired location suitable, or do you need the flexibility of a battery model?
- Charging and climate: Are you willing and able to recharge the battery under the model’s temperature guidance?
- Network: Is Wi-Fi reliable at the door, and does your upload connection meet the manufacturer’s stated requirements?
- Installation: Can you safely complete the work, or should a qualified installer check the wiring or transformer?
There is no universal winner. The right choice follows from the exact model’s wiring and chime compatibility, the location, your tolerance for charging, local conditions and the network available at the door.
