If Windows keeps losing date-and-time sync, first check Settings > Time & language > Date & time and make sure Set time automatically is on. A wrong local hour may instead be a time-zone problem: Windows has a separate Set time zone automatically control. If those settings are correct, investigate the Windows Time service, access to its network time source, and—on a work or school PC—management policy before suspecting a hardware fault.
First identify what is actually wrong
Notice whether the clock is off by minutes, off by a consistent number of hours, or corrects itself and later changes. These patterns help choose what to check next, but none alone proves a cause.
- Wrong minutes or gradual drift: check automatic date-and-time setting and whether Windows can synchronize with its configured time source.
- Wrong local hour by a consistent offset: check the selected time zone. A time-zone error is not necessarily a failed clock synchronization.
- Clock resets after shutdown or loss of power: hardware-clock accuracy may warrant investigation, though this symptom alone does not establish that a particular component has failed.
Check Windows date, time, and time-zone settings
Microsoft places the relevant controls in Settings > Time & language > Date & time on Windows 10 and Windows 11. Microsoft’s Windows date, time, and time-zone guidance describes the automatic and manual controls.
- Open Settings > Time & language > Date & time.
- Check that Set time automatically is on if you want Windows to set the clock automatically.
- Check the displayed Time zone separately. If you want Windows to select it, check Set time zone automatically; otherwise, select the correct zone manually.
- If the page provides Sync now, use it and note whether the clock corrects or Windows reports an error.
Automatic time-zone selection can depend on device location settings. If only the local offset is wrong, investigate the time zone rather than treating it as proof that time synchronization failed.

If synchronization fails, check the service and network path
Windows Time, also called W32Time, obtains time samples from configured sources and adjusts the system clock. Microsoft says a non-domain computer is configured by default to obtain time from time.windows.com; domain-joined computers generally follow their domain time hierarchy. The configured source can differ if settings or policy have changed. Microsoft’s explanation of how Windows Time works describes the hierarchy and factors that affect synchronization.
Windows uses Network Time Protocol (NTP) communication over UDP port 123. A restrictive firewall, network rule, VPN policy, or unavailable configured time source can therefore prevent a sync. Microsoft documents the protocol and Windows Time tools in its Windows Time Service tools and settings reference.

- On a personal PC, confirm that internet access works and consider whether a firewall, VPN, or network policy could block time traffic.
- If the clock changes and then drifts again, note how long it takes and whether the failure occurs on one network or across networks. That information can help distinguish a source or network issue from a setting issue.
- On a work- or school-managed PC, ask IT to check the time source and policy. Managed computers may be configured centrally, so changing their source yourself can conflict with those settings.
Microsoft’s w32tm utility can diagnose and configure Windows Time. Local use requires administrator privileges. Start with the Settings controls and the observed error; avoid advanced service re-registration or registry edits unless a documented diagnosis calls for them.

If the clock reverts, match the symptom before using advanced fixes
Microsoft documents a specific case in which a computer can revert to an earlier date and time because it uses stale Secure Time Seeding information. This is one documented scenario, not a general explanation for every clock that changes unexpectedly. Its clock-reversion troubleshooting guidance includes reconnecting the computer to the internet and more advanced W32Time remediation. Follow only steps applicable to the documented scenario; Microsoft warns that incorrect registry edits can cause serious problems.

When to consider a hardware-clock issue
Microsoft lists hardware-clock accuracy among the factors that can affect synchronization. If the date or time is lost specifically while the computer is off or disconnected from power, hardware inspection may be appropriate. That observation does not by itself prove that a coin-cell battery is depleted. The part, replacement procedure, and serviceability depend on the computer model, so confirm the diagnosis before replacing hardware.

Use the failure pattern to choose the next check
