Use Windows Sandbox to try a Windows app in a clean, disposable session; choose Hyper-V when you need a persistent Windows-hosted virtual machine and checkpoints; choose VirtualBox when cross-platform hosting or a wider choice of guest operating systems matters. They suit different testing workflows rather than forming a simple best-to-worst ranking.

Which one fits your test?

What you need Best starting point Why
Quickly try a Windows installer, utility, or application, then discard the environment Windows Sandbox It opens a clean, temporary Windows desktop and discards its state when closed. It uses the host’s Windows build and permits only one running instance. Microsoft’s Windows Sandbox overview and FAQ describe these limits.
Keep a configured VM between sessions and return to saved states while testing Hyper-V Hyper-V VMs persist unless reverted, and checkpoints can return a VM to an earlier point. Checkpoints are recovery points, not independent backups. Microsoft’s checkpoint guidance explains the distinction.
Use a cross-platform VM manager or test different guest operating systems Oracle VirtualBox Oracle describes VirtualBox as a cross-platform application for running guest operating systems in VMs, with snapshots for reverting to saved states. Confirm support for your exact host and guest in the current VirtualBox manual.

When is Windows Sandbox the right choice?

Choose it for a short-lived Windows test

Sandbox is designed for a quick test that does not need to survive closing the window. You can install or open an app, inspect its behavior, and close the sandbox to discard its state. A restart within the same session does not have the same effect as closing the sandbox: closing it removes the session’s state.

It is not a way to choose an older Windows release or a different guest operating system. Sandbox uses the host’s Windows build, and Microsoft’s FAQ says only one instance can run at a time.

Check Windows edition and configure exposure

Microsoft lists Windows Pro, Enterprise, Pro Education/SE, and Education as editions that support Windows Sandbox. Its default configuration includes networking and clipboard sharing. For a suspicious application, do not assume that a fresh desktop is automatically isolated from every useful host or network resource.

Networking is enabled by default. Microsoft warns that network access can expose an untrusted app to the internal network, while mapped folders can expose host files. For offline inspection, disable networking where possible and map only the folder you need, preferably read-only. Microsoft’s configuration guidance covers networking and folder mapping.

When is Hyper-V a better fit?

Use it for a VM you will keep managing

Unlike a disposable Sandbox session, a Hyper-V virtual machine can retain its installed software and configuration across sessions. Checkpoints let you return to an earlier VM state, which is useful when testing a change and then starting again from a known point.

Checkpoint type affects consistency. A standard checkpoint captures the VM’s memory state; a production checkpoint uses VSS for Windows guests or a Linux file-system freeze to create a data-consistent checkpoint. Neither type replaces a separate backup. Microsoft explicitly cautions that a standard checkpoint is not a full backup in its Hyper-V checkpoint documentation.

Verify client edition and hardware first

On Windows client, Microsoft’s requirements page lists Windows 10 or Windows 11 Pro or Enterprise, a 64-bit CPU with Second Level Address Translation (SLAT), VM Monitor Mode extensions, virtualization enabled in BIOS/UEFI, and sufficient memory. Microsoft advises planning for at least 4 GB of RAM; that is a minimum planning figure, not a guarantee that a particular host and guest workload will run well. Run Systeminfo.exe and check its Hyper-V requirements section before setting up a VM. See Microsoft’s Hyper-V requirements.

When should you choose VirtualBox?

Choose it when host or guest flexibility matters

VirtualBox is the natural candidate if you want a cross-platform VM manager or need to run a guest OS other than the host’s Windows build. Oracle’s manual describes VirtualBox 7.2 as cross-platform and documents snapshots that preserve VM state for later reversion.

“Cross-platform” does not mean every host-and-guest combination is supported. Support varies by host, guest, architecture, and release, so check Oracle’s manual for the exact combination you plan to use. Snapshots are convenient for test recovery, but should not be treated as an independent backup.

How do persistence, flexibility, and setup compare?

What to use for suspicious software

Windows Sandbox is convenient for a disposable Windows test, but its default networking and clipboard settings matter. For file inspection that does not require internet access, disable Sandbox networking and limit any mapped host folder to the specific files needed, with read-only access where practical. Do not expose a broad writable host folder to an untrusted app. If the test requires a persistent, carefully configured VM, Hyper-V or VirtualBox may suit the workflow better, but saved checkpoints and snapshots are not substitutes for independent backups.
