Windows 11 Notepad gained spellcheck and autocorrect through a staged rollout to Windows Insiders that Microsoft announced in March 2024. Spellcheck can underline misspellings and offer suggestions; autocorrect fixes common typing mistakes as you type. Microsoft’s announcement documents Insider rollout stages, not a date when the features became available to every Windows user.
What spellcheck and autocorrect do
Spellcheck marks misspelled words with an underline and offers suggested corrections. You can choose a suggestion, ignore a word for the current document, or add the word to the dictionary. Microsoft says spellcheck supports multiple languages.
Autocorrect works differently: it fixes common typing mistakes as you type. Microsoft described it as a separate addition to Notepad, not as another name for spellcheck.
When the features began rolling out

These were staged Insider releases. Microsoft’s announcement did not establish when spellcheck and autocorrect would reach all Windows users. The 41-year figure in the original framing is not verified by the cited feature announcement, which does not give Notepad’s original introduction date.

Why Notepad may underline words in one file but not another
Spellcheck is not necessarily enabled for every file type. Microsoft said it was on by default for some types and off by default for log files and other types commonly associated with coding. That helps avoid unwanted spelling marks in files where text may be code, identifiers, or logs.
You can adjust spellcheck in Notepad settings globally or for selected file types. For a temporary change, use the open file’s context menu. Microsoft’s announcement documents these spellcheck controls; it does not separately establish a distinct autocorrect toggle.

How to check whether your Notepad has it
- Open Notepad on your Windows 11 PC and check its version in the app’s About area.
- If your version includes the feature, open Notepad settings to review spellcheck preferences, including file-type settings.
- For the current document only, use its context menu to adjust spellcheck temporarily.
- Type a likely misspelling in a supported text file to see whether Notepad underlines it and offers suggestions; test autocorrect separately by typing a common mistake.
Availability and defaults can differ by rollout stage, file type, and language. If the controls or behavior described above are absent, the Microsoft post alone does not establish that the feature has reached that particular installation.
Spellcheck is not Notepad’s Rewrite feature
Microsoft separately announced a preview of AI Rewrite for Notepad on November 6, 2024. That is a different feature from spelling suggestions and autocorrect; Microsoft described the Rewrite preview as limited to specified regions and requiring a Microsoft account. Those conditions should not be treated as spellcheck requirements. Microsoft’s AI Rewrite announcement provides that separate feature’s scope.
