A useful PC maintenance session is a short review of updates, security, storage, startup apps, and backups—not a guaranteed fix for every slowdown. The 30-minute plan below is a manageable way to check those areas; its time slots are estimates for active review, not a measured or Microsoft-validated schedule. Downloads, scans, restarts, and backup syncing can take longer or continue after you finish.

What should I do to maintain my PC?

Work through these five checks in order. The suggested minutes are a practical way to bound your attention, not a promise that each task will finish in that time.

  1. Check Windows Update (about 5 minutes of active review). Open Settings > Windows Update and check for updates. Install relevant available updates when appropriate, and allow time for downloads, installation, or a restart. Microsoft says updates often include fixes and performance improvements, and recommends keeping Windows updated to address security risks. Optional driver updates may appear; review them rather than installing every optional driver automatically. See Microsoft’s Windows Update FAQ.
  2. Start a Windows Security quick scan (about 5 minutes to start and review). Open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Quick scan. Malware can use CPU and disk resources, but a quick scan is not a guarantee that every threat will be detected or that the scan will finish within this time slot. Microsoft includes malware checks among its Windows performance recommendations.
  3. Review storage (about 8 minutes). Go to Settings > System > Storage. Check Storage Sense or Cleanup recommendations, and select only files you recognize and are comfortable removing. Categories can include temporary files, large or unused files, cloud-synced files, and unused apps. Disk Cleanup is another built-in option for temporary and system files. Microsoft explains these choices in its guide to freeing up drive space.
  4. Review startup and unused apps (about 7 minutes). Open Task Manager and select Startup apps. Disable only entries you recognize and do not need to launch automatically. Disabling an item at startup does not uninstall the app. Remove an application only if you know what it is and no longer need it. Startup apps can add background activity and slow boot time, according to Microsoft’s performance guidance.
  5. Check your backup state (about 5 minutes). Open Windows Backup and check whether the folders you care about are selected for backup. For a local copy, File History can use an external drive or network location. A cloud-synced folder may mirror deletions, so synchronization alone is not a substitute for considering how you would recover an accidentally deleted file.

How often should I clean up my Windows computer?

There is no single schedule that suits every PC, and this session is best treated as a recurring check-in rather than a required monthly repair ritual. Windows also schedules automatic maintenance. Microsoft Learn says, “The system chooses those times based on minimal impact to the user, PC performance, and energy efficiency,” describing Windows Automatic Management’s scheduling behavior in its Automatic maintenance (Task Scheduler) documentation. Your manual review can help you notice issues or confirm settings, but it does not replace or control all scheduled maintenance.

Windows has built-in tools for updates, security scans, storage cleanup, and startup management. Microsoft also identifies its PC Manager app as a tool for storage cleanup, startup management, and performance diagnosis. There is no need to install a third-party “PC cleaner” or make aggressive registry edits as part of this routine.

What can I safely delete from my PC?

Start with the categories shown in Storage settings or Cleanup recommendations, then decide item by item. Temporary files may be suitable to remove, but do not assume that every file Windows lists—or every file in Downloads—is disposable. Check names, locations, and whether a cloud-synced item is also used on another device before confirming deletion. Disk Cleanup provides another built-in route for temporary and system files; Microsoft’s storage guide describes the available cleanup options.

How do I make my Windows PC run better?

Use the routine to check common contributors, not to assume one cleanup action will solve a slowdown. Microsoft lists several possible causes, including limited storage, too many startup apps, outdated software, malware, and hardware that no longer meets current needs. The right next step depends on what you find: free space if storage is constrained, review background startup activity if boot is slow, or update Windows when updates are available. Microsoft cautions that “Older PCs with outdated hardware may not see significant improvements from these steps” in its performance guidance.

Which backup option fits your needs?

Choose based on where you want a recoverable copy and what you need to restore. Windows Backup is focused on consumer devices using a personal Microsoft account and syncs selected folders to OneDrive. Microsoft states that a free Microsoft account includes 5 GB of OneDrive storage; the available space can limit how much fits. File History can save to an external drive or a network location.

File History External drive or network location. A local or network destination for file copies and recovery.

Microsoft describes Windows Backup in its Windows Backup guide and discusses File History destinations in its backup, restore, and recovery overview. If you prefer local backup, an external drive is one possible destination, not a requirement for the other maintenance checks.

Important Windows 10 support status

Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft says it no longer provides free software updates from Windows Update, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10 after that date. Running this checklist does not restore support or provide equivalent protection. See Microsoft’s Windows Update FAQ for its support-status information. These menu paths generally apply to Windows 10 and Windows 11, though labels may vary by version; work- or school-managed devices may also be governed by organizational policies.
