Battery life and weight vary by model, so neither connection type is automatically lighter or longer-lasting. Compare the specific mouse, connection mode, test method, and battery settings—not just the wired or wireless label.
How wired, 2.4 GHz, and Bluetooth connections differ
“Wireless” covers distinct connection methods. A wired mouse sends data over its USB cable. A 2.4 GHz gaming mouse uses a dedicated USB receiver, usually supplied with the mouse. Bluetooth connects through a computer’s Bluetooth radio instead of that receiver. Those modes should not be treated as interchangeable in a latency comparison.
RTINGS says many gaming mice using proprietary USB receivers now match or even surpass wired models in latency performance. That is a broad observation from its testing guidance, not a promise about every product, game, computer, or latency metric. The same RTINGS guidance characterizes Bluetooth as having the highest latency among the connection types it compares and does not recommend it for gaming. RTINGS’ click-latency testing notes
What latency comparisons actually tell you
Latency numbers are meaningful only when the measured interval and test procedure are clear. Click latency concerns how quickly a click reaches the host; sensor or motion latency concerns pointer movement. Results for one are not a substitute for the other, and polling rate alone does not establish a mouse’s measured latency.

RTINGS’ test page labels click latency below 10 ms “Good value” and above 15 ms “Noticeable difference.” These are its testing-page guidance thresholds, not a guarantee that every player will perceive a difference in every game or system. Its dedicated click-latency procedure is also distinct from a manufacturer’s stated measurement interval.
For example, Razer defines its latency interval as the time from switch actuation until the signal reaches the host device’s USB port. That is Razer’s measurement definition; it should not be assumed to match another reviewer’s method without checking the test details. Razer also discusses polling rates up to 8,000 Hz for supported products, a manufacturer capability claim rather than proof that every user will perceive a corresponding improvement. Battery life depends on the model and settings
A cable avoids charging or replacing a mouse battery, but wireless runtime cannot be summarized with one category-wide figure. It varies with the model and its operating conditions. When comparing published runtime, check the manufacturer’s stated polling rate, lighting, and other test settings; distinguish a manufacturer specification from a reviewer’s test.
Logitech’s FY18 sustainability report offers a historical, model-specific comparison: it reported 30 hours for the G900 and 250 hours for G603/G304 products using the HERO sensor system. Logitech described the figures as “Run to Die (RTD), playing hours,” with an adjustment to compare an alkaline primary battery with a rechargeable lithium-polymer battery. The models and battery types differ, and the figures are historical—not a current estimate for wireless gaming mice generally. Logitech FY18 sustainability report, “Wireless Gaming Mice”

Weight, shape, and comfort are model-level choices
There is not enough evidence here to claim that wired mice are universally lighter than wireless mice, or vice versa. Weight depends on the individual design. For a fair product comparison, use the same convention for both: note whether the listed weight includes a cable, receiver, or removable weights.
Weight is only one part of fit. RTINGS’ wireless-mouse recommendations identify low weight as a performance consideration while also advising buyers to evaluate shape and comfort. A lighter mouse is not automatically a better choice for every hand size or grip style. RTINGS’ wireless gaming mouse recommendations

A practical way to compare two gaming mice
- Match the connection mode. Identify whether the wireless result uses the dedicated 2.4 GHz receiver or Bluetooth; do not compare one mode as if it represented the other.
- Match the latency metric. Separate click latency from sensor or motion latency, and check the stated test procedure before comparing figures.
- Record polling rate and test context. Polling rate is useful context, but it is not a replacement for a measured latency result. Note the method and the system or settings where available.
- Compare runtime on equivalent terms. Record the manufacturer’s battery settings, such as polling rate and lighting, or clearly label a runtime as a reviewer test.
- Compare weight consistently, then assess fit. Check whether cables, receivers, and removable weights are included, and consider shape and comfort alongside the number.
What the available study information establishes
A CDC-hosted study file is titled The effects of mouse weight and connection type on performance, muscle activity, and preferences among professional gamers. Its description says the researchers used a Logitech G Pro Wireless so weight and connection type could be varied while other mouse characteristics were held constant. The available study description does not give the results, so it cannot support a claim here that weight or connection type did—or did not—affect performance, muscle activity, or preference.
