Windows NT Workstation 5.0 became Windows 2000 Professional, while Windows NT Server 5.0 became Windows 2000 Server. Microsoft announced the finished products for manufacturing in December 1999 and planned worldwide availability for February 17, 2000.
What did Windows NT 5.0 become?
Microsoft announced the name change on October 27, 1998: the product line formerly called Windows NT 5.0 would be released as Windows 2000. The announcement mapped the development names to the new product names:
- Windows NT Workstation 5.0 became Windows 2000 Professional.
- Windows NT Server 5.0 became Windows 2000 Server.
Microsoft also announced Windows 2000 Advanced Server as part of the product lineup. The old “NT 5.0” label therefore refers to the development-era name, while Windows 2000 is the name used for the released products. Microsoft’s October 27, 1998 announcement documents the change.
How did the Windows 2000 editions differ?
Microsoft’s 1998 announcement described the editions for different organizational roles. These are period product-positioning statements, not a modern compatibility guide.
| Edition | Microsoft’s stated role in 1998 | SMP positioning stated for new systems |
|---|---|---|
| Windows 2000 Professional | Business desktop operating system | Up to two-way SMP |
| Windows 2000 Server | Small- to medium-enterprise applications, web servers, workgroups, and branch offices | Up to two-way SMP |
| Windows 2000 Advanced Server | Departmental and application servers, database-intensive workloads, clustering, and load balancing | Up to four-way SMP |
SMP means symmetric multiprocessing: a system can use multiple processors. The two-way and four-way figures above reproduce Microsoft’s stated support positioning for new systems in its 1998 announcement; they should not be treated as a complete hardware-compatibility specification.
What was announced before release?
In September 1997, Microsoft announced distribution of a Windows NT 5.0 beta to more than 200,000 developers. That number was Microsoft’s announcement figure, not an independently audited count. The beta announcement highlighted planned storage features including disk quotas and the encrypted file system. Beta-era feature announcements describe what Microsoft was promoting during development; they are not, by themselves, an exhaustive specification of the final release. Microsoft’s beta announcement provides the contemporary context.

When did Windows 2000 reach manufacturing and availability?
On December 15, 1999, Microsoft announced release to manufacturing (RTM) for Windows 2000 Professional, Server, and Advanced Server. RTM meant the software had been sent into the manufacturing process; it was distinct from general availability. Microsoft’s announcement planned worldwide availability for February 17, 2000. That date is the announced plan recorded at the time. Microsoft’s RTM announcement states both milestones.

For historical references, “Windows NT 5.0” is useful for identifying the development period and beta material; “Windows 2000” is the released product name. Microsoft’s current general guidance says unsupported Windows versions do not receive software or security updates, but the consulted guidance does not provide a Windows 2000-specific lifecycle date. Microsoft’s support guidance explains the general meaning of unsupported status without establishing a Windows 2000 date.
