What changed: Remote Desktop became Windows App
Windows App is the successor name for Microsoft’s Remote Desktop client experience, not a new remote desktop protocol or a universal replacement for every Windows remote-access tool. Microsoft introduced the name with version 11.0.0 on September 19, 2024, alongside an updated interface and additional functions. The connection center organizes resources into Devices, Apps, and Favorites; the app also supports multiple Microsoft Entra accounts and actions such as restarting or restoring a Cloud PC. These capabilities can vary by platform and service. Microsoft’s migration guide and release notes describe the transition.
The older Microsoft Store Remote Desktop app for Windows reached end of support on May 27, 2025. Microsoft blocked its connections to Azure Virtual Desktop, Windows 365, and Microsoft Dev Box beginning September 30, 2025. Microsoft said that block did not affect its remote PC and Remote Desktop Services connections; that does not mean Windows App supports every such connection on Windows. Which app should you use?

Windows App’s overview lists Azure Virtual Desktop, Windows 365, and Microsoft Dev Box across Windows, macOS, iOS/iPadOS, Android/Chrome OS, browser, and Meta Quest. That broad availability does not mean every service works on every platform: check the platform-by-platform support matrix for your combination. Microsoft documentation establishes capabilities, not a guarantee of latency, reliability on a particular network, or which client will feel easier to use.

What features can matter when choosing?
Microsoft lists multiple-monitor support, custom and dynamic display resolutions and scaling, device redirection for items such as webcams, audio, storage, and printers, Microsoft Teams optimizations, and switching between multiple accounts. Availability depends on the platform and service, so confirm the requirements for your organization’s setup in Microsoft’s Windows App overview rather than assuming every feature is available in every connection.
For organization services, Windows App requires a work or school account provided by an administrator; a personal Microsoft account cannot be used to sign in. Supported remote-PC connections can be used without signing in. Ask your administrator which account and deployment method apply to your connection.

How to move from Remote Desktop to Windows App
On Windows
- Install Windows App using the distribution method approved by your organization, or the appropriate Microsoft-provided channel.
- Sign in with the work or school account your administrator provided for organization services, then connect to the resources your organization has made available.
- After confirming the new client works, uninstall the old Remote Desktop app. Microsoft says the two apps may coexist temporarily while users become familiar with Windows App.
Windows does not automatically upgrade the old client. If your organization installed or manages it, you may not have permission to remove it; an administrator may need to deploy Windows App and remove the older application. Follow the organization’s instructions. See Microsoft’s migration guide.
On macOS, iOS/iPadOS, or Android
Microsoft’s migration guide says the Remote Desktop app updates automatically to Windows App on these platforms. If it has not changed on your device, check your organization’s app-management instructions and the relevant app store before removing or reinstalling anything.

When you should pause and verify compatibility
- You need Remote Desktop Services from a Windows device: Windows App’s matrix lists this combination as unsupported. Ask the administrator responsible for the deployment which client is approved; do not infer support from the old app’s unaffected connections.
- You plan to use a browser: The browser option does not cover Remote Desktop Services or direct remote-PC connections in the current matrix.
- You depend on a peripheral, multiple displays, or Teams optimization: Confirm support for the exact client platform and service, because the feature list is not a guarantee across all combinations.
- Your Windows client is organization-managed: Your administrator may need to handle installation or removal, and may specify how you sign in or access resources.
