A Windows 98-style desktop in a browser is not necessarily Windows 98. Some sites recreate the look and familiar apps; other browser-based setups can run an emulated Windows 98 guest. Installing Windows 98 in DOSBox-X gives you more control over the virtual machine, but requires installation media and configuration. Which option fits depends on whether you want a quick retro experience or an actual operating-system installation.
What does “Windows 98 emulator online” actually mean?
The label covers different technologies. A browser page may simulate the Windows 98 desktop and selected applications, run DOS games in an emulator, or use a browser-based DOSBox-X backend capable of booting Windows 98 or ME. These are not interchangeable: a recreated desktop does not provide the compatibility of a Windows 98 installation.
- Desktop simulation: Recreates the interface and selected apps with web technologies; it does not boot Windows 98.
- Browser-based emulation: Runs an emulated machine in a browser. The js-dos documentation describes a DOSBox-X backend capable of running operating systems through Windows 98/ME.
- Installed guest: Installs Windows 98 on a virtual hard disk in DOSBox-X, using Windows installation media.
Which browser-based options are different?
Desktop98: a recreated desktop
Desktop98 describes its free browser experience as a simulator with a desktop, Start menu, taskbar and selected apps, including Winamp, Minesweeper, Solitaire and Paint. It says no download, installation or account is required. Its FAQ is explicit: “Desktop98 is a Windows 98 simulator rather than a full operating-system emulator.” The desktop and apps are recreated in HTML, CSS and JavaScript, without a virtual machine, BIOS or Windows 98 ISO. Its Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator simulators load 1998-era pages through the Internet Archive’s Wayback Machine. Treat that as a retro-web feature, not a general-purpose browser for today’s web. Desktop98 also says its DOS games run through js-dos; that does not mean the simulated desktop itself is Windows 98.

js-dos with a DOSBox-X backend: browser execution
The js-dos documentation says its DOSBox-X backend can run operating systems up to Windows 98/ME and can use js-dos features such as worker execution and networking. It notes that this backend may be slower than traditional DOSBox emulation and recommends virtual makevm drives for larger Windows distributions. The documentation also mentions prebuilt Windows 95/98 images. PCjs: browser demos with documented storage limits
PCjs describes a browser playground with a simulated command prompt and file system. Its documented browser demo cannot access local files and has no provision for saving work. That limitation applies to the demo described, not automatically to every browser emulator. Choose a desktop simulation for an immediate dose of Windows 98’s interface and bundled-style apps. Try a browser-based DOSBox-X setup if you specifically need to boot an operating system in the browser and have found an instance suited to your use. Choose an installed DOSBox-X guest when you need to configure the emulated machine and are prepared to install Windows.
There is no controlled head-to-head benchmark in the cited project documentation for speed, compatibility or saved work. In particular, js-dos’s note that its DOSBox-X backend may be slower than traditional DOSBox is not a comparison with locally installed virtual-machine software. Test the application, game and exact setup you intend to use.

How to install Windows 98 in DOSBox-X
DOSBox-X’s installation guide uses a virtual hard-disk image and a Windows 98 CD-ROM image. It describes booting from a bootable CD image or mounting the image and running SETUP from the installation files. The guide says obtaining the Windows image is outside its scope. - Prepare installation media and a virtual disk. You need a Windows 98 CD-ROM image and a virtual hard-disk image. The guide’s example creates an 8 GB disk with a FAT32 partition; 8 GB is its example, not a universal minimum. The guide warns that Windows 98’s generic IDE driver cannot handle volumes larger than 128 GB. Larger volumes may be possible with third-party drivers, which the guide does not cover.
- Mount the disk and CD image in DOSBox-X. Follow the guide’s configuration for attaching the virtual hard disk and CD-ROM image, then use either its bootable-CD route or its instructions for running SETUP from the mounted installation files.
- Use the recommended CPU core during setup. The guide recommends
core=normalfor installation; it says the dynamic x86 core should work for most uses after installation. Setup and startup may take considerable time. DOSBox-X’s turbo mode can speed them up depending on the host CPU, but makes mouse interaction difficult while active. - Consider copying setup files to the virtual disk. DOSBox-X recommends this to avoid later requests for the CD-ROM. For its Windows 98 SE example, the
WIN98directory is roughly 174 MB; omitting itsOLSandTOURsubdirectories saves roughly 54 MB, leaving about 120 MB to copy. These are figures for that installation flow, not general system requirements. - Complete Windows setup and configure devices as needed. Video and networking choices are optional configuration work; the details below matter if you need those features.
What hardware and networking can you configure?
Networking: choose between PCAP and SLIRP
DOSBox-X documents an emulated NE2000 network adapter with either the PCAP or SLIRP backend. Networking requires enabling and configuring that adapter; in Windows 98, the adapter’s IRQ should match the configured nicirq value. The guide’s example uses IRQ 10. DOSBox-X networking instructions

Networking is not required just to install the guest. Select a backend based on the host platform and the protocols the guest software needs; neither backend guarantees that a particular network application will work.
Video: supported emulation is not modern 3D acceleration
The guide’s default S3 Trio64 emulated adapter is supported by Windows 98 out of the box and offers defined resolutions and color depths. The standard Windows 98 driver does not provide the enhanced widescreen modes described in the guide; it outlines a separate VESA-driver route to address those restrictions. This is a graphics-compatibility setting, not a promise of modern 3D acceleration. DOSBox-X video instructions
What to verify before relying on a browser emulator
Browser access alone does not tell you whether an emulator can save a session, exchange files with your computer, or run a particular program. Check the exact service or hosted instance rather than assuming that one project’s limits apply to all the others.
