Released through Windows XP Service Pack 2, it improved handwriting input, correction and in-place text entry while retaining compatibility with ordinary Windows XP applications. It is now discontinued: Microsoft ended extended support on April 8, 2014, so its present-day value is mainly in restoring original hardware, preserving software or exploring computing history.
What Windows XP Tablet PC Edition 2005 was
Microsoft announced the edition on August 25, 2004. It succeeded the original Windows XP Tablet PC Edition and was delivered as part of Windows XP Service Pack 2. Microsoft described it as an updated version of the original Tablet PC Edition, keeping the familiar Windows XP environment while adding pen input, digital ink and handwriting recognition. What changed in the 2005 edition
The upgrade concentrated on making pen input easier to use in everyday Windows tasks rather than introducing a new class of applications.
Input Panel and handwriting recognition
The Tablet PC Input Panel could appear directly below a text field after the user tapped its input-panel button. Recognition happened in real time, with a preview before insertion. If the system misread a word, letter or number, users could correct it and select alternatives rather than accept the result as-is.

Recognition tuned to the task
Applications could indicate the kind of input they expected. For example, a field intended for a numeric postal code could constrain recognition, helping reduce confusion between similar-looking characters. This contextual support depended on application behavior; it was not a universal guarantee that every form would recognize handwriting accurately.
Ink in familiar Office applications
Microsoft highlighted ink and annotation workflows in Word 2003, Excel 2003, PowerPoint 2003, Outlook 2003 and OneNote 2003. These features made the Tablet PC most compelling for taking notes, marking up documents, writing email and entering information into forms while mobile. The exact feature experience depended on the Office application and version in use.

Developer and wireless support
Tablet PC SDK 1.7 added context-sensitive support and ink support for web-based applications. Windows XP SP2 also brought updated Bluetooth support for peripherals including keyboards, mice, printers, phones and PDAs. These were platform capabilities, not a promise that every device or application would work without appropriate software or drivers.
Can regular Windows XP programs run on it?
Yes. Microsoft said Windows applications written for a comparable Windows XP desktop or laptop could run on a Tablet PC without modification. Ordinary XP programs remained available; software designed specifically for pen use could additionally use Tablet PC APIs and controls. The practical distinction was that conventional programs could run, while pen-aware software could make better use of ink and handwriting features.

Is it useful for restoring an old Tablet PC?
It can be useful when the goal is to restore an original Tablet PC, run legacy software, preserve a period-correct setup or experiment with the hardware. It is not a sensible choice for a normally connected modern computer: Microsoft support has ended, and the cited historical documentation does not establish a current driver matrix or supported modern deployment path.

- Digitizer: check pen accuracy and whether pressure sensitivity matters for the software you intend to use.
- Recognition needs: consider the handwriting-recognition language available and whether its correction workflow suits your use.
- Condition: inspect battery health, display readability, weight, and hinge or convertible durability.
- Recovery materials: confirm that suitable vendor drivers and authentic recovery media are available for the exact device.
- Software requirement: establish whether your intended program actually needs Windows XP compatibility.

The dates are from Microsoft’s Windows XP lifecycle record. With support ended, do not treat the operating system as secure for everyday internet use or assume that present-day hardware has supported XP drivers.
Verdict
Windows XP Tablet PC Edition 2005 was a focused, incremental improvement to XP for pen-based work. Its combination of handwriting recognition, correction, contextual input and Office ink features made familiar applications more practical on a Tablet PC, while ordinary XP software remained compatible. Today, its strongest case is historical or restorative use on original hardware—not a supported, secure platform for general computing.
