The fix depends on when Windows loses time. If the clock is wrong after shutdown or unplugging, test the BIOS/UEFI clock and the motherboard’s RTC/CMOS battery. If it drifts while Windows is running, investigate Windows Time (W32Time), NTP access, network policy, virtualization, or firmware. An exact one-hour error usually indicates a time-zone or daylight-saving setting.
First, identify when the clock loses time
| What you see | Most likely direction |
|---|---|
| Exactly one or more hours wrong | Time-zone or daylight-saving configuration |
| Seconds or minutes disappear while the PC is powered on | Windows synchronization, NTP/network access, firmware, virtualization, or system instability |
| Time is correct until shutdown, unplugging, or the next boot | RTC/CMOS battery, motherboard clock, or firmware |
| Time changes after booting Linux | Local-time versus UTC handling in a dual-boot setup |
| Time is wrong after sleep or hibernation | Resume, firmware, power-management, virtualization, or resynchronization behavior |
w32tm /resync says no time data is available |
DNS, firewall, VPN, NTP server, or network-path failure |
| A business PC repeatedly changes back | Domain hierarchy or Group Policy overriding local settings |
Compare the taskbar clock with a trusted phone, another computer, a reliable online clock, and (when relevant) the BIOS/UEFI clock. A lock-screen display can briefly appear about 30 seconds behind during a minute change; that documented display delay is not the same as losing minutes over several hours (Microsoft Support).
Correct Windows 10 or Windows 11 date and time settings
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Time & language > Date & time.
- Turn on Set time automatically.
- Choose the correct Time zone.
- Enable Set time zone automatically only if location-based detection is suitable.
- Where applicable, enable Adjust for daylight saving time automatically.
- Select Sync now.
These controls are documented for both Windows 10 and Windows 11 (Microsoft Support). Manually setting the clock can confirm the symptom, but it will not repair a failed synchronization service or a hardware clock that loses time.
Check Windows Time with the administrator command prompt
Open Command Prompt as administrator. W32Time is Windows’ built-in time service, and w32tm is Microsoft’s preferred diagnostic tool (Microsoft Learn).

sc query w32time
/statusshows synchronization state, last successful synchronization, stratum, and reference information./sourceidentifies the current time source./configurationreveals manual peers, domain-hierarchy settings, and other policy.sc query w32timeshows whether the service is running.
If the source is Local CMOS Clock, Windows may not have reached an NTP source; that result alone does not prove the CMOS battery is defective. An old or missing last-sync time indicates that synchronization has not recently succeeded.
Force a synchronization and read the error
w32tm /resync
A successful request should report that resynchronization was sent. If Windows says the computer did not resynchronize because no time data was available, investigate the configured source and network path rather than immediately editing the registry (Microsoft troubleshooting guidance).
You can restart the service once and retry:
net stop w32time
net start w32time
w32tm /resync
Record the exact error if it still fails. Repeating the same command will not bypass a blocked or unavailable source.
If Windows Time does not start automatically on a workgroup PC
On standalone computers, W32Time may intentionally use trigger-start behavior. The service can show Manual and Stopped while the scheduled Synchronize Time task starts it when needed. Check the triggers with:

sc qtriggerinfo w32time
Microsoft documents these workgroup-specific alternatives for a service that does not start reliably (Microsoft Learn, updated February 12, 2026):
sc triggerinfo w32time delete
or:
sc triggerinfo w32time start/networkon stop/networkoff
Another option is setting Windows Time to Automatic (Delayed Start) in the Services console. Microsoft notes that the scheduled synchronization task may also need to be disabled to avoid competing startup behavior. These changes alter Windows’ service design, so do not apply them as a universal first step.
Check the network, firewall, VPN, and NTP access
Windows Time uses NTP over UDP port 123 (Microsoft Learn). Normal web browsing uses HTTPS and does not prove that NTP is permitted.
- Temporarily disconnect the VPN and test again.
- Try another network, such as a phone hotspot.
- Confirm ordinary internet access and DNS are working.
- Check security software and firewalls for outbound UDP 123 restrictions.
- Verify that the configured time-server name resolves.
Change one variable at a time so you can identify whether the network, source, or service is responsible.

Change the time source only after diagnosing the default
For a non-domain PC, this is an example of configuring a manual peer:
w32tm /config /manualpeerlist:"time.windows.com,0x8" /syncfromflags:manual /update
net stop w32time
net start w32time
w32tm /resync
The server may be unreachable on a particular network, and a single peer is a single point of failure. Microsoft recommends multiple peers in relevant multi-server configurations. Keep the default Windows configuration unless testing shows that the current source is unavailable.
Test the BIOS/UEFI clock before replacing a battery
- Correct the time in Windows.
- Restart and enter BIOS/UEFI immediately.
- Check the hardware clock.
- Shut down fully, disconnect AC power when practical, wait, then boot and check BIOS/UEFI again.
- Compare BIOS/UEFI and Windows time.
- If BIOS/UEFI is already wrong, suspect the RTC, CMOS/RTC battery, motherboard, firmware, or power circuitry.
- If BIOS/UEFI is correct but Windows is wrong, focus on W32Time, time-zone settings, policy, dual boot, or virtualization.
- If both are correct after boot but Windows drifts during use, a dead battery is less likely.
Battery replacement is common on older desktops, but laptops may use an integrated or inaccessible RTC battery. Follow the manufacturer’s service manual instead of a generic disassembly guide. Microsoft’s diagnostic distinction between powered-off loss and running drift is described in its Q&A guidance (Microsoft Q&A).
Domain-joined business computers
Active Directory members normally synchronize through the domain hierarchy (the NT5DS time-client type), not directly with a public internet server (Microsoft Learn). Do not point a managed computer at time.windows.com without IT approval. Use:

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Dual-boot and virtual-machine exceptions
Dual boot
Windows generally treats the hardware clock as local time, while many Linux installations use UTC. Switching systems can therefore create an exact time-zone-sized jump. That pattern differs from gradual loss of seconds or minutes.
Virtual machines
In Hyper-V, VMware, VirtualBox, Parallels, or another hypervisor, the host or integration tools may correct the guest clock. Check whether the host is accurate, guest time synchronization is enabled, and the error appears only after pause, suspend, migration, or resume. A VM problem cannot be diagnosed from Windows settings alone.
Use Event Viewer and advanced repair only when basic checks fail
Open Event Viewer > Applications and Services Logs > Microsoft > Windows > Time-Service > Operational. Reproduce the problem, note its exact time, and look for failed synchronization, unavailable sources, service start/stop events, repeated corrections, or policy changes.

If settings revert after an upgrade or W32Time registration is damaged, follow Microsoft’s documented recovery procedure (W32Time values reverted). Create a restore point or backup first. Registry edits and service re-registration can make Windows unstable if performed incorrectly; they are not routine fixes.
When the clock reverts to a previous date
A clock that jumps back to a specific earlier date is different from ordinary drift. Microsoft has documented a Windows Time/Secure Time Seeding issue with version- and update-dependent remediation (Microsoft Learn). Follow that article for the affected Windows build rather than assuming a battery replacement will help.
When to seek hardware repair
Arrange manufacturer or professional service when BIOS/UEFI time keeps changing after a cold shutdown, firmware settings are unstable, the RTC battery is inaccessible, or the problem persists after a clean Windows-side diagnosis. Avoid third-party clock utilities until Windows, domain, host, and hardware causes have been checked; an extra synchronization service can conflict with existing time management.
Quick Recap
Quick checklist
- Check the time zone and daylight-saving setting.
- Run
w32tm /query /sourceand check the last successful sync. - Run
w32tm /resyncand save any error. - Check W32Time status and trigger configuration.
- Test without a VPN or on another network; consider UDP 123.
- Compare Windows time with BIOS/UEFI after a cold shutdown.
- Account for domain policy, dual boot, or a virtual-machine host.
- Replace the RTC/CMOS battery only when the hardware-clock test supports it.
