When Windows App will not connect to a remote PC, first identify where the failure occurs: signing in to Windows App, finding an assigned resource, reaching a directly configured PC, or signing in to Windows on the remote machine. Each points to a different fix. Check the account and resource assignment, the client app and internet connection, the remote PC and its permissions, network reachability, and only then the session’s display settings.
First identify which sign-in or connection step is failing
“Windows App sign-in problem” can describe several different checkpoints. Note what you can do and the exact error you see before changing settings.
- You cannot sign in to Windows App: the issue may involve the account or its authentication. Microsoft says, “Windows App uses your existing account; it doesn’t manage accounts.” For a password change or account problem, follow the process provided by your organization or account administrator. Microsoft’s Windows App troubleshooting guidance explains the distinction.
- You sign in but see “No resources available” or no desktops: this is not the same as a bad password. For organization-provided resources such as Azure Virtual Desktop, Windows 365, or Microsoft Dev Box, an administrator may need to assign or configure access for your account. Ask them to check the assignment.
- You connect to a named remote PC and reach its Windows sign-in screen, but are rejected: the account may not be permitted on that host. Microsoft’s Remote Desktop clients FAQ notes that the user may need to belong to the Remote Desktop Users group or an administrator group. This is a host-side permission issue, not something reinstalling Windows App grants.
- You cannot reach the PC or get to its sign-in screen: check that the host is on, configured for Remote Desktop, and reachable over the network before troubleshooting credentials.
Windows App instructions for an individual remote PC are not interchangeable with instructions for signing in to an assigned cloud or organization resource. If you use a work or school account, your organization may control both the account and which resources appear.
Check Windows App and the client’s internet connection
- Confirm the client device has internet access. Open a website or use Windows network diagnostics. In Windows 11, Microsoft points users to the Get Help network troubleshooter. For an Ethernet connection, check that the cable is firmly connected, try another port or cable if available, and compare with another device. See Microsoft’s Ethernet troubleshooting steps.
- Update Windows App. Confirm you are using a current version, then retry the connection.
- Try the connection in a web browser. Microsoft recommends a browser-based connection as a diagnostic fallback. If the browser works but the installed app does not, that narrows the problem toward the installed client or its configuration; it does not by itself identify the cause. The browser option and available resources depend on the service and account you use.
- For recurring or service-specific failures, involve the administrator. Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance directs Windows 365 and Dev Box users to service-specific inspection or repair actions, and Azure Virtual Desktop users to connection round-trip-time information. If performance remains poor or failures recur, ask the administrator to inspect the relevant service and account.
Network reset is a late step, not a first fix: Windows removes and reinstalls network adapters, and you may need to set up VPN clients or virtual switches again. A USB-to-Ethernet adapter can be a useful optional test if the client device has no Ethernet port, but compatibility varies by device and operating system. A wired test cannot fix an unassigned resource, rejected credentials, or host permissions.

Verify the remote PC can accept a connection
These checks apply to a direct connection to an individual PC. Organization-managed desktops may have different host and network arrangements, so ask the administrator to confirm their setup rather than assuming you can change it yourself.
Check the host edition and Remote Desktop setting
Microsoft’s public end-user setup page uses Windows Pro as the host requirement for its Windows 10 and Windows 11 examples. Its broader Remote Desktop documentation lists Pro, Enterprise, Education, and Windows Server editions as possible hosts; Windows Home editions cannot host incoming Remote Desktop connections. A client device can run Windows Home or another operating system. Check Microsoft’s instructions to enable Remote Desktop for the relevant host edition.

Make sure the host is ready and the user is allowed
- The remote PC must be powered on, connected to a network, and awake—not asleep or hibernating.
- Remote Desktop must be enabled on the host.
- The account used to connect must be permitted on that PC.
- The host firewall and network policy must allow the connection.
If an organization manages the host, firewall, or account, do not try to bypass its policy. Send the administrator the exact error and say whether a browser-based connection succeeds.
Check the PC name, address, and network path
If Windows App cannot find a PC by name, confirm the spelling and try its IP address, as Microsoft recommends in its Remote Desktop FAQ. Name lookup depends on DNS and may fail on some home networks. An IP address can help distinguish a name-resolution problem from a broader reachability problem, but it does not grant permission to connect.

When the host is outside your local network, you need a network path configured for remote access, such as a VPN or another method supplied by your administrator. Do not expose a Remote Desktop port to the public internet as a casual troubleshooting step.
Separate internet trouble from remote-host trouble
If ordinary websites also fail on the client, troubleshoot its internet connection first. If the internet works but the remote PC does not, check the host name or IP address, whether the PC is powered on and awake, Remote Desktop configuration, account permission, VPN or organization network access, and firewall policy.

If only an organization-provided desktop or app is missing or failing, ask the administrator to verify that your account is assigned and that the required network endpoints are reachable. Faster home Wi-Fi, a generic driver updater, or unrelated security software will not resolve a resource-assignment or host-permission problem.

For a remote session that looks wrong
Windows App has optional display settings for an individual remote-PC connection. Open the saved PC’s settings and review the display mode and other options available in your platform and app version; the exact controls can vary. Microsoft confirms these per-connection settings in its Windows App connection instructions. They are worth checking for a session that appears cropped, blank, or at an unexpected resolution, but no single display mode is established as a universal fix.

For a separate wireless monitor or dock
Miracast is a different feature: it projects a local device’s screen to a wireless display. It does not repair a Windows App remote-PC connection. For wireless display problems, follow Microsoft’s wireless display and dock guidance:
- Confirm both devices support Miracast and that Wi-Fi is enabled.
- On a target PC where required, install the Wireless Display app and enable discovery.
- Update relevant drivers and firmware, then restart the devices.
- If needed, remove the display and connect it again.
A Miracast adapter is relevant only when the display lacks Miracast support and you intend to project wirelessly; it is not a general remote-PC accessory.
What to send your administrator
For a managed account, desktop, firewall, or access error, provide the exact message rather than a paraphrase. Include the account type (work/school or personal), which resource or PC you tried, whether the installed app and browser behave differently, and whether ordinary internet access works. That helps distinguish an account assignment or policy issue from a client, network, or host problem.
