For a one-time session helping a relative who is at their Windows PC, use Quick Assist: they enter a code and approve screen sharing, and separately approve any request for full control. Use Remote Desktop when you need to sign in to a PC that has already been set up for remote access. Its host must run Windows Pro, have Remote Desktop enabled, and be reachable by PC name. The choice is mainly about whether you are helping someone through a session or accessing a prepared computer.

Quick Assist vs. Remote Desktop at a glance

Decision point Quick Assist Remote Desktop
Best for One-off help while the other person is present and can approve the session Signing in to and using a PC already configured for remote access
How access starts The helper shares a six-digit code; the recipient enters it and allows screen sharing The user connects to an enabled host by PC name and signs in
Host requirements Microsoft documents Quick Assist for Windows 10 and Windows 11; installation may be blocked by organization policy or unavailable on some older releases The remote host must run Windows Pro and have Remote Desktop enabled
Control and consent Screen sharing requires the recipient’s approval; taking full control requires a separate request and approval Provides access to the host desktop, apps, and files after sign-in; Microsoft’s setup guide does not describe a separate per-session approval prompt on the host
Client choices Use the Quick Assist app for the documented support flow; the browser app is for sessions with verified Microsoft support agents Microsoft documents clients for Windows, macOS, iOS, and Android

These differences follow Microsoft’s documented Quick Assist and Remote Desktop workflows. See Quick Assist setup and safety guidance and Remote Desktop setup requirements.

When Quick Assist is the better choice

Quick Assist is designed for helping another person with a Windows PC remotely. It fits a family support call because your relative can see what is happening and decide whether to let you view the screen or operate the computer.

Start a session with your relative’s approval

  1. The helper opens Quick Assist and selects Help someone.
  2. Share the six-digit security code with the relative through a channel you trust.
  3. Your relative enters the code and allows screen sharing when prompted.
  4. If you need to operate the PC, request full control. The relative must approve that request separately and can refuse it.

Quick Assist also offers chat, a laser pointer, and annotations, which can be useful when explaining a setting without taking control.

Check whether the app is available

Microsoft’s Quick Assist guidance applies to Windows 10 and Windows 11, but installation is not universal. A work- or school-managed device may block the app through organizational policy, and the Store app may not install on some older Windows releases. If the installation or launch path differs, check Microsoft’s current Quick Assist guidance rather than assuming every Windows PC has the same app availability.

When Remote Desktop makes more sense

Remote Desktop is the better fit when you want to connect to a computer prepared for remote use—for example, a PC you regularly access while away. It gives the signed-in user access to the remote PC’s desktop, apps, and files. Unlike Quick Assist’s code-and-approval flow, setup begins with enabling the host and connecting with its PC name and account credentials.

Check the host before setting it up

  • Windows edition: The remote PC must run Windows Pro. A Windows Home PC cannot serve as the Remote Desktop host under the setup described by Microsoft.
  • Remote access: Remote Desktop must be enabled in Settings on that PC before you connect.
  • Connection details: Note the PC name and use an account authorized to sign in.
  • Client device: The connecting client can be Windows, macOS, iOS, or Android, according to Microsoft’s guide.

Remote Desktop’s host requirement is often the deciding factor: having a supported client device does not make a Windows Home computer an eligible host. Also, enabling Remote Desktop is not by itself a guarantee that an internet-facing setup is safe; protect the host and its sign-in credentials.

Which one should you use for your family?

  • Your parent is at the computer and can approve a help session: Choose Quick Assist. It is built around an assisted session and explicit recipient approval.
  • You want to use a prepared family PC regularly from elsewhere: Choose Remote Desktop if the host runs Windows Pro and has been configured.
  • The PC runs Windows Home: Quick Assist is the more suitable of these two for a one-off support session; Windows Home does not meet the documented Remote Desktop host requirement.
  • The person cannot participate in approving access: Quick Assist’s documented workflow depends on the recipient entering the code and allowing access. Remote Desktop requires prior host configuration and sign-in rather than that support-session approval flow.

Safety: only connect when the support request is expected

Quick Assist can expose what is on the screen, and full control lets the helper operate the PC if the recipient approves. Microsoft advises using it only with people the recipient trusts. For family help, have your relative initiate the session with a known family member, and reject unexpected requests to connect. Microsoft specifically warns against allowing access in response to unsolicited technical-support contact; its browser-based Quick Assist option is for interactions with verified Microsoft support agents, not ordinary family sessions.

Remote Desktop is access to a configured computer after sign-in, so keep the host and account credentials secure. Do not treat the fact that Remote Desktop is enabled as proof that a PC is safe to expose to the internet.

Windows version note

Microsoft’s Remote Desktop guide covers Windows 10 and Windows 11 feature setup, but it also states that Windows 10 reached end of support on October 14, 2025. That date concerns Windows 10 support status; it does not erase the distinction between Quick Assist’s support-session workflow and Remote Desktop’s Windows Pro host requirement.
