Down is light and packable for cold, dry weather; synthetic or hybrid insulation can be more practical when dampness or sweat is likely. For rain or wet snow, check the finished jacket’s waterproof construction and sealed seams: a water-repellent finish by itself is not waterproof protection.
Are winter jackets temperature rated?
Usually, no. Unlike sleeping bags, insulated jackets generally do not have standardized temperature ratings that let you compare warmth across brands. A manufacturer may publish its own warmth scale, but that scale applies to its products rather than serving as a universal temperature promise.
For example, Canada Goose uses a five-point Thermal Experience Index for its own products. Treat it as that brand’s framework, not a cross-brand comparison. REI notes that how cold you feel, your activity, wetness, and the layers you wear all affect what jacket will work for you. REI’s insulated-jacket guide explains those selection factors.
What does fill power mean?
Fill power measures the loft of down: the volume, in cubic inches, occupied by one ounce. If one ounce occupies 650 cubic inches, it is 650-fill-power down. Patagonia’s fill-power guide says ratings typically range from 300 to 900.

Fill power is not the same as fill weight. Fill power describes the down’s loft per ounce; fill weight is how much insulation the garment contains. The first helps indicate down’s efficiency and compressibility, while the second tells you how much down is present.
Does higher fill power mean a warmer jacket?
Not necessarily. Higher-fill-power down can provide a better warmth-to-weight ratio and compress more, but it does not by itself establish how warm the complete jacket will be. Total warmth also depends on the amount and distribution of insulation, the jacket’s materials and construction, its fit, your activity, and the layers you wear.

Compare jackets by their intended conditions, insulation amount and type, fit for layering, weight, packability, and shell protection—not by fill power alone. Should I choose down, synthetic, or hybrid insulation?
Choose based on the balance of warmth, weight, packability, and likely exposure to moisture. REI’s guide to insulated jackets describes the common trade-offs:

Is water-repellent the same as waterproof?
No. Durable water repellent (DWR) is a finish on the outer fabric that encourages water to bead and roll off. It can wear away, and the face fabric may become saturated and feel cold or clammy even when a waterproof membrane underneath is not leaking. GORE-TEX explains how DWR works and wears.
Waterproof protection depends on the finished garment, not just a membrane name or a fabric specification. Check the maker’s claim for the jacket as a complete garment and whether its seams are sealed. GORE-TEX says its waterproof apparel uses seam tape and notes that components such as zippers and thread, construction, and rain assessment also matter. A fabric’s hydrostatic-pressure result alone cannot establish how the entire jacket will perform in rain or how durable its protection will be. See GORE-TEX’s explanation of waterproofness.

What should I wear over a down jacket in rain?
If your down jacket is not itself weatherproof, wear a waterproof breathable shell over it in rain or wet snow. The shell helps protect the down layer from getting wet; choose one with construction intended for rain rather than relying only on a water-repellent finish. REI recommends an outer rain layer over a puffy when rain is possible.

- Conditions: Is your typical cold weather dry, damp, rainy, or snowy?
- Activity: Will you be mostly standing still, walking, or generating enough heat to sweat?
- Insulation: Compare down, synthetic, or hybrid construction and, for down, consider both fill power and fill weight.
- Fit and layers: Make sure the jacket leaves room for the layers you expect to wear.
- Weather protection: Check whether the finished jacket is waterproof, whether seams are sealed, and what the maker says about its shell construction.
- Practical features: Consider weight, packability, hood coverage, and ventilation for your use.
